Genesis 24:10–24:26
כ"ד:י׳ וַיִּקַּ֣ח הָ֠עֶבֶד עֲשָׂרָ֨ה גְמַלִּ֜ים מִגְּמַלֵּ֤י אֲדֹנָיו֙ וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ וְכָל־ט֥וּב אֲדֹנָ֖יו בְּיָד֑וֹ וַיָּ֗קָם וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ אֶל־אֲרַ֥ם נַֽהֲרַ֖יִם אֶל־עִ֥יר נָחֽוֹר׃
24:10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and set out, taking with him all the bounty of his master; and he made his way to Aram-naharaim, to the city of Nahor.
24:10 And the servant took ten camels, of the camels of his master, and departed; having all goodly things of his master’s in his hand; and he arose, and went to Aram-naharaim, unto the city of Nahor.
כ"ד:י׳ וּדְבַר עַבְדָא עַשְׂרָא גַמְלִין מִגַּמְלֵי רִבּוֹנֵה וַאֲזַל וְכָל שְׁפַר רִבּוֹנֵיהּ בִּידֵיהּ וְקָם וַאֲזַל לַאֲרָם דִּי עַל פְּרַת לְקַרְתָּא דְנָחוֹר:
כ"ד:י"א וַיַּבְרֵ֧ךְ הַגְּמַלִּ֛ים מִח֥וּץ לָעִ֖יר אֶל־בְּאֵ֣ר הַמָּ֑יִם לְעֵ֣ת עֶ֔רֶב לְעֵ֖ת צֵ֥את הַשֹּׁאֲבֹֽת׃
24:11 He made the camels kneel down by the well outside the city, at evening time, the time when women come out to draw water.
24:11 And he made the camels to kneel down without the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time that women go out to draw water.
כ"ד:י"א וְאַשְׁרֵי גַמְלַיָּא מִבָּרָא לְקַרְתָּא לִבְאֵרָא דְמַיָּא לְעִדַּן רַמְשָׁא לְעִדַּן דְּנַפְקַן מַלְיָתָא:
כ"ד:י"ב וַיֹּאמַ֓ר ׀ יְהוָ֗ה אֱלֹהֵי֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם הַקְרֵה־נָ֥א לְפָנַ֖י הַיּ֑וֹם וַעֲשֵׂה־חֶ֕סֶד עִ֖ם אֲדֹנִ֥י אַבְרָהָֽם׃
24:12 And he said, “O LORD, God of my master Abraham, grant me good fortune this day, and deal graciously with my master Abraham:
24:12 And he said: ‘O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, send me, I pray Thee, good speed this day, and show kindness unto my master Abraham.
כ"ד:י"ב וַאֲמַר יְיָ אֱלָהֵהּ דְּרִבּוֹנִי אַבְרָהָם זַמִּין כְּעַן קֳדָמַי יוֹמָא דֵין וְעִבַד טִיבוּ עִם רִבּוֹנִי אַבְרָהָם:
כ"ד:י"ג הִנֵּ֛ה אָנֹכִ֥י נִצָּ֖ב עַל־עֵ֣ין הַמָּ֑יִם וּבְנוֹת֙ אַנְשֵׁ֣י הָעִ֔יר יֹצְאֹ֖ת לִשְׁאֹ֥ב מָֽיִם׃
24:13 Here I stand by the spring as the daughters of the townsmen come out to draw water;
24:13 Behold, I stand by the fountain of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water.
כ"ד:י"ג הָא אֲנָא קָאֵם עַל עֵינָא דְמַיָּא וּבְנַת אֱנָשֵׁי קַרְתָּא נַפְקַן לְמִמְלֵי מַיָא:
כ"ד:י"ד וְהָיָ֣ה הַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֹמַ֤ר אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ הַטִּי־נָ֤א כַדֵּךְ֙ וְאֶשְׁתֶּ֔ה וְאָמְרָ֣ה שְׁתֵ֔ה וְגַם־גְּמַלֶּ֖יךָ אַשְׁקֶ֑ה אֹתָ֤הּ הֹכַ֙חְתָּ֙ לְעַבְדְּךָ֣ לְיִצְחָ֔ק וּבָ֣הּ אֵדַ֔ע כִּי־עָשִׂ֥יתָ חֶ֖סֶד עִם־אֲדֹנִֽי׃
24:14 let the maiden to whom I say, ‘Please, lower your jar that I may drink,’ and who replies, ‘Drink, and I will also water your camels’—let her be the one whom You have decreed for Your servant Isaac. Thereby shall I know that You have dealt graciously with my master.”
24:14 So let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say: Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say: Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also; let the same be she that Thou hast appointed for Thy servant, even for Isaac; and thereby shall I know that Thou hast shown kindness unto my master.’
כ"ד:י"ד וּתְהֵי עוּלֶמְתָּא דְּאֵימַר לַהּ אַרְכִינִי כְעַן קוּלְתִיךְ וְאֶשְׁתִּי וְתֵימַר אֵשְׁתְּ וְאַף גַּמְלָךְ אַשְׁקֵי יָתַהּ זַמִּנְתָּא לְעַבְדָךְ לְיִצְחָק וּבַהּ אִידַע אֲרֵי עֲבַדְתָּ טִיבוּ עִם רִבּוֹנִי:
כ"ד:ט"ו וַֽיְהִי־ה֗וּא טֶרֶם֮ כִּלָּ֣ה לְדַבֵּר֒ וְהִנֵּ֧ה רִבְקָ֣ה יֹצֵ֗את אֲשֶׁ֤ר יֻלְּדָה֙ לִבְתוּאֵ֣ל בֶּן־מִלְכָּ֔ה אֵ֥שֶׁת נָח֖וֹר אֲחִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֑ם וְכַדָּ֖הּ עַל־שִׁכְמָֽהּ׃
24:15 He had scarcely finished speaking, when Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor, came out with her jar on her shoulder.
24:15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
כ"ד:ט"ו וַהֲוָה הוּא עַד לָא שֵׁיצֵי לְמַלָּלָא וְהָא רִבְקָה נְפָקַת דְּאִתְיְלִידַת לִבְתוּאֵל בַּר מִלְכָּה אִתַּת נָחוֹר אֲחוּהִי דְאַבְרָהָם וְקוּלְתַהּ עַל כַּתְפַּהּ:
כ"ד:ט"ז וְהַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ טֹבַ֤ת מַרְאֶה֙ מְאֹ֔ד בְּתוּלָ֕ה וְאִ֖ישׁ לֹ֣א יְדָעָ֑הּ וַתֵּ֣רֶד הָעַ֔יְנָה וַתְּמַלֵּ֥א כַדָּ֖הּ וַתָּֽעַל׃
24:16 The maiden was very beautiful, a virgin whom no man had known. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up.
24:16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her; and she went down to the fountain, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
כ"ד:ט"ז וְעוּלֶמְתָּא שַׁפִּירַת חֵיזוּ (נ"י שַׁפִּירָא לְמֶחֱזֵי) לַחֲדָא בְּתֻלְתָּא וּגְבַר לָא יַדְעָהּ וּנְחָתַת לְעֵינָא וּמְלַת קוּלְתַהּ וּסְלֵקָת:
כ"ד:י"ז וַיָּ֥רָץ הָעֶ֖בֶד לִקְרָאתָ֑הּ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הַגְמִיאִ֥ינִי נָ֛א מְעַט־מַ֖יִם מִכַּדֵּֽךְ׃
24:17 The servant ran toward her and said, “Please, let me sip a little water from your jar.”
24:17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said: ‘Give me to drink, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher.’
כ"ד:י"ז וּרְהַט עַבְדָא לִקְדָמוּתַהּ וַאֲמַר אַשְׁקִינִי (ס"א אַטְעֵמְנִי) כְעַן זְעֵיר מַיָּא מִקּוּלְתִיךְ:
כ"ד:י"ח וַתֹּ֖אמֶר שְׁתֵ֣ה אֲדֹנִ֑י וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר וַתֹּ֧רֶד כַּדָּ֛הּ עַל־יָדָ֖הּ וַתַּשְׁקֵֽהוּ׃
24:18 “Drink, my lord,” she said, and she quickly lowered her jar upon her hand and let him drink.
24:18 And she said: ‘Drink, my lord’; and she hastened, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
כ"ד:י"ח וַאֲמֶרֶת אֵשְׁתְּ רִבּוֹנִי וְאוֹחִיאַת וַאֲחֵיתַת קוּלְתַהּ עַל יְדַהּ וְאַשְׁקְתֵיהּ:
כ"ד:י"ט וַתְּכַ֖ל לְהַשְׁקֹת֑וֹ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר גַּ֤ם לִגְמַלֶּ֙יךָ֙ אֶשְׁאָ֔ב עַ֥ד אִם־כִּלּ֖וּ לִשְׁתֹּֽת׃
24:19 When she had let him drink his fill, she said, “I will also draw for your camels, until they finish drinking.”
24:19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said: ‘I will draw for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.’
כ"ד:י"ט וְשֵׁיצִיאַת לְאַשְׁקָיוּתֵיהּ וַאֲמֶרֶת אַף לְגַמְלָךְ אַמְלֵי עַד דִּי סַפְקוּן לְמִשְׁתֵּי:
כ"ד:כ׳ וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר וַתְּעַ֤ר כַּדָּהּ֙ אֶל־הַשֹּׁ֔קֶת וַתָּ֥רָץ ע֛וֹד אֶֽל־הַבְּאֵ֖ר לִשְׁאֹ֑ב וַתִּשְׁאַ֖ב לְכָל־גְּמַלָּֽיו׃
24:20 Quickly emptying her jar into the trough, she ran back to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels.
24:20 And she hastened, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw, and drew for all his camels.
כ"ד:כ׳ וְאוֹחִיאַת וּנְפָצַת קוּלְתַהּ לְבֵית שַׁקְיָא וּרְהָטַת עוֹד לְבֵירָא לְמִמְלֵי וּמְלַת לְכָל גַּמְלוֹהִי:
כ"ד:כ"א וְהָאִ֥ישׁ מִשְׁתָּאֵ֖ה לָ֑הּ מַחֲרִ֕ישׁ לָדַ֗עַת הַֽהִצְלִ֧יחַ יְהוָ֛ה דַּרְכּ֖וֹ אִם־לֹֽא׃
24:21 The man, meanwhile, stood gazing at her, silently wondering whether the LORD had made his errand successful or not.
24:21 And the man looked stedfastly on her; holding his peace, to know whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.
כ"ד:כ"א וְגַבְרָא שָׁהֵי בַהּ מִסְתַּכֵּל שָׁתִיק לְמֵידַע הַאַצְלַח יְיָ אָרְחֵיהּ אִם לָא:
כ"ד:כ"ב וַיְהִ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר כִּלּ֤וּ הַגְּמַלִּים֙ לִשְׁתּ֔וֹת וַיִּקַּ֤ח הָאִישׁ֙ נֶ֣זֶם זָהָ֔ב בֶּ֖קַע מִשְׁקָל֑וֹ וּשְׁנֵ֤י צְמִידִים֙ עַל־יָדֶ֔יהָ עֲשָׂרָ֥ה זָהָ֖ב מִשְׁקָלָֽם׃
24:22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold nose-ring weighing a half-shekel,bHeb. beqa‘. and two gold bands for her arms, ten shekels in weight.
24:22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden ring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;
כ"ד:כ"ב וַהֲוָה כַּד סַפִּיקוּ גַמְלַיָּא לְמִשְׁתֵּי וּנְסֵיב גַּבְרָא קָדָשָׁא דְדַהֲבָא תִּקְלָא מַתְקְלֵיהּ וּתְרֵין שֵׁירִין עַל יְדָהָא מַתְקַל עֲשַׂר סִלְעִין דְּדַהֲבָא מַתְקַלְהוֹן:
כ"ד:כ"ג וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ בַּת־מִ֣י אַ֔תְּ הַגִּ֥ידִי נָ֖א לִ֑י הֲיֵ֧שׁ בֵּית־אָבִ֛יךְ מָק֥וֹם לָ֖נוּ לָלִֽין׃
24:23 “Pray tell me,” he said, “whose daughter are you? Is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”
24:23 and said: ‘Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee. Is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in?’
כ"ד:כ"ג וַאֲמַר בַּת מָן אַתְּ חַוִּי כְעַן לִי הַאִית בֵּית אָבוּךְ אָתַר כָּשַׁר לָנָא לִמְבָת:
כ"ד:כ"ד וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו בַּת־בְּתוּאֵ֖ל אָנֹ֑כִי בֶּן־מִלְכָּ֕ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָלְדָ֖ה לְנָחֽוֹר׃
24:24 She replied, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.”
24:24 And she said unto him: ‘I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore unto Nahor.’
כ"ד:כ"ד וַאֲמֶרֶת לֵיהּ בַּת בְּתוּאֵל אֲנָא בַּר מִלְכָּא דִּילֵידַת לְנָחוֹר:
כ"ד:כ"ה וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו גַּם־תֶּ֥בֶן גַּם־מִסְפּ֖וֹא רַ֣ב עִמָּ֑נוּ גַּם־מָק֖וֹם לָלֽוּן׃
24:25 And she went on, “There is plenty of strawcHeb. teben, shredded straw, which in the East is mixed with feed; cf. v. 32. and feed at home, and also room to spend the night.”
24:25 She said moreover unto him: ‘We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.’
כ"ד:כ"ה וַאֲמֶרֶת לֵיהּ אַף תִּבְנָא אַף כִּסָּתָא סַגִּי עִמָּנָא אַף אָתַר כָּשַׁר לִמְבָת:
כ"ד:כ"ו וַיִּקֹּ֣ד הָאִ֔ישׁ וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ לַֽיהוָֽה׃
24:26 The man bowed low in homage to the LORD
24:26 And the man bowed his head, and prostrated himself before the LORD.
כ"ד:כ"ו וּכְרַע גַּבְרָא וּסְגִיד קֳדָם יְיָ:
