Genesis 24:27–24:52
כ"ד:כ"ז וַיֹּ֗אמֶר בָּר֤וּךְ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵי֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹֽא־עָזַ֥ב חַסְדּ֛וֹ וַאֲמִתּ֖וֹ מֵעִ֣ם אֲדֹנִ֑י אָנֹכִ֗י בַּדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ נָחַ֣נִי יְהוָ֔ה בֵּ֖ית אֲחֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽי׃
24:27 and said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld His steadfast faithfulness from my master. For I have been guided on my errand by the LORD, to the house of my master’s kinsmen.”
24:27 And he said: ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who hath not forsaken His mercy and His truth toward my master; as for me, the LORD hath led me in the way to the house of my master’s brethren.’
כ"ד:כ"ז וַאֲמַר בְּרִיךְ יְיָ אֱלָהָא דְרִבּוֹנִי אַבְרָהָם דִּי לָא מְנַע טִיבוּתֵיהּ וְקוּשְׁטֵיהּ מִן רִבּוֹנִי אֲנָא בְּאוֹרַח תַּקְנָא דַּבְּרַנִי יְיָ בֵּית אַחוֹהִי דְרִבּוֹנִי:
כ"ד:כ"ח וַתָּ֙רָץ֙ הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ וַתַּגֵּ֖ד לְבֵ֣ית אִמָּ֑הּ כַּדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃
24:28 The maiden ran and told all this to her mother’s household.
24:28 And the damsel ran, and told her mother’s house according to these words.
כ"ד:כ"ח וּרְהָטַת עוּלֶמְתָּא וְחַוִּיאַת לְבֵית אִמַּהּ כְּפִתְגָּמַיָּא הָאִלֵּין:
כ"ד:כ"ט וּלְרִבְקָ֥ה אָ֖ח וּשְׁמ֣וֹ לָבָ֑ן וַיָּ֨רָץ לָבָ֧ן אֶל־הָאִ֛ישׁ הַח֖וּצָה אֶל־הָעָֽיִן׃
24:29 Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban. Laban ran out to the man at the spring—
24:29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban; and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the fountain.
כ"ד:כ"ט וּלְרִבְקָה אָחָא וּשְׁמֵיהּ לָבָן וּרְהַט לָבָן לְוַת גַּבְרָא לְבָרָא לְוַת עֵינָא:
כ"ד:ל׳ וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כִּרְאֹ֣ת אֶת־הַנֶּ֗זֶם וְֽאֶת־הַצְּמִדִים֮ עַל־יְדֵ֣י אֲחֹתוֹ֒ וּכְשָׁמְע֗וֹ אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֞י רִבְקָ֤ה אֲחֹתוֹ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּֽה־דִבֶּ֥ר אֵלַ֖י הָאִ֑ישׁ וַיָּבֹא֙ אֶל־הָאִ֔ישׁ וְהִנֵּ֛ה עֹמֵ֥ד עַל־הַגְּמַלִּ֖ים עַל־הָעָֽיִן׃
24:30 when he saw the nose-ring and the bands on his sister’s arms, and when he heard his sister Rebekah say, “Thus the man spoke to me.” He went up to the man, who was still standing beside the camels at the spring.
24:30 And it came to pass, when he saw the ring, and the bracelets upon his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying: ‘Thus spoke the man unto me, ‘that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the fountain.
כ"ד:ל׳ וַהֲוָה כַּד חָזָא יָת קָדָשָׁא וְיָת שֵׁירַיָּא עַל יְדֵי אֲחָתֵיהּ וְכַד שְׁמַע יָת פִּתְגָּמֵי רִבְקָה אֲחָתֵיהּ לְמֵימַר כְּדֵין מַלֵּיל עִמִּי גַּבְרָא וַאֲתָא לְוַת גַּבְרָא וְהָא קָאֵם עִלַּוֵּי גַמְלַיָּא עַל עֵינָא:
כ"ד:ל"א וַיֹּ֕אמֶר בּ֖וֹא בְּר֣וּךְ יְהוָ֑ה לָ֤מָּה תַעֲמֹד֙ בַּח֔וּץ וְאָנֹכִי֙ פִּנִּ֣יתִי הַבַּ֔יִת וּמָק֖וֹם לַגְּמַלִּֽים׃
24:31 “Come in, O blessed of the LORD,” he said, “why do you remain outside, when I have made ready the house and a place for the camels?”
24:31 And he said: ‘Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have cleared the house, and made room for the camels.’
כ"ד:ל"א וַאֲמַר עוּל בְּרִיכָא דַיְיָ לְמָא אַתְּ קָאֵם בְּבָרָא וַאֲנָא פַּנֵּיתִי בֵיתָא וַאֲתַר כָּשַׁר לְגַמְלַיָּא:
כ"ד:ל"ב וַיָּבֹ֤א הָאִישׁ֙ הַבַּ֔יְתָה וַיְפַתַּ֖ח הַגְּמַלִּ֑ים וַיִּתֵּ֨ן תֶּ֤בֶן וּמִסְפּוֹא֙ לַגְּמַלִּ֔ים וּמַ֙יִם֙ לִרְחֹ֣ץ רַגְלָ֔יו וְרַגְלֵ֥י הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתּֽוֹ׃
24:32 So the man entered the house, and the camels were unloaded. The camels were given straw and feed, and water was brought to bathe his feet and the feet of the men with him.
24:32 And the man came into the house, and he ungirded the camels; and he gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men that were with him.
כ"ד:ל"ב וְעַל גַּבְרָא לְבֵיתָא וּשְׁרָא גַּמְלַיָּא וִיהַב תִּבְנָא וְכִסָּתָא לְגַמְלַיָּא וּמַיָּא לְאַסְחָאָה רַגְלוֹהִי וְרַגְלֵי גֻבְרַיָּא דְּעִמֵּיהּ:
כ"ד:ל"ג ויישם [וַיּוּשַׂ֤ם] לְפָנָיו֙ לֶאֱכֹ֔ל וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א אֹכַ֔ל עַ֥ד אִם־דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי דְּבָרָ֑י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר דַּבֵּֽר׃
24:33 But when food was set before him, he said, “I will not eat until I have told my tale.” He said, “Speak, then.”
24:33 And there was set food before him to eat; but he said: ‘I will not eat, until I have told mine errand.’ And he said: ‘Speak on.’
כ"ד:ל"ג וְשַׁוִּיאוּ קֳדָמוֹהִי לְמֵיכָל וַאֲמַר לָא אֵיכוּל עַד דַּאֲמַלֵּל פִּתְגָּמָי וַאֲמַר מַלֵּל:
כ"ד:ל"ד וַיֹּאמַ֑ר עֶ֥בֶד אַבְרָהָ֖ם אָנֹֽכִי׃
24:34 “I am Abraham’s servant,” he began.
24:34 And he said: ‘I am Abraham’s servant.
כ"ד:ל"ד וַאֲמַר עַבְדָּא דְאַבְרָהָם אָנָא:
כ"ד:ל"ה וַיהוָ֞ה בֵּרַ֧ךְ אֶת־אֲדֹנִ֛י מְאֹ֖ד וַיִּגְדָּ֑ל וַיִּתֶּן־ל֞וֹ צֹ֤אן וּבָקָר֙ וְכֶ֣סֶף וְזָהָ֔ב וַעֲבָדִם֙ וּשְׁפָחֹ֔ת וּגְמַלִּ֖ים וַחֲמֹרִֽים׃
24:35 “The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become rich: He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female slaves, camels and asses.
24:35 And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great; and He hath given him flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and men-servants and maid-servants, and camels and asses.
כ"ד:ל"ה וַייָ בָּרִיךְ יָת רִבּוֹנִי לַחֲדָא וּרְבָא וִיהַב לֵיהּ עָאן וְתוֹרִין וּכְסַף וּדְהַב וְעַבְדִּין וְאַמְהָן וְגַמְלִין וַחֲמָרִין:
כ"ד:ל"ו וַתֵּ֡לֶד שָׂרָה֩ אֵ֨שֶׁת אֲדֹנִ֥י בֵן֙ לַֽאדֹנִ֔י אַחֲרֵ֖י זִקְנָתָ֑הּ וַיִּתֶּן־לּ֖וֹ אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לֽוֹ׃
24:36 And Sarah, my master’s wife, bore my master a son in her old age, and he has assigned to him everything he owns.
24:36 And Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old; and unto him hath he given all that he hath.
כ"ד:ל"ו וִילֵידַת שָׂרָה אִתַּת רִבּוֹנִי בַר לְרִבּוֹנִי בָּתַר דְּסֵיבָת וִיהַב לֵיהּ יָת כָּל דִּילֵיהּ:
כ"ד:ל"ז וַיַּשְׁבִּעֵ֥נִי אֲדֹנִ֖י לֵאמֹ֑ר לֹא־תִקַּ֤ח אִשָּׁה֙ לִבְנִ֔י מִבְּנוֹת֙ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י יֹשֵׁ֥ב בְּאַרְצֽוֹ׃
24:37 Now my master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I dwell;
24:37 And my master made me swear, saying: Thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell.
כ"ד:ל"ז וְקַיֵּם עָלַי רִבּוֹנִי לְמֵימָר לָא תִסַּב אִתְּתָא לִבְרִי מִבְּנַת כְּנַעֲנָאֵי דִּי אֲנָא יָתֵב בְּאַרְעֵיהּ:
כ"ד:ל"ח אִם־לֹ֧א אֶל־בֵּית־אָבִ֛י תֵּלֵ֖ךְ וְאֶל־מִשְׁפַּחְתִּ֑י וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ אִשָּׁ֖ה לִבְנִֽי׃
24:38 but you shall go to my father’s house, to my kindred, and get a wife for my son.’
24:38 But thou shalt go unto my father’s house, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son.
כ"ד:ל"ח אֱלָהֵן לְבֵית אַבָּא תֵּזֵיל וּלְזַרְעִיתִי וְתִסַּב אִתְּתָא לִבְרִי:
כ"ד:ל"ט וָאֹמַ֖ר אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֑י אֻלַ֛י לֹא־תֵלֵ֥ךְ הָאִשָּׁ֖ה אַחֲרָֽי׃
24:39 And I said to my master, ‘What if the woman does not follow me?’
24:39 And I said unto my master: Peradventure the woman will not follow me.
כ"ד:ל"ט וַאֲמָרִית לְרִבּוֹנִי מָאִים לָא תֵיתֵי אִתְּתָא בַּתְרָי:
כ"ד:מ׳ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלָ֑י יְהוָ֞ה אֲשֶׁר־הִתְהַלַּ֣כְתִּי לְפָנָ֗יו יִשְׁלַ֨ח מַלְאָכ֤וֹ אִתָּךְ֙ וְהִצְלִ֣יחַ דַּרְכֶּ֔ךָ וְלָקַחְתָּ֤ אִשָּׁה֙ לִבְנִ֔י מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתִּ֖י וּמִבֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי׃
24:40 He replied to me, ‘The LORD, whose ways I have followed, will send His angel with you and make your errand successful; and you will get a wife for my son from my kindred, from my father’s house.
24:40 And he said unto me: The LORD, before whom I walk, will send His angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house;
כ"ד:מ׳ וַאֲמַר לִי יְיָ דִּי פְלָחִית קֳדָמוֹהִי יִשְׁלַח מַלְאָכֵיהּ עִמָּךְ וְיַצְלַח אָרְחָךְ וְתִסַּב אִתְּתָא לִבְרִי מִזַּרְעִיתִי וּמִבֵּית אַבָּא:
כ"ד:מ"א אָ֤ז תִּנָּקֶה֙ מֵאָ֣לָתִ֔י כִּ֥י תָב֖וֹא אֶל־מִשְׁפַּחְתִּ֑י וְאִם־לֹ֤א יִתְּנוּ֙ לָ֔ךְ וְהָיִ֥יתָ נָקִ֖י מֵאָלָתִֽי׃
24:41 Thus only shall you be freed from my adjuration: if, when you come to my kindred, they refuse you—only then shall you be freed from my adjuration.’
24:41 then shalt thou be clear from my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give her not to thee, thou shalt be clear from my oath.
כ"ד:מ"א בְּכֵן תְּהֵי זַכַּי (נ"י זַכָּא) מִמּוּמָתִי אֲרֵי תְהַךְ לְזַרְעִיתִי וְאִם לָא יִתְּנוּן לָךְ וּתְהֵי זַכַּי מִמּוּמָתִי:
כ"ד:מ"ב וָאָבֹ֥א הַיּ֖וֹם אֶל־הָעָ֑יִן וָאֹמַ֗ר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵי֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם אִם־יֶשְׁךָ־נָּא֙ מַצְלִ֣יחַ דַּרְכִּ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י הֹלֵ֥ךְ עָלֶֽיהָ׃
24:42 “I came today to the spring, and I said: O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if You would indeed grant success to the errand on which I am engaged!
24:42 And I came this day unto the fountain, and said: O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, if now Thou do prosper my way which I go:
כ"ד:מ"ב וְאָתִית (נ"י וַאֲתֵיתִי) יוֹמָא דֵין לְעֵינָא וַאֲמָרִית יְיָ אֱלָהָא דְּרִבּוֹנִי אַבְרָהָם אִם אִית כְּעַן רַעֲוָא קֳדָמָךְ לְאַצְלָחָא אָרְחִי דִּי אֲנָא אָזֵיל עֲלַהּ:
כ"ד:מ"ג הִנֵּ֛ה אָנֹכִ֥י נִצָּ֖ב עַל־עֵ֣ין הַמָּ֑יִם וְהָיָ֤ה הָֽעַלְמָה֙ הַיֹּצֵ֣את לִשְׁאֹ֔ב וְאָמַרְתִּ֣י אֵלֶ֔יהָ הַשְׁקִֽינִי־נָ֥א מְעַט־מַ֖יִם מִכַּדֵּֽךְ׃
24:43 As I stand by the spring of water, let the young woman who comes out to draw and to whom I say, ‘Please, let me drink a little water from your jar,’
24:43 behold, I stand by the fountain of water; and let it come to pass, that the maiden that cometh forth to draw, to whom I shall say: Give me, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher to drink;
כ"ד:מ"ג הָא אֲנָא קָאֵם עַל עֵינָא דְמַיָּא וִיהֵי עוּלֶמְתָּא דְּתִפּוֹק לְמִמְלֵי וְאֵימַר לַהּ אַשְׁקִינִי כְעַן זְעֵיר מַיָּא מִקּוּלְתִיךְ:
כ"ד:מ"ד וְאָמְרָ֤ה אֵלַי֙ גַּם־אַתָּ֣ה שְׁתֵ֔ה וְגַ֥ם לִגְמַלֶּ֖יךָ אֶשְׁאָ֑ב הִ֣וא הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־הֹכִ֥יחַ יְהוָ֖ה לְבֶן־אֲדֹנִֽי׃
24:44 and who answers, ‘You may drink, and I will also draw for your camels’—let her be the wife whom the LORD has decreed for my master’s son.’
24:44 and she shall say to me: Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels; let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed for my master’s son.
כ"ד:מ"ד וְתֵימַר לִי אַף אַתְּ אֵשְׁתְּ וְאַף לְגַמְלָךְ אַמְלִי הִיא אִתְּתָא דְּזַמִּין יְיָ לְבַר רִבּוֹנִי:
הוכיח. בֵּרֵר וְהוֹדִיעַ, וְכֵן כָּל הוֹכָחָה שֶׁבַּמִּקְרָא בֵּרוּר דָּבָר:
כ"ד:מ"ה אֲנִי֩ טֶ֨רֶם אֲכַלֶּ֜ה לְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל־לִבִּ֗י וְהִנֵּ֨ה רִבְקָ֤ה יֹצֵאת֙ וְכַדָּ֣הּ עַל־שִׁכְמָ֔הּ וַתֵּ֥רֶד הָעַ֖יְנָה וַתִּשְׁאָ֑ב וָאֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶ֖יהָ הַשְׁקִ֥ינִי נָֽא׃
24:45 I had scarcely finished praying in my heart, when Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder, and went down to the spring and drew. And I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’
24:45 And before I had done speaking to my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the fountain, and drew. And I said unto her: Let me drink, I pray thee.
כ"ד:מ"ה אֲנָא עַד לָא שֵׁיצִיתִי לְמַלָּלָא בְלִבִּי וְהָא רִבְקָה נְפָקַת וְקוּלְתַהּ עַל כַּתְפַּהּ וּנְחָתַת לְעֵינָא וּמְלָת וַאֲמָרִית לַהּ אַשְׁקִינִי כְעָן:
כ"ד:מ"ו וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר וַתּ֤וֹרֶד כַּדָּהּ֙ מֵֽעָלֶ֔יהָ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁתֵ֔ה וְגַם־גְּמַלֶּ֖יךָ אַשְׁקֶ֑ה וָאֵ֕שְׁתְּ וְגַ֥ם הַגְּמַלִּ֖ים הִשְׁקָֽתָה׃
24:46 She quickly lowered her jar and said, ‘Drink, and I will also water your camels.’ So I drank, and she also watered the camels.
24:46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said: Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also. So I drank, and she made the camels drink also.
כ"ד:מ"ו וְאוֹחִיאַת וַאֲחִיתַת קוּלְתַהּ מִנַּהּ וַאֲמָרַת אֵשְׁתְּ וְאַף גַּמְלָךְ אַשְׁקִי וּשְׁתֵיתִי וְאַף גַּמְלַיָּא אַשְׁקִיאַת:
כ"ד:מ"ז וָאֶשְׁאַ֣ל אֹתָ֗הּ וָאֹמַר֮ בַּת־מִ֣י אַתְּ֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר בַּת־בְּתוּאֵל֙ בֶּן־נָח֔וֹר אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָֽלְדָה־לּ֖וֹ מִלְכָּ֑ה וָאָשִׂ֤ם הַנֶּ֙זֶם֙ עַל־אַפָּ֔הּ וְהַצְּמִידִ֖ים עַל־יָדֶֽיהָ׃
24:47 I inquired of her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ And I put the ring on her nose and the bands on her arms.
24:47 And I asked her, and said: Whose daughter art thou? And she said: The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore unto him. And I put the ring upon her nose, and the bracelets upon her hands.
כ"ד:מ"ז וּשְׁאֵילִית יָתַהּ וַאֲמָרִית בַּת מָן אַתְּ וַאֲמֶרֶת בַּת בְּתוּאֵל בַּר נָחוֹר דִּילֵידַת לֵיהּ מִלְכָּה וְשַׁוֵּיתִי קָדָשָׁא עַל אַפַּהּ וְשֵׁירַיָּא עַל יְדָהָא:
כ"ד:מ"ח וָאֶקֹּ֥ד וָֽאֶשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖ה לַיהוָ֑ה וָאֲבָרֵ֗ךְ אֶת־יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵי֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר הִנְחַ֙נִי֙ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אֱמֶ֔ת לָקַ֛חַת אֶת־בַּת־אֲחִ֥י אֲדֹנִ֖י לִבְנֽוֹ׃
24:48 Then I bowed low in homage to the LORD and blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right way to get the daughter of my master’s brother for his son.
24:48 And I bowed my head, and prostrated myself before the LORD, and blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter for his son.
כ"ד:מ"ח וּכְרָעִית וּסְגָדִית קֳדָם יְיָ וּבָרֵכִית יָת יְיָ אֱלָהֵהּ דְּרִבּוֹנִי אַבְרָהָם דְּדַבְּרַנִי בְּאוֹרַח קְשׁוֹט לְמִיסַב יָת בַּת אֲחוּהִי דְרִבּוֹנִי לִבְרֵיהּ:
כ"ד:מ"ט וְ֠עַתָּה אִם־יֶשְׁכֶ֨ם עֹשִׂ֜ים חֶ֧סֶד וֶֽאֱמֶ֛ת אֶת־אֲדֹנִ֖י הַגִּ֣ידוּ לִ֑י וְאִם־לֹ֕א הַגִּ֣ידוּ לִ֔י וְאֶפְנֶ֥ה עַל־יָמִ֖ין א֥וֹ עַל־שְׂמֹֽאל׃
24:49 And now, if you mean to treat my master with true kindness, tell me; and if not, tell me also, that I may turn right or left.”
24:49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.’
כ"ד:מ"ט וּכְעַן אִם אִיתֵיכוֹן עָבְדִין טִיבוּ וּקְשׁוֹט עִם רִבּוֹנִי חַוּוֹ לִי וְאִם לָא חַוּוֹ לִי וְאִתְפְּנֵי עַל יַמִּינָא אוֹ עַל שְׂמָאלָא:
כ"ד:נ׳ וַיַּ֨עַן לָבָ֤ן וּבְתוּאֵל֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ מֵיְהוָ֖ה יָצָ֣א הַדָּבָ֑ר לֹ֥א נוּכַ֛ל דַּבֵּ֥ר אֵלֶ֖יךָ רַ֥ע אוֹ־טֽוֹב׃
24:50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “The matter was decreed by the LORD; we cannot speak to you bad or good.
24:50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said: ‘The thing proceedeth from the LORD; we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.
כ"ד:נ׳ וְאָתֵיב לָבָן וּבְתוּאֵל וַאֲמַרוּ מִן קֳדָם יְיָ נְפַק פִּתְגָּמָא לֵית אֲנַחְנָא יָכְלִין לְמַלָּלָא עִמָּךְ בִּישׁ אוֹ טָב:
