כ"ד:י׳ וַיִּקַּ֣ח הָ֠עֶבֶד עֲשָׂרָ֨ה גְמַלִּ֜ים מִגְּמַלֵּ֤י אֲדֹנָיו֙ וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ וְכָל־ט֥וּב אֲדֹנָ֖יו בְּיָד֑וֹ וַיָּ֗קָם וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ אֶל־אֲרַ֥ם נַֽהֲרַ֖יִם אֶל־עִ֥יר נָחֽוֹר׃
24:10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and set out, taking with him all the bounty of his master; and he made his way to Aram-naharaim, to the city of Nahor.
24:10 And the servant took ten camels, of the camels of his master, and departed; having all goodly things of his master’s in his hand; and he arose, and went to Aram-naharaim, unto the city of Nahor.
כ"ד:י׳ וּדְבַר עַבְדָא עַשְׂרָא גַמְלִין מִגַּמְלֵי רִבּוֹנֵה וַאֲזַל וְכָל שְׁפַר רִבּוֹנֵיהּ בִּידֵיהּ וְקָם וַאֲזַל לַאֲרָם דִּי עַל פְּרַת לְקַרְתָּא דְנָחוֹר:
כ"ד:י׳ אור החיים
1עֲשָׂרָה גְמַלִּים מִגְּמַלֵּי. פֵּירוּשׁ טַעַם קַחְתּוֹ עֲשָׂרָה, כִּי בְּעֵרֶךְ גְּמַלֵּי אֲדוֹנָיו כְּלוֹקֵחַ אֶחָד הָיוּ, וְזוּלַת זֶה הָיָה מַסְפִּיק בְּאֶחָד.
עשרה גמלים, Ten camels, etc. One reason that Eliezer took ten camels was that relative to Abraham's wealth this was equivalent to an ordinary person taking one single camel loaded with gifts.
2עוֹד יִרְצֶה שֶׁלָּקַח עֲשָׂרָה גְּמַלִּים, פֵּירוּשׁ: הַרְבֵּה, עַל דֶּרֶךְ אָמְרוֹ (שמואל א א:ח) ״טוֹב לָךְ מֵעֲשָׂרָה בָּנִים״.
Another reason is that the number ten simply means "many," as we find in Samuel I 1,8, where Elkanan asks Channah if he was not worth more to her than "ten sons?" The meaning there is clearly not the number ten, but "ten" as indicative of a large number.
3וְאָמְרוֹ מִגְּמַלֵּי אֲדֹנָיו. פֵּירוּשׁ: מֵהַמְיוּחָדִים לְצָרְכּוֹ, הַמּוּבְחָרִים אֶצְלוֹ כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּטְעֲנוּ הַרְבֵּה, וּבָא לִשְׁלוֹל שְׁאָר הַגְּמַלִּים שֶׁהָיוּ לְאַבְרָהָם מִכְּלַל הַנְּכָסִים.
The reason the Torah adds that the camels belonged to his master (something we would have assumed even without it being mentioned) is that these camels were specially trained to answer Abraham's specific needs. They were capable of carrying especially heavy loads.
4וְאָמְרוֹ וְכָל טוּב פֵּרוּשׁ: כָּל מֻבְחָר שֶׁבְּקִנְיָנֵי אֲדוֹנוֹ, זָהָב וַאֲבָנִים טוֹבוֹת וּמַרְגָּלִיּוֹת. וְהַטַּעַם – אִם לֹא תִרְצֶה לָבֹא אַחֲרָיו, יַרְאֶה בֵּית נְכֹתוֹ. גַּם לְאִם יִתְחַיֵּב בְּמֹהַר, יַרְאֶה כִּי יֵשׁ מִמָּה לְהַרְבּוֹת מֹהַר וּמַתָּן. וְאָמְרוֹ בְּיָדוֹ פֵּרוּשׁ: שֶׁבְּיָדוֹ.
The Torah adds: וכל טוב אדוניו, "and all the good things of his master," to tell us that Eliezer took the choicest of all the precious possessions of Abraham. This was in order to persuade the girl in the event that she would initially refuse to move away from her parental home. Seeing that her husband-to-be possessed such wealth might change her mind. The word בידו means the same as שבידו, something that was under Eliezer's control (inasmuch as he was in charge of all of Abraham's possessions).
כ"ד:י"א וַיַּבְרֵ֧ךְ הַגְּמַלִּ֛ים מִח֥וּץ לָעִ֖יר אֶל־בְּאֵ֣ר הַמָּ֑יִם לְעֵ֣ת עֶ֔רֶב לְעֵ֖ת צֵ֥את הַשֹּׁאֲבֹֽת׃
24:11 He made the camels kneel down by the well outside the city, at evening time, the time when women come out to draw water.
24:11 And he made the camels to kneel down without the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time that women go out to draw water.
כ"ד:י"א וְאַשְׁרֵי גַמְלַיָּא מִבָּרָא לְקַרְתָּא לִבְאֵרָא דְמַיָּא לְעִדַּן רַמְשָׁא לְעִדַּן דְּנַפְקַן מַלְיָתָא:
כ"ד:י"ב וַיֹּאמַ֓ר ׀ יְהוָ֗ה אֱלֹהֵי֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם הַקְרֵה־נָ֥א לְפָנַ֖י הַיּ֑וֹם וַעֲשֵׂה־חֶ֕סֶד עִ֖ם אֲדֹנִ֥י אַבְרָהָֽם׃
24:12 And he said, “O LORD, God of my master Abraham, grant me good fortune this day, and deal graciously with my master Abraham:
24:12 And he said: ‘O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, send me, I pray Thee, good speed this day, and show kindness unto my master Abraham.
כ"ד:י"ב וַאֲמַר יְיָ אֱלָהֵהּ דְּרִבּוֹנִי אַבְרָהָם זַמִּין כְּעַן קֳדָמַי יוֹמָא דֵין וְעִבַד טִיבוּ עִם רִבּוֹנִי אַבְרָהָם:

1וַיֹּאמֶר ה׳ וְגוֹ׳ הַקְרֵה וְגוֹ׳. בָּטוּחַ הָיָה אֱלִיעֶזֶר בַּאֲדוֹנוֹ שֶׁתְּפִלָּתוֹ מְקֻבֶּלֶת אֲשֶׁר הִתְפַּלֵּל ״הוּא יִשְׁלַח מַלְאָכוֹ״ וְגוֹ׳, וְהוֹסִיף הוּא לְהִתְפַּלֵּל שֶׁיִּהְיֶה הוּא רָאוּי לֵיעָשׂוֹת הַדָּבָר עַל יָדוֹ, כִּי יִמָּצֵא לִפְעָמִים שֶׁתִּהְיֶה מְנִיעָה לְקַיֵּם דִּבְרֵי הַתְּפִלָּה מִצַּד הָאֶמְצָעִי, לָזֶה הִתְפַּלֵּל לֵאלֹהֵי אֲדוֹנוֹ שֶׁיַּקְרֶה לְפָנָיו.
ויאמר: ה׳ הקרה נא, He said: "G'd! please make it happen, etc." Eliezer was certain that his master's prayer that G'd would send His angel ahead of Eliezer to facilitate his mission would be fulfilled. He added a prayer expressing the hope that he would be found worthy to be the instrument through which Abraham's prayer would be fulfilled. It happens on occasion that the prayer of the original petitioner goes unanswered due to the unworthiness of the petitioner's messenger.
2וְטַעַם שֶׁהֻצְרַךְ לַעֲשׂוֹת סֵדֶר זֶה, כִּי חָשׁ לְבַל יַטְעוּהוּ מִשְׁפַּחַת אַבְרָהָם כְּשֶׁיֵּדְעוּ כִּי הוּא מְצֻוֶּה וְעוֹמֵד לָקַחַת בַּת מֵהֶם, יִתְּנוּ לוֹ שִׁפְחָה מִשִּׁפְחוֹתָם אֲשֶׁר אִתָּם בַּבַּיִת וְיֹאמְרוּ כִּי הִיא מִזַּרְעָם. לָזֶה נִתְחַכֵּם וְעָשָׂה כְּסֵדֶר זֶה בְּהַבְחָנָה מֻבְהֶקֶת שֶׁהִיא הַוַּתְרָנוּת הַמֻּפְלָאָה, שֶׁנּוֹתֶנֶת יוֹתֵר מִמַּה שֶׁשָּׁאַל מִמֶּנָּה. גַּם בָּזֶה יֵדַע אוֹתָהּ יְדִיעָה צוֹדֶקֶת כִּי הִיא מִבֵּית אַבְרָהָם, שֶׁהֵשִׁיחָה לְפִי תֻמָּהּ מִבְּלִי דַעַת דָּבָר מִמֶּנּוּ כִּי אוֹתָהּ יְבַקֵּשׁ, וּפֶתַח דְּבָרֶיהָ הֵאִירוּ בְּאָמְרָהּ (בראשית כד:כד) ״בַּת בְּתוּאֵל״ וְגוֹ׳:
The reason Eliezer had to proceed in this order was that he feared Abraham's family might deceive him and try to palm off one of their maidservants on him, claiming that she was their family. He therefore stipulated that the girl to be regarded as suitable for Isaac should proceed to do more than he asked of her by also offering to water his camels. This would be characteristic of a girl who was related to Abraham. In fact Rebeccah described herself immediately as a daughter of Bethuel (verse 24).
כ"ד:י"ג הִנֵּ֛ה אָנֹכִ֥י נִצָּ֖ב עַל־עֵ֣ין הַמָּ֑יִם וּבְנוֹת֙ אַנְשֵׁ֣י הָעִ֔יר יֹצְאֹ֖ת לִשְׁאֹ֥ב מָֽיִם׃
24:13 Here I stand by the spring as the daughters of the townsmen come out to draw water;
24:13 Behold, I stand by the fountain of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water.
כ"ד:י"ג הָא אֲנָא קָאֵם עַל עֵינָא דְמַיָּא וּבְנַת אֱנָשֵׁי קַרְתָּא נַפְקַן לְמִמְלֵי מַיָא:
כ"ד:י"ד וְהָיָ֣ה הַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֹמַ֤ר אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ הַטִּי־נָ֤א כַדֵּךְ֙ וְאֶשְׁתֶּ֔ה וְאָמְרָ֣ה שְׁתֵ֔ה וְגַם־גְּמַלֶּ֖יךָ אַשְׁקֶ֑ה אֹתָ֤הּ הֹכַ֙חְתָּ֙ לְעַבְדְּךָ֣ לְיִצְחָ֔ק וּבָ֣הּ אֵדַ֔ע כִּי־עָשִׂ֥יתָ חֶ֖סֶד עִם־אֲדֹנִֽי׃
24:14 let the maiden to whom I say, ‘Please, lower your jar that I may drink,’ and who replies, ‘Drink, and I will also water your camels’—let her be the one whom You have decreed for Your servant Isaac. Thereby shall I know that You have dealt graciously with my master.”
24:14 So let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say: Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say: Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also; let the same be she that Thou hast appointed for Thy servant, even for Isaac; and thereby shall I know that Thou hast shown kindness unto my master.’
כ"ד:י"ד וּתְהֵי עוּלֶמְתָּא דְּאֵימַר לַהּ אַרְכִינִי כְעַן קוּלְתִיךְ וְאֶשְׁתִּי וְתֵימַר אֵשְׁתְּ וְאַף גַּמְלָךְ אַשְׁקֵי יָתַהּ זַמִּנְתָּא לְעַבְדָךְ לְיִצְחָק וּבַהּ אִידַע אֲרֵי עֲבַדְתָּ טִיבוּ עִם רִבּוֹנִי:
כ"ד:ט"ו וַֽיְהִי־ה֗וּא טֶרֶם֮ כִּלָּ֣ה לְדַבֵּר֒ וְהִנֵּ֧ה רִבְקָ֣ה יֹצֵ֗את אֲשֶׁ֤ר יֻלְּדָה֙ לִבְתוּאֵ֣ל בֶּן־מִלְכָּ֔ה אֵ֥שֶׁת נָח֖וֹר אֲחִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֑ם וְכַדָּ֖הּ עַל־שִׁכְמָֽהּ׃
24:15 He had scarcely finished speaking, when Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor, came out with her jar on her shoulder.
24:15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
כ"ד:ט"ו וַהֲוָה הוּא עַד לָא שֵׁיצֵי לְמַלָּלָא וְהָא רִבְקָה נְפָקַת דְּאִתְיְלִידַת לִבְתוּאֵל בַּר מִלְכָּה אִתַּת נָחוֹר אֲחוּהִי דְאַבְרָהָם וְקוּלְתַהּ עַל כַּתְפַּהּ:

1טֶרֶם כִּלָּה לְדַבֵּר. פֵּרוּשׁ: בְּעוֹדוֹ אוֹמֵר ״עִם אֲדוֹנִי״ וְהִנֵּה רִבְקָה, וְהוּא פֶּרֶק בָּא סִימָן כִּי הִיא זֹאת שֶׁרְאוּיָה לִהְיוֹת עִם אֲדוֹנוֹ.
טרם כלה לדנר, Before he had finished speaking, etc. This means that Eliezer was still addressing G'd when Rebeccah materialised. He realised immediately that she was slated to become Isaac's wife.
2רִבְקָה יוֹצֵאת. פֵּירוּשׁ: מְסֻבֶּבֶת יְצִיאָה מֵהַזּוּלַת לְצַד תְּפִלַּת אֱלִיעֶזֶר. עָשָׂה ה׳ שֶׁתֵּצֵא בְּאוֹתוֹ רֶגַע, לֹא קוֹדֶם וְלֹא אַחַר, כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יִכָּשֵׁל בְּאִשָּׁה אַחֶרֶת, כִּי הִיא זֹאת אֲשֶׁר יֻלְּדָה לִבְתוּאֵל וְגוֹ׳, הִיא בַּת זוּגוֹ שֶׁל יִצְחָק, וּכְמוֹ שֶׁפֵּרַשְׁתִּי בְּפָרָשַׁת וַיֵּרָא בְּפָסוּק (בראשית כב:כ) ״וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי וְגוֹ׳ וַיֻּגַּד לְאַבְרָהָם״ וְגוֹ׳:
רבקה יוצאת, Rebeccah was coming out. G'd timed her appearance to coincide exactly with Eliezer's prayer so that he would not meet another girl by mistake while Rebeccah, who had been born to Bethuel, was the intended mate for Isaac. I have explained this in connection with 22,20 where the Torah mentions that Abraham had received word of her birth.
כ"ד:ט"ז וְהַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ טֹבַ֤ת מַרְאֶה֙ מְאֹ֔ד בְּתוּלָ֕ה וְאִ֖ישׁ לֹ֣א יְדָעָ֑הּ וַתֵּ֣רֶד הָעַ֔יְנָה וַתְּמַלֵּ֥א כַדָּ֖הּ וַתָּֽעַל׃
24:16 The maiden was very beautiful, a virgin whom no man had known. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up.
24:16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her; and she went down to the fountain, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
כ"ד:ט"ז וְעוּלֶמְתָּא שַׁפִּירַת חֵיזוּ (נ"י שַׁפִּירָא לְמֶחֱזֵי) לַחֲדָא בְּתֻלְתָּא וּגְבַר לָא יַדְעָהּ וּנְחָתַת לְעֵינָא וּמְלַת קוּלְתַהּ וּסְלֵקָת:
כ"ד:י"ז וַיָּ֥רָץ הָעֶ֖בֶד לִקְרָאתָ֑הּ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הַגְמִיאִ֥ינִי נָ֛א מְעַט־מַ֖יִם מִכַּדֵּֽךְ׃
24:17 The servant ran toward her and said, “Please, let me sip a little water from your jar.”
24:17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said: ‘Give me to drink, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher.’
כ"ד:י"ז וּרְהַט עַבְדָא לִקְדָמוּתַהּ וַאֲמַר אַשְׁקִינִי (ס"א אַטְעֵמְנִי) כְעַן זְעֵיר מַיָּא מִקּוּלְתִיךְ:

1הַגְמִיאִינִי נָא וְגוֹ׳. הִנֵּה הִמְעִיט מִמַּה שֶׁהִתְנָה לִשְׁאוֹל, כִּי הוּא אָמַר אוֹמַר אֵלֶיהָ הַטִּי נָא כַדֵּךְ וְאֶשְׁתֶּה, וְעַתָּה אָמַר הַגְמִיאִינִי פֵּירוּשׁ לְשׁוֹן גְּמִיעָה, גַּם אָמַר מְעַט, גַּם לֹא אָמַר שֶׁתַּטֶּה הִיא כַדָּהּ לְהַשְׁקוֹתוֹ כַּאֲשֶׁר הִתְנָה. טַעְמוֹ הוּא עַל פִּי דִּבְרֵיהֶם זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (בראשית רבה פ:ס) שֶׁרָאָה שֶׁעָלוּ הַמַּיִם לִקְרָאתָהּ, וְסִימָן זֶה הוּא מוּבְהָק שֶׁאֵינוֹ מָצוּי בִּבְנוֹת הַכְּנַעֲנִי כִּי אִם בְּזֶרַע בָּרוּךְ וְקָדוֹשׁ כְּאַבְרָהָם, גַּם מַזָּלוֹ הֶרְאָהוּ כִּי הִיא זֹאת, לָזֶה הָיָה יָרֵא עַל הַתְּנָאִים שֶׁהִתְנָה שֶׁמָּא לֹא תְּקַיֵּים אוֹתָם וְנִמְצָא הוּא מַפְסִיד מְבֻקָּשׁוֹ עַל יְדֵי תְּנָאוֹ, לָזֶה הָיָה מְמַעֵט בְּכָל הָאֶפְשָׁרִיּוּת בִּתְנָאָיו כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיֶה נָקֵל בְּעֵינֶיהָ לַעֲשׂוֹתָם.
הגמיאיני נא מעט מים, "let me please sip a little water, etc." Eliezer actually asked for less than he had originally stipulated, seeing he meant to ask her "to incline her jug in order to let him drink (extensively)." Not only did he only ask to take a sip, but he stressed that he wanted only a little water. He also failed to ask her to incline her jug in order to give him to drink. Our sages (Bereshit Rabbah 60,5) explain that Eliezer saw that the waters rose towards Rebeccah. This is when he realised that she was not a Canaanite girl and that she was destined for Isaac. He became afraid that he might forfeit an opportunity by insisting on the conditions he had made in his prayer, and proceeded to ask for the minimum possible. He wanted to make it easy for the girl to meet his request.
כ"ד:י"ח וַתֹּ֖אמֶר שְׁתֵ֣ה אֲדֹנִ֑י וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר וַתֹּ֧רֶד כַּדָּ֛הּ עַל־יָדָ֖הּ וַתַּשְׁקֵֽהוּ׃
24:18 “Drink, my lord,” she said, and she quickly lowered her jar upon her hand and let him drink.
24:18 And she said: ‘Drink, my lord’; and she hastened, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
כ"ד:י"ח וַאֲמֶרֶת אֵשְׁתְּ רִבּוֹנִי וְאוֹחִיאַת וַאֲחֵיתַת קוּלְתַהּ עַל יְדַהּ וְאַשְׁקְתֵיהּ:

1וַתֹּאמֶר שְׁתֵה וגו׳. פֵּירוּשׁ: כְּנֶגֶד שֶׁאָמַרְתָּ גְּמִיאָה מְעַט – שְׁתֵה כְּחֶפְצְךָ. וְלֹא שֶׁיִּשְׁתֶּה הוּא בְּיָדוֹ, אֶלָּא הִיא תִּטְרַח בַּמִּצְוָה לְהַשְׁקוֹת צָמֵא לַמַּיִם. ״וַתְּמַהֵר וַתּוֹרֶד כַּדָּהּ עַל יָדָהּ״ כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יִטְרַח הוּא בִּשְׂאֵת הַכַּד לִשְׁתּוֹת. וְאָמְרוֹ וַתַּשְׁקֵהוּ פֵּירוּשׁ: מִלְּבַד שֶׁלֹּא טָרַח לָשֵׂאת הַכַּד, עוֹד לָהּ שֶׁהָיְתָה טוֹרַחַת לְקָרֵב לְפִיו הַמַּיִם שֶׁלֹּא יִצְטָרֵךְ הוּא אֲפִלּוּ לְהַטּוֹת הַכְּלִי.
ותאמר שתה אדוני, She said: "drink my lord, etc." Instead of letting Eliezer merely sip a little water, the girl offered that he drink freely, as much as he wanted. She did not want him to have to use his hand to drink out of, but she lowered the jug to make it more convenient for him. The word ותשקהו, means that not only did Eliezer not have to lift the jug to his lips but she placed it so that he did not even have to tilt it. She brought the jug to the level of his mouth.
2וְטַעַם שֶׁלֹּא אָמְרָה תֵּכֶף וּמִיָּד ״גַּם לִגְמַלֶּיךָ״ וְגוֹ׳ – לְתוֹסֶפֶת וַתְרָנוּת נִתְכַּוְּנָה הַצַּדֶּקֶת, שֶׁאִם הָיְתָה מַקְדֶּמֶת לוֹמַר ״גַּם לִגְמַלֶּיךָ״ וְגוֹ׳ קוֹדֶם שֶׁיִּשְׁתֶּה הוּא, יֵשׁ מָקוֹם לוֹ לְמַהֵר לְהָקֵל טָרְחָהּ כֵּיוָן שֶׁעוֹד לָהּ טִרְחַת הַגְּמַלִּים, מַה שֶׁאֵין כֵּן קוֹדֶם שֶׁתּוֹדִיעֵהוּ יַחְשׁוֹב כִּי הוּא זֶה כָּל הַטּוֹרַח וְיִשְׁתֶּה כְּחֶפְצוֹ לְאַט לְאַט, וְאַחַר שֶׁשָּׁתָה תֵּכֶף אָמְרָה ״גַּם לִגְמַלֶּיךָ״ וְגוֹ׳.
Rebeccah purposely did not add the words: "I will also water your camels" immediately. Had she added the words immediately, before Eliezer had finished drinking, the latter might have cut short his own drinking knowing that Rebeccah would still have to go to the trouble of watering the camels. As long as she had not offered this, Eliezer had no reason to entertain such considerations.
כ"ד:י"ט וַתְּכַ֖ל לְהַשְׁקֹת֑וֹ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר גַּ֤ם לִגְמַלֶּ֙יךָ֙ אֶשְׁאָ֔ב עַ֥ד אִם־כִּלּ֖וּ לִשְׁתֹּֽת׃
24:19 When she had let him drink his fill, she said, “I will also draw for your camels, until they finish drinking.”
24:19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said: ‘I will draw for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.’

1וַתְּכַל לְהַשְׁקוֹתוֹ. הָיָה צָרִיךְ לוֹמַר ״וַיְכַל לִשְׁתּוֹת״, נִתְכַּוֵּן לוֹמַר שֶׁהָיְתָה הִיא מְקָרֶבֶת לוֹ הַמַּיִם לִשְׁתּוֹת עַד סוֹף הַשְּׁתִיָּה, וְלֹא הָיָה צָרִיךְ הוּא לִטְרוֹחַ בְּהַטָּיַת מַיִם אֵלָיו.
ותכל להשקותו, When she completed giving him to drink, etc. Seeing that the Torah does not describe Eliezer as having finished drinking, it is clear the Torah wants us to know that she kept bringing him water until he stopped drinking.
2עוֹד אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁחָשְׁשָׁה עָלָיו לְצַד שֶׁהָיָה עָיֵף בַּדֶּרֶךְ, וְהַפְלָגַת הַשְּׁתִיָּה תַּזִּיק, וְהִיא הַצַּדֶּקֶת שִׁעֲרָה בְּדַעְתָּהּ שִׁעוּר שֶׁיַּסְפִּיק לִשְׁתִיָּתוֹ, וְלֹא רָצְתָה לְהוֹסִיף לוֹ לְבַל יִסְתַּכֵּן, כִּי הֶעָיֵף לֹא יְשַׁעֵר בִּשְׁתִיָּתוֹ בְּעֵת צִמְאוֹנוֹ. וּכְדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יַחְשׁוֹב כִּי לְצַד הַמְעָטַת הַטּוֹרַח נִתְכַּוְּנָה לָזֶה, אָמְרָה אֵלָיו גַּם לִגְמַלֶּיךָ וְגוֹ׳ עַד אִם כִּלּוּ, וְלֹא אֶתְנַהֵג עִמָּהֶם בְּהַשְׁעָרַת הַהִסְתַּפְּקוּת. הָא לָמַדְתָּ כִּי לְצַד רַחְמָנוּת וְאַהֲבָה נִתְכַּוְּנָה אֵלָיו כַּטַּעַם הַנִּזְכָּר.
It is also possible that Rebeccah judged when Eliezer should stop drinking, seeing that weary travellers who have gone without water for a long time are not the best judges of when they may be drinking more than is good for their health.
3עוֹד יִתְבָּאֵר עַל דֶּרֶךְ אָמְרָם זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (ברכות מ.) בְּפָסוּק (דברים יא:טו) ״וְנָתַתִּי עֵשֶׂב בְּשָׂדְךָ לִבְהֶמְתְּךָ״ וְגוֹ׳, שֶׁצָּרִיךְ אָדָם לְהַקְדִּים לָתֵת מָזוֹן לִבְהֶמְתּוֹ וְאַחַר כָּךְ אֶת עַצְמוֹ. וְיֵשׁ לְךָ לָדַעַת כִּי דַּוְקָא דְּאֵין כָּאן סַכָּנָה אוֹ צַעַר, אֲבָל בְּסַכָּנָה אוֹ בְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ צַעַר, קוֹדֶם יֵשׁ לָחוּשׁ לְצַעֲרוֹ וְאַחַר כָּךְ בְּהֶמְתּוֹ. וְלָזֶה כְּשֶׁשָּׁאַל הָאִישׁ ״הַגְמִיאִינִי מְעַט״, הִרְגִּישָׁה הַצַּדֶּקֶת כִּי צָמֵא לַמַּיִם הָיָה וּמִצְטַעֵר הָיָה, לָזֶה אָמְרָה לוֹ ״שְׁתֵה״. וּכְשֶׁנָּתְנָה לוֹ שִׁעוּר שֶׁשִּׁעֲרָה כִּי וַדַּאי אֵין כָּאן חֲשַׁשׁ לְצַעַר הַצָּמָא, ״וַתְּכַל לְהַשְׁקֹתוֹ וַתֹּאמֶר גַּם לִגְמַלֶּיךָ אֶשְׁאָב״, כִּי בְּגֶדֶר זֶה שֶׁאֵינְךָ מִצְטַעֵר אוֹתָם צָרִיךְ לְהַקְדִּים. וְהוּא שֶׁסָּמַךְ הַכָּתוּב לְ״וַתְּכַל לְהַשְׁקֹתוֹ״ ״וַתֹּאמֶר גַּם לִגְמַלֶּיךָ״ וְגוֹ׳. וְאָמְרוֹ עַד אִם כִּלּוּ, פֵּרוּשׁ: לֹא אֲשַׁעֵר לָהֶם כְּפִי הָאוּמְדְּנָא, אֶלָּא אַשְׁקֶה וְלֹא אֶשָּׂא יָדִי עַד שֶׁאֶרְאֶה שֶׁמַּיִם לִפְנֵיהֶם וְאֵינָם שׁוֹתִים, וְזֶה לְךָ הָאוֹת כִּי כִּלּוּ לִשְׁתּוֹת.
We may view the matter also in light of what the Talmud teaches in Berachot 40, based on Deuteronomy 11,15 that one must feed one's animals before eating oneself. This ruling applies only when there is no danger to the life of the person involved. If his life is in danger, concern for his own health takes precedence over the wellbeing of his animals. When Rebeccah heard Eliezer ask for some water she concluded that she faced a man whose need for water was immediate. This is why she said to him: "drink!" As soon as she had given him sufficient water to ensure he was not in danger of dehydrating she suggested giving water to his camels, the ones which normally should have been looked after first. This is why the Torah phrases Rebeccah's action in such a way that we understand that as soon as was practicable she turned her attention to the camels, giving them to drink. She added that she would continue until the camels had finished drinking, meaning that in the case of the camels she was not going to rely on her personal judgment of when the animals had had enough to drink. She kept drawing water for the camels until they stopped drinking.
כ"ד:כ׳ וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר וַתְּעַ֤ר כַּדָּהּ֙ אֶל־הַשֹּׁ֔קֶת וַתָּ֥רָץ ע֛וֹד אֶֽל־הַבְּאֵ֖ר לִשְׁאֹ֑ב וַתִּשְׁאַ֖ב לְכָל־גְּמַלָּֽיו׃
24:20 Quickly emptying her jar into the trough, she ran back to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels.
24:20 And she hastened, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw, and drew for all his camels.
כ"ד:כ׳ וְאוֹחִיאַת וּנְפָצַת קוּלְתַהּ לְבֵית שַׁקְיָא וּרְהָטַת עוֹד לְבֵירָא לְמִמְלֵי וּמְלַת לְכָל גַּמְלוֹהִי:
כ"ד:כ"א וְהָאִ֥ישׁ מִשְׁתָּאֵ֖ה לָ֑הּ מַחֲרִ֕ישׁ לָדַ֗עַת הַֽהִצְלִ֧יחַ יְהוָ֛ה דַּרְכּ֖וֹ אִם־לֹֽא׃
24:21 The man, meanwhile, stood gazing at her, silently wondering whether the LORD had made his errand successful or not.
24:21 And the man looked stedfastly on her; holding his peace, to know whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.
כ"ד:כ"א וְגַבְרָא שָׁהֵי בַהּ מִסְתַּכֵּל שָׁתִיק לְמֵידַע הַאַצְלַח יְיָ אָרְחֵיהּ אִם לָא:

1וְהָאִישׁ מִשְׁתָּאֵה לָהּ מַחֲרִישׁ. פֵּרוּשׁ: לֶהֱיוֹת שֶׁרָאָה הַצְלָחַת דַּרְכּוֹ, וְיוֹתֵר מִמַּה שֶׁאָמַר בִּתְנָאוֹ אָמְרָה הַצַּדֶּקֶת, הָיְתָה נַפְשׁוֹ מְקַשְׁקֶשֶׁת לוֹמַר אֵלֶיהָ מַה שֶׁאָמַר בְּסָמוּךְ, כִּי כְּבָר נִשְׁלַם תְּנַאי שֶׁאָמַר ״וְאָמְרָה וְגַם לִגְמַלֶּיךָ אֶשְׁאָב״ (בראשית כד:מד). הִנֵּה הִיא אָמְרָה ״וְגַם״ וְגוֹ׳, וְקִיְּמָה דְּבָרֶיהָ דִּכְתִיב (בראשית כד:כ) ״וַתִּשְׁאַב לְכָל גְּמַלָּיו״, וְלֹא הָיָה צָרִיךְ לְהַמְתִּין עַד שֶׁיְּכַלּוּ הַגְּמַלִּים לִשְׁתּוֹת שֶׁלֹּא הָיָה זֶה מֵהַתְּנַאי. וְהָיָה מַשְׁתִּיק עַצְמוֹ מִדַּבֵּר עַד שֶׁיֵּדַע מַה שֶׁאָמְרָה לְהַשְׁקוֹת גְּמַלָּיו עַד שֶׁיְּכַלּוּ לִשְׁתּוֹת, וַהֲגַם שֶׁאֵין דָּבָר זֶה מֵהַתְּנַאי, לְצַד דְּבָרֶיהָ נוֹלַד לוֹ בָּהּ סָפֵק שֶׁמָּא הִיא מֵהָאוֹמְרִים הַרְבֵּה וְעוֹשִׂים מְעַט, עַד שֶׁרָאָה שֶׁכִּלּוּ הַגְּמַלִּים וְגוֹ׳, תֵּכֶף נָתַן הַצְּמִידִים וְגוֹ׳.
והאיש משתאה לה מחריש, And the man was amazed at her, remaining silent, etc. The Torah explains here that though Eliezer had no longer any reason to await Rebeccah's completing her task of watering the camels seeing she had already done much more than he had stipulated in his prayer, he kept his peace. One of the reasons he waited before enquiring from her about who she was may have been that he wanted to test whether she would indeed complete the onerous task of drawing water for all the ten camels as she had promised to do, or if she would tire in the process and carry out less than she had promised. As soon as she completed watering all the camels he gave her the jewelry intended for Isaac's bride.
כ"ד:כ"ב וַיְהִ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר כִּלּ֤וּ הַגְּמַלִּים֙ לִשְׁתּ֔וֹת וַיִּקַּ֤ח הָאִישׁ֙ נֶ֣זֶם זָהָ֔ב בֶּ֖קַע מִשְׁקָל֑וֹ וּשְׁנֵ֤י צְמִידִים֙ עַל־יָדֶ֔יהָ עֲשָׂרָ֥ה זָהָ֖ב מִשְׁקָלָֽם׃
24:22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold nose-ring weighing a half-shekel,bHeb. beqa‘. and two gold bands for her arms, ten shekels in weight.
24:22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden ring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;

1עַל יָדֶיהָ. פֵּירוּשׁ שֶׁהֲלָמוּהָ כְּאִלּוּ נַעֲשׂוּ כְּשִׁיעוּר זֶה, וְעָשָׂה הַדָּבָר לְצַד הַצְדִּיקוֹ בְּהַשְׁגָּחַת ה׳ עָלָיו וְסִימָנִים הַמַּצְדִּיקִים שֶׁרָאוּ עֵינָיו.
על ידיה, on her hands. This means that the bracelets fitted her as if made to fit her specific measurements. Eliezer placed this jewelry on Rebeccah's hands as a sign of acknowledging G'd's personal guidance in his mission thus far.
כ"ד:כ"ג וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ בַּת־מִ֣י אַ֔תְּ הַגִּ֥ידִי נָ֖א לִ֑י הֲיֵ֧שׁ בֵּית־אָבִ֛יךְ מָק֥וֹם לָ֖נוּ לָלִֽין׃
24:23 “Pray tell me,” he said, “whose daughter are you? Is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”
24:23 and said: ‘Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee. Is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in?’
כ"ד:כ"ג וַאֲמַר בַּת מָן אַתְּ חַוִּי כְעַן לִי הַאִית בֵּית אָבוּךְ אָתַר כָּשַׁר לָנָא לִמְבָת:

1בַּת מִי אַתְּ הַגִּידִי וְגוֹ׳. סָמַךְ שְׁתֵּי הַשְּׁאֵלוֹת, לְהַגִּיד כִּי לֹא נִסְתַּפֵּק אִם הִיא מִבְּנֵי מִשְׁפַּחַת אַבְרָהָם, שֶׁאִם הָיָה מְסֻפָּק לֹא הָיָה לוֹ לִשְׁאוֹל הֲיֵשׁ מָקוֹם עַד שֶׁיֵּדַע אִם דֶּרֶךְ נָכוֹן לְפָנָיו, אֶלָּא וַדַּאי שֶׁהֶאֱמִין בַּה׳ כִּי הִצְלִיחַ דַּרְכּוֹ, וּמַה שֶׁשָּׁאַל ״בַּת מִי אַתְּ״ הוּא מָה שֵׁם אָבִיהָ וְגוֹ׳, וְקוֹדֶם שֶׁתָּשִׁיב אָמַר ״הֲיֵשׁ בֵּית אָבִיךְ״ וְגוֹ׳ כִּי לֹא יִשְׁתַּנֶּה דָּבָר זֶה בְּהַגָּדַת בַּת מִי וְגוֹ׳, וְהָבֵן:
בת מי את, הגידי, "Whose daughter are you? Tell me, etc." The Torah lumps both these questions together to show that Eliezer did not entertain any doubts that the girl must belong to Abraham's family. Had he entertained such doubts he could not have enquired immediately about the chance of lodging in her parents' home until he had clarified who her parents were. He merely wanted to know her father's name. He added his enquiry about staying at her parents' overnight to emphasise that this had nothing to do with her father's name, that he was convinced G'd had guided him to the right family.
כ"ד:כ"ד וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו בַּת־בְּתוּאֵ֖ל אָנֹ֑כִי בֶּן־מִלְכָּ֕ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָלְדָ֖ה לְנָחֽוֹר׃
24:24 She replied, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.”
24:24 And she said unto him: ‘I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore unto Nahor.’

1בַּת בְּתוּאֵל אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה וְגוֹ׳. פֵּירוּשׁ שֶׁאָבִיהָ מִבְּנֵי הַגְּבִירָה וְלֹא מִפִּילֶגֶשׁ.
בת בתואל..אשר ילדה לנחור. The daughter of Bethuel whom Milkah bore for Nachor. Rebeccah emphasised that she was not the daughter or granddaughter of a concubine, but of the ranking wife.
כ"ד:כ"ה וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו גַּם־תֶּ֥בֶן גַּם־מִסְפּ֖וֹא רַ֣ב עִמָּ֑נוּ גַּם־מָק֖וֹם לָלֽוּן׃
24:25 And she went on, “There is plenty of strawcHeb. teben, shredded straw, which in the East is mixed with feed; cf. v. 32. and feed at home, and also room to spend the night.”
24:25 She said moreover unto him: ‘We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.’
כ"ד:כ"ה וַאֲמֶרֶת לֵיהּ אַף תִּבְנָא אַף כִּסָּתָא סַגִּי עִמָּנָא אַף אָתַר כָּשַׁר לִמְבָת:

24:26 The man bowed low in homage to the LORD
24:26 And the man bowed his head, and prostrated himself before the LORD.
