וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע מֹשֶׁ֖ה לְק֣וֹל חֹתְנ֑וֹ וַיַּ֕עַשׂ כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָמָֽר׃
18:24
Moses heeded his father-in-law and did just as he had said.

So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

וְקַבִּיל משֶׁה לְמֵימְרָא דַחֲמוּהִי וַעֲבַד כֹּל דִי אֲמָר:

וַיִּבְחַ֨ר מֹשֶׁ֤ה אַנְשֵׁי־חַ֙יִל֙ מִכָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתָ֛ם רָאשִׁ֖ים עַל־הָעָ֑ם שָׂרֵ֤י אֲלָפִים֙ שָׂרֵ֣י מֵא֔וֹת שָׂרֵ֥י חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים וְשָׂרֵ֥י עֲשָׂרֹֽת׃

Moses chose capable men out of all Israel, and appointed them heads over the people—chiefs of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens;

And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

וּבְחַר משֶׁה גֻבְרִין דְחֵילָא מִכָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וּמַנִי יָתְהוֹן רֵישִׁין עַל עַמָא רַבָּנֵי אַלְפִין רַבָּנֵי מָאוָתָא רַבָּנֵי חַמְשִׁין וְרַבָּנֵי עִשׂוֹרְיָתָא:

וְשָׁפְט֥וּ אֶת־הָעָ֖ם בְּכָל־עֵ֑ת אֶת־הַדָּבָ֤ר הַקָּשֶׁה֙ יְבִיא֣וּן אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה וְכָל־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַקָּטֹ֖ן יִשְׁפּוּט֥וּ הֵֽם׃
18:26
and they judged the people at all times: the difficult matters they would bring to Moses, and all the minor matters they would decide themselves.

And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

וְדַיְנִין יָת עַמָא בְּכָל עִדָן יָת פִּתְגַם קָשֵׁי מַיְתִין לְוָת משֶׁה וְכָל פִּתְגַם זְעֵיר דָיְנִין אִנוּן:
ושפטו. וְדָיְנִין יָת עַמָּא:
יביאון. מָיְתִין:
ישפוטו הם. כְּמוֹ יִשְׁפְּטוּ, וְכֵן "לֹא תַעֲבוּרִי" (רות ב'), כְּמוֹ לֹא תַעַבְרִי, וְתַרְגּוּמוֹ דָּיְנִין אִינּוּן; מִקְרָאוֹת הָעֶלְיוֹנִים הֵם לְשׁוֹן צִוּוּי, לְכָךְ מְתֻרְגָּמִין וִידוּנוּן, יַיְתוּן, יְדוּנוּן, וּמִקְרָאוֹת הַלָּלוּ לְשׁוֹן עֲשִׂיָּה:

וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶת־חֹתְנ֑וֹ וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ ל֖וֹ אֶל־אַרְצֽוֹ׃ (פ)
18:27
Then Moses bade his father-in-law farewell, and he went his way to his own land.

And Moses let his father-in-law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

וְשַׁלַח משֶׁה יָת חֲמוּהִי וַאֲזַל לֵהּ לְאַרְעֵהּ:
וילך לו אל ארצו. לְגַיֵּר בְּנֵי מִשְׁפַּחְתּוֹ (מכילתא):
