Exodus 35:30–36:7
ל"ה:ל׳ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל רְא֛וּ קָרָ֥א יְהוָ֖ה בְּשֵׁ֑ם בְּצַלְאֵ֛ל בֶּן־אוּרִ֥י בֶן־ח֖וּר לְמַטֵּ֥ה יְהוּדָֽה׃
35:30 And Moses said to the Israelites: See, the LORD has singled out by name Bezalel, son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.
35:30 And Moses said unto the children of Israel: ‘See, the LORD hath called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.

ל"ה:ל"א וַיְמַלֵּ֥א אֹת֖וֹ ר֣וּחַ אֱלֹהִ֑ים בְּחָכְמָ֛ה בִּתְבוּנָ֥ה וּבְדַ֖עַת וּבְכָל־מְלָאכָֽה׃
35:31 He has endowed him with a divine spirit of skill, ability, and knowledge in every kind of craft
35:31 And He hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.
ל"ה:ל"א וְאַשְׁלֵם עִמֵּיהּ רוּחַ נְבוּאָה מִן קֳדָם יְיָ בְּחָכְמְתָא בְּסוּכְלְתָנוּ וּבְמַדַּע וּבְכָל עִבִידָא:
ל"ה:ל"ב וְלַחְשֹׁ֖ב מַֽחַשָׁבֹ֑ת לַעֲשֹׂ֛ת בַּזָּהָ֥ב וּבַכֶּ֖סֶף וּבַנְּחֹֽשֶׁת׃
35:32 and cMoved up from v. 34 for clarity.has inspired him-c to make designs for work in gold, silver, and copper,
35:32 And to devise skilful works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,

35:33 to cut stones for setting and to carve wood—to work in every kind of designer’s craft—
35:33 and in cutting of stones for setting, and in carving of wood, to work in all manner of skilful workmanship.

35:34 and to give directions. He and Oholiab son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan
35:34 And He hath put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.

1וּלְהוֹרֹת נָתַן וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, לְצַד שֶׁיֵּשׁ חֲכָמִים רַבִּים שֶׁתִּהְיֶה חָכְמָתָם בְּלִבָּם לְבַד שֶׁלֹּא יֵדְעוּ לְלַמְּדָהּ, לָזֶה אָמַר וּלְהוֹרֹת נָתַן בְּלִבּוֹ הִשְׂכִּיל חָכְמַת הַלִּמּוּד. עוֹד בָּא לִשְׁלֹל מַה שֶׁכָּתוּב בְּיוֹמָא לח,א שֶׁל בֵּית גַּרְמוּ לֹא רָצוּ לְלַמֵּד עַל מַעֲשֵׂה לֶחֶם הַפָּנִים, שֶׁל בֵּית אַבְטִינָס לֹא רָצוּ וְכוּ׳, וְהוֹדִיעָנוּ הַכָּתוּב כִּי עַל אֵלּוּ יֵאָמֵר (משלי י:ז) ״זֵכֶר צַדִּיק לִבְרָכָה״, כִּי הָיוּ מוֹרִים וּמְלַמְּדִים כָּל הָרוֹצֶה.
ולהורות נתן בלבו, and He equipped his heart with the ability to teach, etc. There are many great scholars whose wisdom is locked up in their hearts due to their inability to transmit it successfully to outsiders. The ability to teach is a great gift, and this is why the Torah testifies that G'd granted this gift to Betzalel. There is also a moral lesson contained in this verse not to act like certain members of the family of Bet Gormu who wanted to preserve their monoply on the intricacies of preparing the show breads by not teaching their craft to any non-family member. The Talmud severely critised their behaviour (Yuma 38). People who do teach their crafts qualify for the blessing expressed by Solomon in Proverbs 10,7: "The memory of a righteous person is a source of blessing."

35:35 have been endowed with the skill to do any work—of the carver, the designer, the embroiderer in blue, purple, crimson yarns, and in fine linen, and of the weaver—as workers in all crafts and as makers of designs.
35:35 Them hath He filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of workmanship, of the craftsman, and of the skilful workman, and of the weaver in colours, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any workmanship, and of those that devise skilful works.

ל"ו:א׳ וְעָשָׂה֩ בְצַלְאֵ֨ל וְאָהֳלִיאָ֜ב וְכֹ֣ל ׀ אִ֣ישׁ חֲכַם־לֵ֗ב אֲשֶׁר֩ נָתַ֨ן יְהוָ֜ה חָכְמָ֤ה וּתְבוּנָה֙ בָּהֵ֔מָּה לָדַ֣עַת לַעֲשֹׂ֔ת אֶֽת־כָּל־מְלֶ֖אכֶת עֲבֹדַ֣ת הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ לְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֖ה יְהוָֽה׃
36:1 Let, then, Bezalel and Oholiab and all the skilled persons whom the LORD has endowed with skill and ability to perform expertly all the tasks connected with the service of the sanctuary carry out all that the LORD has commanded.
36:1 And Bezalel and Oholiab shall work, and every wise-hearted man, in whom the LORD hath put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all the work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that the LORD hath commanded.’
ל"ו:א׳ וַעֲבַד בְּצַלְאֵל וְאָהֳלִיאָב וְכָל גְּבַר חַכִּים לִבָּא דִּיהַב יְיָ חָכְמָא וְסוּכְלְתָנוּתָא בְּהוֹן לְמִדַּע לְמֶעְבַּד יָת כָּל עִבִידַת פָּלְחַן קוּדְשָׁא לְכֹל דִּי פַּקֵּד יְיָ:

1וְעָשָׂה בְצַלְאֵל וְגוֹ׳ אֶת כָּל מְלֶאכֶת וְגוֹ׳. קָשֶׁה, וַהֲלֹא אֲפִלּוּ לְקִיחַת הַנְּדָבָה עֲדַיִן לֹא לָקַח לַעֲשׂוֹת, וְאֵיךְ יֻצְדַּק לוֹמַר וְעָשָׂה וְגוֹ׳? אָכֵן הַכַּוָּנָה הִיא שֶׁהֵכִין כְּלֵי אוּמָּנוּת הַצְּרִיכִין לַעֲשׂוֹת בָּהֶם כָּל פְּרָטֵי הַמְּלָאכָה אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה ה׳ לַעֲשׂוֹת, כִּי צְרִיכִין כַּמָּה פְּרָטֵי כְּלֵי אוּמָּנוּת. וְזֶה שִׁעוּר הַכָּתוּב: וְעָשָׂה בְצַלְאֵל וְגוֹ׳ אֶת כָּל מְלֶאכֶת, פֵּרוּשׁ, כֵּלִים שֶׁהֵם מְלֶאכֶת מַעֲשֵׂה עֲבוֹדַת הַקֹּדֶשׁ לְכֹל אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה ה׳, כִּי יֵשׁ עֲבוֹדַת הַמַּתָּכוֹת וַעֲבוֹדַת כְּלֵי עֵץ וַעֲבוֹדַת הָאֲבָנִים וְהָאֲרִיגָה. וְצֵא וּלְמַד מַה שֶׁאָמְרוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (שבת מט:) כִּי הַמ׳ מְלָאכוֹת כֻּלָּן הָיוּ בַּמִּקְדָּשׁ, וּמֵהַנִּשְׁמָע מֵהַכְּתוּבִים מוּבָן כִּי בְּיוֹם אֶחָד הֵכִינוּ כָּל כְּלֵי אוּמָּנוּת.
ועשה בצלאל, and Betzalel carried out all the work, etc. How could the Torah report Betzalel as performing the work when it had not yet informed us that Moses had handed over to him all the donations, and (until verse six in this chapter) the people were still in the process of bringing their various gifts? We are forced to conclude that what the Torah tells us in this verse is that Betzalel and his helpers made all the preparations necessary to carry out the work as soon as the materials would be at hand. He prepared the proper tools. The meaning of the words את כל מלאכת is that they made the tools needed for the work. Different tools are required to perform work on metal, wood, stones and fabrics respectively. We are told in Shabbat 49 that all the 39 categories of work which are prohibited on the Sabbath were performed in connection with the construction of the Holy Tabernacle. It appears from the wording of the Torah that all these tools were prepared on the same day.
ל"ו:ב׳ וַיִּקְרָ֣א מֹשֶׁ֗ה אֶל־בְּצַלְאֵ֘ל וְאֶל־אָֽהֳלִיאָב֒ וְאֶל֙ כָּל־אִ֣ישׁ חֲכַם־לֵ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֧ן יְהוָ֛ה חָכְמָ֖ה בְּלִבּ֑וֹ כֹּ֚ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר נְשָׂא֣וֹ לִבּ֔וֹ לְקָרְבָ֥ה אֶל־הַמְּלָאכָ֖ה לַעֲשֹׂ֥ת אֹתָֽהּ׃
36:2 Moses then called Bezalel and Oholiab, and every skilled person whom the LORD had endowed with skill, everyone who excelled in ability, to undertake the task and carry it out.
36:2 And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab, and every wise-hearted man, in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom, even every one whose heart stirred him up to come unto the work to do it.
ל"ו:ב׳ וּקְרָא משֶׁה לִבְצַלְאֵל וּלְאָהֳלִיאָב וּלְכָל גְּבַר חַכִּים לִבָּא דִּיהַב יְיָ חָכְמְתָא בְּלִבֵּיהּ כָּל דְּאִתְרְעֵי לִבֵּיהּ לְמִקְרַב לְעִבִדְתָּא לְמֶעְבַּד יָתֵיהּ:
ל"ו:ג׳ וַיִּקְח֞וּ מִלִּפְנֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֗ה אֵ֤ת כָּל־הַתְּרוּמָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֵבִ֜יאוּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל לִמְלֶ֛אכֶת עֲבֹדַ֥ת הַקֹּ֖דֶשׁ לַעֲשֹׂ֣ת אֹתָ֑הּ וְ֠הֵם הֵבִ֨יאוּ אֵלָ֥יו ע֛וֹד נְדָבָ֖ה בַּבֹּ֥קֶר בַּבֹּֽקֶר׃
36:3 They took over from Moses all the gifts that the Israelites had brought, to carry out the tasks connected with the service of the sanctuary. But when these continued to bring freewill offerings to him morning after morning,
36:3 And they received of Moses all the offering, which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, wherewith to make it. And they brought yet unto him freewill-offerings every morning.
ל"ו:ג׳ וּנְסִיבוּ מִן קֳדָם משֶׁה יָת כָּל אַפְרָשׁוּתָא דִּי אַיְתִיאוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְעִבִידַת פָּלְחַן קוּדְשָׁא לְמֶעְבַּד יָתַהּ וְאִנּוּן מַיְתַן לֵיהּ עוֹד נְדַבְתָּא בִּצְפַר בִּצְפָר:
ל"ו:ג׳ אור החיים
1וְהֵם הֵבִיאוּ אֵלָיו עוֹד וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, מִדְּבָרִים הַנַּעֲשֵׂת בָּהֶם מְלָאכָה, כְּמוֹ שֶׁתֹּאמַר מַטְוֶה שֶׁל תְּכֵלֶת וְגוֹ׳ וְשֶׁל עִזִּים וְכָל הַפְּרָטִים אֲשֶׁר תֵּעָשֶׂנָה בַּיָּדַיִם, וְזֶה סִבַּת עַכָּבָתָם שֶׁלֹּא הֵבִיאוּ עַד אַחַר יוֹם אוֹ יוֹמַיִם, כִּי עֲסוּקִים הָיוּ וּמְבִיאִים מְלַאכְתָּם יוֹם יוֹם, אֲבָל נִדְבַת מָמוֹן הַצְּרִיכָה כְּבָר הֵבִיאוּ בְּיוֹם רִאשׁוֹן בְּפַעַם אַחַת.
והם הביאו אליו עוד נדבה בבוקר בבוקר, and they kept bringing further donations to him morning after morning. This refers to the materials used in the Tabernacle such as fabrics which had been woven or spun out of blue wool, goats' hair, etc. All the items which could not be used in their original form were delivered in a condition that enabled them to be used forthwith. This is why it took several days for such donations to have been completed. Donations such as gold, silver, etc., were all delivered on the very first day.
ל"ו:ד׳ וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ כָּל־הַ֣חֲכָמִ֔ים הָעֹשִׂ֕ים אֵ֖ת כָּל־מְלֶ֣אכֶת הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ אִֽישׁ־אִ֥ישׁ מִמְּלַאכְתּ֖וֹ אֲשֶׁר־הֵ֥מָּה עֹשִֽׂים׃
36:4 all the artisans who were engaged in the tasks of the sanctuary came, each from the task upon which he was engaged,
36:4 And all the wise men, that wrought all the work of the sanctuary, came every man from his work which they wrought.
ל"ו:ד׳ וַאֲתוֹ כָּל חַכִּימַיָּא דְּעָבְדִין יָת כָּל עִבִידַת קוּדְשָׁא גְּבַר גְּבַר מֵעִבִדְתֵּיהּ דְּאִנּוּן עָבְדִין:
ל"ו:ה׳ וַיֹּאמְרוּ֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה לֵּאמֹ֔ר מַרְבִּ֥ים הָעָ֖ם לְהָבִ֑יא מִדֵּ֤י הָֽעֲבֹדָה֙ לַמְּלָאכָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה לַעֲשֹׂ֥ת אֹתָֽהּ׃
36:5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than is needed for the tasks entailed in the work that the LORD has commanded to be done.”
36:5 And they spoke unto Moses, saying: ‘The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work, which the LORD commanded to make.’
ל"ו:ה׳ וַאֲמָרוּ לְמשֶׁה לְמֵימַר מַסְגַּן עַמָּא לְאַיְתָאָה מִסַּת פָּלְחָנָא לְעִבִדְתָּא דְּפַקֵּד יְיָ לְמֶעְבַּד יָתַהּ:

1מַרְבִּים הָעָם לְהָבִיא. קָשֶׁה, וְכִי רַע הַדָּבָר שֶׁיִּהְיֶה בֵּית אֱלֹהֵינוּ בְּאוֹצְרוֹת זָהָב לְכָבוֹד וּלְתִפְאָרֶת? אָכֵן לֹא בָּאוּ לִקְבּוֹל עַל הַמּוּבָא בֵּית ה׳ מֵהַזָּהָב וְכֶסֶף וְגוֹ׳, אֶלָּא עַל הַמּוּבָא עָשׂוּי מְלָאכָה, שֶׁהוּא דָּבָר שֶׁאֵין צוֹרֶךְ בּוֹ גַּם עוֹמֵד לְהִתְקַלְקֵל, כָּל שֶׁיֵּשׁ דֵּי מַחְסוֹר, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ מַרְבִּים וְגוֹ׳ מִדֵּי הָעֲבוֹדָה לַמְּלָאכָה, פֵּרוּשׁ, מַרְבִּים לְהָבִיא יוֹתֵר מִשִּׁעוּר הָעֲבוֹדָה הַצְּרִיכָה לַמְּלָאכָה אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה ה׳. הָא לָמַדְתָּ שֶׁעַל פְּרָטֵי הָעֲבוֹדָה הִקְפִּידוּ. וְהָעֵד לִדְבָרֵינוּ מַאֲמַר הַכָּרוֹז אַל יַעֲשׂוּ עוֹד מְלָאכָה לִתְרוּמַת הַקֹּדֶשׁ, וְאָמְרוֹ וַיִּכָּלֵא הָעָם מֵהָבִיא וְלֹא אָמַר מֵעֲשׂוֹת, כִּי יֹאמַר הַכָּתוּב דָּבָר שֶׁהוּכַּר לַחֲכָמִים הָעוֹשִׂים בַּמְּלָאכָה וְהִיא הַהֲבָאָה.
מרבים העם להביא; the people were bringing too much. Why would it be such a bad thing for the Temple treasury to possess a good supply? We should not understand the artisans' comments as a complaint that too much raw material had been contributed; they complained that too much material such as fabrics already woven or embroidered had been brought. They were neither required nor likely to be safe against deterioration. This sentiment was expresseed in the words מרבים…מדי העבודה, more than could be put to use immediately. Further proof that our interpretation is correct may be seen in the proclamation to the people not to perform any more work designed to be used in the construction of the Sanctuary. Moses did not discourage donations of raw materials. When the Torah states that the people were prevented from bringing more materials and not from performing more work such as weaving fabrics, the reason is that Betzalel had no control over what people did within their tents.
ל"ו:ו׳ וַיְצַ֣ו מֹשֶׁ֗ה וַיַּעֲבִ֨ירוּ ק֥וֹל בַּֽמַּחֲנֶה֮ לֵאמֹר֒ אִ֣ישׁ וְאִשָּׁ֗ה אַל־יַעֲשׂוּ־ע֛וֹד מְלָאכָ֖ה לִתְרוּמַ֣ת הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ וַיִּכָּלֵ֥א הָעָ֖ם מֵהָבִֽיא׃
36:6 Moses thereupon had this proclamation made throughout the camp: “Let no man or woman make further effort toward gifts for the sanctuary!” So the people stopped bringing:
36:6 And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying: ‘Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary.’ So the people were restrained from bringing.
ל"ו:ו׳ וּפַקֵּד משֶׁה וְאַעֲבַרוּ כָרוֹזָא בְמַשְׁרִיתָא לְמֵימַר גְּבַר וְאִתְּתָא לָא יַעַבְדוּן עוֹד עִבִדְתָּא לְאַפְרָשׁוּת קוּדְשָׁא וּפְסַק עַמָּא מִלְּאַיְתָאָה:
ל"ו:ז׳ וְהַמְּלָאכָ֗ה הָיְתָ֥ה דַיָּ֛ם לְכָל־הַמְּלָאכָ֖ה לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת אֹתָ֑הּ וְהוֹתֵֽר׃ (ס)
36:7 their efforts had been more than enough for all the tasks to be done.
36:7 For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.
ל"ו:ז׳ וְעִבִדְתָּא הֲוַת מִסַּת לְכָל עִבִדְתָּא לְמֶעְבַּד יָתַהּ וִיתָרָת:

1דַּיָּם וְגוֹ׳ וְהוֹתֵר. הֵם שְׁנֵי דְּבָרִים הַפְכִּיִּים: אִם דַּיָּם אֵינוֹ הוֹתֵר, וְאִם הוֹתֵר אֵינוֹ דַּיָּם, וְכָאן אֵין מָקוֹם לוֹמַר ״לֹא זוֹ אַף זוֹ״ לְצַד שֶׁשְּׁנֵיהֶם סוּג אֶחָד וּבְחִינָה אַחַת, וְאֵין דֶּרֶךְ לַעֲשׂוֹת סוּג אֶחָד שְׁנֵי סוּגִים כִּי יֵשׁ בַּנִּשְׁמָע הַכְחָשָׁה. וְעוֹד, לֹא הָיָה צָרִיךְ לוֹמַר ״דַּיָּם״ אֶלָּא ״וְהַמְּלָאכָה הָיְתָה הוֹתֵר לְכָל הַמְּלָאכָה״. וְעוֹד, כָּל הַכָּתוּב מְיֻתָּר, שֶׁהֲרֵי אָמַר לְמַעְלָה ״מַרְבִּים הָעָם לְהָבִיא מִדֵּי הָעֲבוֹדָה לַמְּלָאכָה״, וּפְשִׁיטָא שֶׁלֹּא אָמְרוּ כֵן עַד שֶׁשִּׁעֲרוּ, וּמַה צֹרֶךְ עוֹד לוֹמַר ״וְהַמְּלָאכָה״ וְגוֹ׳?
דים…והותר, sufficient and too much. How could there be "too much" and "sufficient" at the same time? There seems to be something contradictory here. Why did the Torah have to mention that "the work was sufficient" at all? The Torah only needed to inform us that the requirements for the Holy Tabernacle were oversubscribed! Besides, the entire verse seems superfluous as we have already been told in verse five that the people brought more than was required and had to be restrained. Obviously, such a statement had to be based on the quantities having already been either counted, weighed or measured!
2וְאוּלַי שֶׁיַּשְׁמִיעֵנוּ הַכָּתוּב חִבַּת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּעֵינֵי הַמָּקוֹם, כִּי לְצַד שֶׁהֵבִיאוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל יוֹתֵר מִשִּׁעוּר הַצָּרִיךְ, חָשׁ ה׳ לִכְבוֹד כָּל אִישׁ שֶׁטָּרְחוּ וְהֵבִיאוּ, וְנִכְנַס כָּל הַמּוּבָא בֵּית ה׳ בִּמְלֶאכֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן. וְזֶה שִׁעוּר הַכָּתוּב וְהַמְּלָאכָה אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה ה׳ לַעֲשׂוֹת בַּמִּשְׁכָּן הִסְפִּיקָה לְהִכָּנֵס בְּתוֹכָהּ כָּל הַמְּלָאכָה שֶׁעָשׂוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, הֲגַם שֶׁהוֹתֵר, פֵּרוּשׁ שֶׁהָיָה יוֹתֵר מֵהַצָּרִיךְ, הִסְפִּיק הַמְּקַבֵּל לְקַבֵּל יוֹתֵר מִשִּׁעוּרוֹ עַל יְדֵי נֵס. אוֹ עַל זֶה הַדֶּרֶךְ וְהַמְּלָאכָה שֶׁהֵבִיאוּ הָיְתָה דַיָּם, לֹא חָסֵר וְלֹא יוֹתֵר, הֲגַם שֶׁהָיְתָה יוֹתֵר כְּפִי הָאֱמֶת, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ וְהוֹתֵר, כִּי נַעֲשָׂה נֵס וְלֹא הוֹתִיר.
Perhaps the Torah wished to tell us that G'd's fondness for the Jewish people increased as a result of the oversubscription of the materials needed for G'd's Sanctuary. As an act of recognition, G'd miraculously absorbed all these donations and they were used in the Tabernacle, i.e. דים, they were sufficient, none was rejected, i.e. remained unused. The word דים refers to המלאכה, the finished work was all used, though והותר, the raw material contained therein seemed quite excessive. There was a miracle which reconciled the paradox which the report of the Torah implies. Alternatively, the Torah means that the ready-made work which the people contributed appeared to be adequate, whereas in terms of the raw materials used it was actually excessive. It required a miracle for nothing to remain as "left-over."
