Genesis 14:21–15:6
י"ד:כ"א וַיֹּ֥אמֶר מֶֽלֶךְ־סְדֹ֖ם אֶל־אַבְרָ֑ם תֶּן־לִ֣י הַנֶּ֔פֶשׁ וְהָרְכֻ֖שׁ קַֽח־לָֽךְ׃
14:21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the possessions for yourself.”
14:21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram: ‘Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.’
י"ד:כ"א וַאֲמַר מַלְכָּא דִסְדוֹם לְאַבְרָם הַב לִי נַפְשָׁתָא וְקִנְיָנָא דְּבַר (נ"א סַב) לָךְ:
י"ד:כ"ב וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אַבְרָ֖ם אֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ סְדֹ֑ם הֲרִימֹ֨תִי יָדִ֤י אֶל־יְהוָה֙ אֵ֣ל עֶלְי֔וֹן קֹנֵ֖ה שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָֽרֶץ׃
14:22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I sweardLit. “lift up my hand.” to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth:
14:22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom: ‘I have lifted up my hand unto the LORD, God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth,
י"ד:כ"ב וַאֲמַר אַבְרָם לְמַלְכָּא דִסְדוֹם אֲרֵימִית יְדַי בִּצְלוֹ קֳדָם יְיָ קֳדָם אֵל עִלָּאָה דִּקִנְיָנֵיהּ שְׁמַיָּא וְאַרְעָא:
י"ד:כ"ג אִם־מִחוּט֙ וְעַ֣ד שְׂרֽוֹךְ־נַ֔עַל וְאִם־אֶקַּ֖ח מִכָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לָ֑ךְ וְלֹ֣א תֹאמַ֔ר אֲנִ֖י הֶעֱשַׁ֥רְתִּי אֶת־אַבְרָֽם׃
14:23 I will not take so much as a thread or a sandal strap of what is yours; you shall not say, ‘It is I who made Abram rich.’
14:23 that I will not take a thread nor a shoe-latchet nor aught that is thine, lest thou shouldest say: I have made Abram rich;
י"ד:כ"ג אִם מִחוּטָא וְעַד עַרְקַת מְסָנָא וְאִם אֶסַּב מִכָּל דִּי לָךְ וְלָא תֵימַר אֲנָא אַעְתָּרִית יָת אַבְרָם:
י"ד:כ"ד בִּלְעָדַ֗י רַ֚ק אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָֽכְל֣וּ הַנְּעָרִ֔ים וְחֵ֙לֶק֙ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָלְכ֖וּ אִתִּ֑י עָנֵר֙ אֶשְׁכֹּ֣ל וּמַמְרֵ֔א הֵ֖ם יִקְח֥וּ חֶלְקָֽם׃ (ס)
14:24 For me, nothing but what my servants have used up; as for the share of the men who went with me—Aner, Eshkol, and Mamre—let them take their share.”
14:24 save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre, let them take their portion.’
י"ד:כ"ד לְחוֹד (נ"א בַּר) מִדִּאֲכָלוּ עוּלֵמַיָּא וְחוּלַק גֻּבְרַיָּא דִּי אֲזָלוּ עִמִּי עָנֵר אֶשְׁכֹּל וּמַמְרֵא אִנּוּן יְקַבְּלוּן חֲלָקְהוֹן:
ט"ו:א׳ אַחַ֣ר ׀ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה הָיָ֤ה דְבַר־יְהוָה֙ אֶל־אַבְרָ֔ם בַּֽמַּחֲזֶ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר אַל־תִּירָ֣א אַבְרָ֗ם אָנֹכִי֙ מָגֵ֣ן לָ֔ךְ שְׂכָרְךָ֖ הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃
15:1 Some time later, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision. He said, “Fear not, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.”
15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying: ‘Fear not, Abram, I am thy shield, thy reward shall be exceeding great.’
ט"ו:א׳ בָּתַר פִּתְגָּמַיָּא הָאִלֵּין הֲוָה פִּתְגָּמָא דַיְיָ עִם אַבְרָם בִּנְבוּאָה לְמֵימָר לָא תִדְחַל אַבְרָם מֵימְרִי תְּקוֹף לָךְ אַגְרָךְ סַגִּי לַחֲדָא:
ט"ו:ב׳ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אַבְרָ֗ם אֲדֹנָ֤י יֱהוִה֙ מַה־תִּתֶּן־לִ֔י וְאָנֹכִ֖י הוֹלֵ֣ךְ עֲרִירִ֑י וּבֶן־מֶ֣שֶׁק בֵּיתִ֔י ה֖וּא דַּמֶּ֥שֶׂק אֱלִיעֶֽזֶר׃
15:2 But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me, seeing that I shall die childless, aMeaning of Heb. uncertain.and the one in charge of my household is Dammesek Eliezer!”-a
15:2 And Abram said: ‘O Lord GOD, what wilt Thou give me, seeing I go hence childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’
ט"ו:ב׳ וַאֲמַר אַבְרָם יְיָ אֱלֹּהִים מַה תִּתֶּן לִי וַאֲנָא אָזֵיל בְּלָא וְלָד וּבַר פַּרְנָסָא הָדֵין דִּבְבֵיתִי הוּא דַּמַּשְׂקָאָה אֱלִיעֶזֶר:
ט"ו:ג׳ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אַבְרָ֔ם הֵ֣ן לִ֔י לֹ֥א נָתַ֖תָּה זָ֑רַע וְהִנֵּ֥ה בֶן־בֵּיתִ֖י יוֹרֵ֥שׁ אֹתִֽי׃
15:3 Abram said further, “Since You have granted me no offspring, my steward will be my heir.”
15:3 And Abram said: ‘Behold, to me Thou hast given no seed, and, lo, one born in my house is to be mine heir.’
ט"ו:ג׳ וַאֲמַר אַבְרָם הָא לִי לָא יְהַבְתְּ וְלָד וְהָא בַר בֵּיתִי יָרִית יָתִי:
ט"ו:ד׳ וְהִנֵּ֨ה דְבַר־יְהוָ֤ה אֵלָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹ֥א יִֽירָשְׁךָ֖ זֶ֑ה כִּי־אִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֵצֵ֣א מִמֵּעֶ֔יךָ ה֖וּא יִֽירָשֶֽׁךָ׃
15:4 The word of the LORD came to him in reply, “That one shall not be your heir; none but your very own issue shall be your heir.”
15:4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying: ‘This man shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.’
ט"ו:ד׳ וְהָא פִּתְגָּמָא דַּיְיָ עִמֵּיהּ לְמֵימַר לָא יִרְתִנָּךְ דֵּין אֱלָהֵין בַּר דְּתוֹלִיד הוּא יִרְתִנָּךְ:
ט"ו:ה׳ וַיּוֹצֵ֨א אֹת֜וֹ הַח֗וּצָה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַבֶּט־נָ֣א הַשָּׁמַ֗יְמָה וּסְפֹר֙ הַכּ֣וֹכָבִ֔ים אִם־תּוּכַ֖ל לִסְפֹּ֣ר אֹתָ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ כֹּ֥ה יִהְיֶ֖ה זַרְעֶֽךָ׃
15:5 He took him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He added, “So shall your offspring be.”
15:5 And He brought him forth abroad, and said: ‘Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if thou be able to count them’; and He said unto him: ‘So shall thy seed be.’
ט"ו:ה׳ וְאַפֵּיק יָתֵיהּ לְבָרָא וַאֲמַר אִסְתְּכִי כְּעַן לִשְׁמַיָּא וּמְנֵי כּוֹכְבַיָּא אִם תִּכּוֹל לְמִמְנֵי יָתְהוֹן וַאֲמַר לֵיהּ כְּדֵין יְהוֹן בְּנָךְ:
ט"ו:ו׳ וְהֶאֱמִ֖ן בַּֽיהוָ֑ה וַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָ לּ֖וֹ צְדָקָֽה׃
15:6 And because he put his trust in the LORD, He reckoned it to his merit.
15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him for righteousness.
ט"ו:ו׳ וְהֵימִין בְּמֵימְרָא דַיְיָ וְחָשְׁבַהּ לֵיהּ לְזָכוּ:
והאמין בה'. לֹא שָׁאַל לוֹ אוֹת עַל זֹאת; אֲבָל עַל יְרֻשַּׁת הָאָרֶץ שָׁאַל לוֹ אוֹת וְאָמַר לוֹ בַּמָּה אֵדַע.
