א׳:מ"ו וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ כָּל־הַפְּקֻדִ֔ים שֵׁשׁ־מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֖לֶף וּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֑ים וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת וַחֲמִשִּֽׁים׃

1:46 all who were enrolled came to 603,550.

1:46 even all those that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

א׳:מ"ו וַהֲווֹ כָּל מִנְיָנַיָּא שִׁית מְאָה וּתְלָתָא אַלְפִין וַחֲמֵשׁ מְאָה וְחַמְשִׁין:

א׳:מ"ז וְהַלְוִיִּ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה אֲבֹתָ֑ם לֹ֥א הָתְפָּקְד֖וּ בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ (פ)

1:47 The Levites, however, were not recorded among them by their ancestral tribe.

1:47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

א׳:מ"ז וְלֵוָאֵי לְשִׁבְטָא דַאֲבָהַתְהוֹן לָא אִתְמְנִיאוּ בֵּינֵיהוֹן:

א׳:מ"ח וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

1:48 For the LORD had spoken to Moses, saying:

א׳:מ"ח וּמַלִּיל יְיָ עִם משֶׁה לְמֵימָר:

א׳:מ"ט אַ֣ךְ אֶת־מַטֵּ֤ה לֵוִי֙ לֹ֣א תִפְקֹ֔ד וְאֶת־רֹאשָׁ֖ם לֹ֣א תִשָּׂ֑א בְּת֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

1:49 Do not on any account enroll the tribe of Levi or take a census of them with the Israelites.

1:49 ’Howbeit the tribe of Levi thou shalt not number, neither shalt thou take the sum of them among the children of Israel;

א׳:מ"ט בְּרַם יָת שִׁבְטָא דְלֵוִי לָא תִמְנֵי וְיָת חֻשְׁבַּנְהוֹן לָא תְקַבֵּל בְּגוֹ בְּנֵי יִשְׂראֵל:

אך את מטה לוי לא תפקד. כְּדַאי הוּא לִגְיוֹן שֶׁל מֶלֶךְ לִהְיוֹת נִמְנֶה לְבַדּוֹ (תנחומא); דָּ"אַ, צָפָה הַקָּבָּ"ה שֶׁעֲתִידָה לַעֲמֹד גְּזֵרָה עַל כָּל הַנִּמְנִין מִבֶּן עֶשְֹרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה שֶׁיָּמוּתוּ בַמִּדְבָּר, אָמַר אַל יִהְיוּ אֵלּוּ בִכְלָל, לְפִי שֶׁהֵם שֶׁלִּי, שֶׁלֹּא טָעוּ בָעֵגֶל (שם; בבא בתרא קכ"א):

א׳:נ׳ וְאַתָּ֡ה הַפְקֵ֣ד אֶת־הַלְוִיִּם֩ עַל־מִשְׁכַּ֨ן הָעֵדֻ֜ת וְעַ֣ל כָּל־כֵּלָיו֮ וְעַ֣ל כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ֒ הֵ֜מָּה יִשְׂא֤וּ אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ וְאֶת־כָּל־כֵּלָ֔יו וְהֵ֖ם יְשָׁרְתֻ֑הוּ וְסָבִ֥יב לַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן יַחֲנֽוּ׃

1:50 You shall put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Pact, all its furnishings, and everything that pertains to it: they shall carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall tend it; and they shall camp around the Tabernacle.

1:50 but appoint thou the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all the furniture thereof, and over all that belongeth to it; they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.

א׳:נ׳ וְאַתְּ מַנִּי יָת לֵוָאֵי עַל מַשְׁכְּנָא דְסַהֲדוּתָא וְעַל כָּל מָנוֹהִי וְעַל כָּל דִּי לֵיהּ אִנּוּן יִטְּלוּן יָת מַשְׁכְּנָא וְיָת כָּל מָנוֹהִי וְאִנּוּן יְשַׁמְּשֻׁנֵּיהּ וּסְחוֹר סְחוֹר לְמַשְׁכְּנָא יִשְׁרוּן:

ואתה הפקד את הלוים. כְּתַרְגּוּמוֹ "מַנִּי", לְשׁוֹן מִנּוּי שְׂרָרָה עַל דָּבָר שֶׁהוּא מְמֻנֶּה עָלָיו, כְּמוֹ "וְיַפְקֵד הַמֶּלֶךְ פְּקִידִים" (אסתר ב'):

א׳:נ"א וּבִנְסֹ֣עַ הַמִּשְׁכָּ֗ן יוֹרִ֤ידוּ אֹתוֹ֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם וּבַחֲנֹת֙ הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן יָקִ֥ימוּ אֹת֖וֹ הַלְוִיִּ֑ם וְהַזָּ֥ר הַקָּרֵ֖ב יוּמָֽת׃

1:51 When the Tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the Tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up; any outsider who encroaches shall be put to death.

1:51 And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up; and the common man that draweth nigh shall be put to death.

א׳:נ"א וּבְמִטַּל מַשְׁכְּנָא יְפָרְקוּן יָתֵיהּ לֵוָאֵי וּבְמִשְׁרֵי מַשְׁכְּנָא יְקִימוּן יָתֵיהּ לֵוָאֵי וְחִלּוֹנַי דְּיִקְרַב יִתְקְטָל:

יורידו אתו. כְּתַרְגּוּמוֹ "יְפָרְקוּן", כְּשֶׁבָּאִין לִסַּע בַּמִּדְבָּר מִמַּסָּע לְמַסָּע הָיוּ מְפָרְקִין אוֹתוֹ מֵהֲקָמָתוֹ, וְנוֹשְׂאִין אוֹתוֹ עַד מָקוֹם אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁכֹּן שָׁם הֶעָנָן, וְיַחֲנוּ שָׁם וּמְקִימִין אוֹתוֹ:

והזר הקרב. לַעֲבוֹדָתָם זוֹ:

יומת. בִּידֵי שָׁמַיִם:

א׳:נ"ב וְחָנ֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אִ֧ישׁ עַֽל־מַחֲנֵ֛הוּ וְאִ֥ישׁ עַל־דִּגְל֖וֹ לְצִבְאֹתָֽם׃

1:52 The Israelites shall encamp troop by troop, each man with his division and each under his standard.

1:52 And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man with his own camp, and every man with his own standard, according to their hosts.

א׳:נ"ב וְיִשְׁרוּן בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל גְּבַר עַל מַשְׁרוֹהִי וּגְבַר עַל טִקְסֵיהּ לְחֵילֵיהוֹן:

ואישׁ על דגלו. כְּמוֹ שֶׁהַדְּגָלִים סְדוּרִים בְּסֵפֶר זֶה – שְׁלֹשָׁה שְׁבָטִים לְכָל דֶּגֶל:

א׳:נ"ג וְהַלְוִיִּ֞ם יַחֲנ֤וּ סָבִיב֙ לְמִשְׁכַּ֣ן הָעֵדֻ֔ת וְלֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֣ה קֶ֔צֶף עַל־עֲדַ֖ת בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְשָׁמְרוּ֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם אֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת מִשְׁכַּ֥ן הָעֵדֽוּת׃

1:53 The Levites, however, shall camp around the Tabernacle of the Pact, that wrath may not strike the Israelite community; the Levites shall stand guard around the Tabernacle of the Pact.

1:53 But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.’

א׳:נ"ג וְלֵוָאֵי יִשְׁרוּן סְחוֹר סְחוֹר לְמַשְׁכְּנָא דְסַהֲדוּתָא וְלָא יְהֵי רוּגְזָא עַל כְּנִשְׁתָּא דִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְיִטְּרוּן לֵוָאֵי יָת מַטְּרַת מַשְׁכְּנָא דְסַהֲדוּתָא:

ולא יהיה קצף. אִם תַּעֲשׂוּ כְּמִצְוֹתַי לֹא יִהְיֶה קֶצֶף, וְאִם לָאו, שֶׁיִּכָּנְסוּ זָרִים בַּעֲבוֹדָתָם זוֹ, יִהְיֶה קֶצֶף, כְּמוֹ שֶׁמָּצִינוּ בְמַעֲשֵׂה קֹרַח (במדבר י"ז), כִּי יָצָא הַקֶּצֶף וְגוֹ':

א׳:נ"ד וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כְּ֠כֹל אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֖ה כֵּ֥ן עָשֽׂוּ׃ (פ)

1:54 The Israelites did accordingly; just as the LORD had commanded Moses, so they did.

1:54 Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.

א׳:נ"ד וַעֲבָדוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כְּכֹל דִּי פַקִּיד יְיָ יָת משֶׁה כֵּן עֲבָדוּ:
