Genesis 45:8–45:18
מ"ה:ח׳ וְעַתָּ֗ה לֹֽא־אַתֶּ֞ם שְׁלַחְתֶּ֤ם אֹתִי֙ הֵ֔נָּה כִּ֖י הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַיְשִׂימֵ֨נִֽי לְאָ֜ב לְפַרְעֹ֗ה וּלְאָדוֹן֙ לְכָל־בֵּית֔וֹ וּמֹשֵׁ֖ל בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
45:8 So, it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of all his household, and ruler over the whole land of Egypt.

מ"ה:ח׳ וּכְעַן לָא אַתּוּן שְׁלַחְתּוּן יָתִי הָכָא אֶלָּהֵן מִן קֳדָם יְיָ וְשַׁוְּיַנִי לְאַבָּא לְפַרְעֹה וּלְרִבּוֹן לְכָל אֱנַשׁ בֵּיתֵיהּ וְשַׁלִּיט בְּכָל אַרְעָא דְמִצְרָיִם:
מ"ה:ח׳ אור החיים
1וְעַתָּה לֹא אַתֶּם וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, לָתֵת טַעַם לְהָסִיר מִלִּבָּם חֲשַׁשׁ הַשִּׂנְאָה, לְבַל יַחְשְׁבוּ כִּי יוֹסֵף יִשְׂטֹם אוֹתָם וְיִשְׂנָאֵם עַל אֲשֶׁר נִתְאַכְזְרוּ עָלָיו, וְיִהְיֶה בְּעֵינֵיהֶם דָּבָר רָחוֹק שֶׁיִּהְיֶה לֵב יוֹסֵף נָכוֹן עִמָּם, לָזֶה אָמַר לָהֶם: הֵן אֱמֶת כִּי בִּשְׁעַת מַעֲשֶׂה אֲשֶׁר מְכָרוּהוּ הָיוּ הַדְּבָרִים זָרִים בְּעֵינָיו, אֵיךְ יִהְיֶה כָּל הָאַכְזָרִיּוּת בְּלֵב אַחִים עַל אֲחִיהֶם, וּרְאוּיִים הֵם לִהְיוֹת שְׂנוּאִים אֶצְלוֹ.
ועתה, לא אתם שלחתם אותי הנה, "Now, you did not send me here, etc." Joseph explained why he told the brothers not to worry that he still hated them for what they had done to him and how cruelly they had treated him. He implied that it was true that at the time he certainly had not understood why they could have harboured so much resentment against him; he had had reason to hate them for that; ועתה, now, things had become clear.
2אָכֵן עַתָּה, אַחַר רְאוֹתוֹ כָּל הַנִּמְשָׁךְ מִירִידָתוֹ מִצְרַיִם, יָדַע כִּי הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הָיָה מֵאֵת ה׳, וְהֵם שְׁלִיחוּתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ עָשׂוּ וְלֹא שְׁלִיחוּת עַצְמָם, וּבָזֶה אֵין מָקוֹם לִשְׁמֹר לָהֶם אֵיבָה וְלֹא לְהַרְחִיק מִדַּת הָאַחְוָה מֵהֶם.
Having reflected on all that had transpired since the brothers had sold him, Joseph had realised that it had been part of an overall design orchestrated by G'd. The brothers had merely been G'd's agents, though they did not realise it at the time. It would not be appropriate for him to continue to feel hatred towards them.
3וְאוּלַי כִּי בָּזֶה הָיָה לָהֶם פָּנִים לַעֲמֹד לִפְנֵי אֲבִיהֶם כְּשֶׁנִּגְלָה הַדָּבָר, כִּי הֵם הַגּוֹרְמִים לוֹ אֵבֶל וּבְכִי עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁתַּיִם שָׁנָה וְעָשׂוּ הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הַמּוּפְלָא בְּמֶכֶר אֲחִיהֶם, וְרוֹאַנִי שֶׁגַּם בּוֹשׁ לֹא יֵבוֹשׁוּ מֵאֲבִיהֶם. וְהָיָה נִרְאֶה לוֹמַר כִּי יַעֲקֹב לֹא יָדַע גּוּף הַמַּעֲשֶׂה, וְזֶה דֶּרֶךְ רָחוֹק, כִּי פְּשִׁיטָא שֶׁלֹּא יִמָּנַע מֵחֲקוֹר זֹאת הֵיאַךְ נִתְגַּלְגְּלוּ הַדְּבָרִים עַד שֶׁיָּרַד יוֹסֵף לְמִצְרַיִם, וְגַם מַעֲשֵׂה כְּתֹנֶת הַפַּסִּים הַמּוּבָא אֵלָיו מֻטְבָּל בְּדָם. אֶלָּא וַדַּאי כִּי בְּטַעֲנַת ״לֹא אַתֶּם שְׁלַחְתֶּם״ וְגוֹ׳ שֶׁאָמַר יוֹסֵף, הֻכַּר הַדָּבָר כִּי מֵאֵת ה׳ הָיְתָה זֹאת וְאֵין לְהַרְהֵר אַחַר מִדּוֹתָיו, וְהוּא אָמְרָם זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (בראשית רבה פז:א) רָאוּי הָיָה יַעֲקֹב לָרֶדֶת בְּשַׁלְשְׁלָאוֹת וְכוּ׳:
Perhaps this consideration enabled the brothers to face their father who would now have to become aware that it was the brothers who had caused him to mourn the loss of Joseph all these years. In view of the outcome, the brothers did not even need to feel shame when they faced their father. It is quite unlikely that once Jacob had become aware that Joseph was the ruler in Egypt that he should not have made every effort to find out how Joseph came to be in Egypt and what happened to cause his striped coat to become blood-drenched at the time. The only argument that would reconcile Jacob and his sons with what had happened was that it had become evident that G'd's plan had been executed step by step. There was no point in second-guessing why and how G'd had brought all this about. Our sages in Bereshit Rabbah 86,1 have already said that Jacob had originally been meant to descend to Egypt in chains, but that the sale of Joseph enabled him to arrive in Egypt in style, i.e. riding in Pharaoh's chariot.
מ"ה:ט׳ מַהֲרוּ֮ וַעֲל֣וּ אֶל־אָבִי֒ וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֣ם אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ בִּנְךָ֣ יוֹסֵ֔ף שָׂמַ֧נִי אֱלֹהִ֛ים לְאָד֖וֹן לְכָל־מִצְרָ֑יִם רְדָ֥ה אֵלַ֖י אַֽל־תַּעֲמֹֽד׃
45:9 “Now, hurry back to my father and say to him: Thus says your son Joseph, ‘God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me without delay.
45:9 Hasten ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him: Thus saith thy son Joseph: God hath made me lord of all Egypt; come down unto me, tarry not.
מ"ה:ט׳ אוֹחוּ וּסְקוֹ לְוַת אַבָּא וְתֵימְרוּן לֵיהּ כִּדְנַן אֲמַר בְּרָךְ יוֹסֵף שַׁוְּיַנִי יְיָ לְרִבּוֹן לְכָל מִצְרָיִם חוּת לְוָתִי לָא תִתְעַכָּב:
מ"ה:י׳ וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֣ בְאֶֽרֶץ־גֹּ֗שֶׁן וְהָיִ֤יתָ קָרוֹב֙ אֵלַ֔י אַתָּ֕ה וּבָנֶ֖יךָ וּבְנֵ֣י בָנֶ֑יךָ וְצֹאנְךָ֥ וּבְקָרְךָ֖ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־לָֽךְ׃
45:10 You will dwell in the region of Goshen, where you will be near me—you and your children and your grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all that is yours.
45:10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children’s children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast;
מ"ה:י׳ וְתֵתֵיב בְּאַרְעָא דְגשֶׁן וּתְהֵי קָרִיב לִי אַתְּ וּבְנָךְ וּבְנֵי בְנָךְ וְעָנָךְ וְתוֹרָךְ וְכָל דִּי לָךְ:
מ"ה:י"א וְכִלְכַּלְתִּ֤י אֹֽתְךָ֙ שָׁ֔ם כִּי־ע֛וֹד חָמֵ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים רָעָ֑ב פֶּן־תִּוָּרֵ֛שׁ אַתָּ֥ה וּבֵֽיתְךָ֖ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־לָֽךְ׃
45:11 There I will provide for you—for there are yet five years of famine to come—that you and your household and all that is yours may not suffer want.’
45:11 and there will I sustain thee; for there are yet five years of famine; lest thou come to poverty, thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast.
מ"ה:י"א וְאֵזוּן יָתָךְ תַּמָּן אֲרֵי עוֹד חֲמֵשׁ שְׁנִין כַּפְנָא דִּלְמָא תִתְמַסְכַּן אַתְּ וֶאֱנַשׁ בֵּיתָךְ וְכָל דִּי לָךְ:
מ"ה:י"ב וְהִנֵּ֤ה עֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ רֹא֔וֹת וְעֵינֵ֖י אָחִ֣י בִנְיָמִ֑ין כִּי־פִ֖י הַֽמְדַבֵּ֥ר אֲלֵיכֶֽם׃
45:12 You can see for yourselves, and my brother Benjamin for himself, that it is indeed I who am speaking to you.
45:12 And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you.
מ"ה:י"ב וְהָא עֵינֵיכוֹן חֲזָן וְעֵינֵי אָחִי בִנְיָמִין אֲרֵי בְלִישָׁנְכוֹן אֲנָא מְמַלֵּל עִמְּכוֹן:
מ"ה:י"ג וְהִגַּדְתֶּ֣ם לְאָבִ֗י אֶת־כָּל־כְּבוֹדִי֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר רְאִיתֶ֑ם וּמִֽהַרְתֶּ֛ם וְהוֹרַדְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־אָבִ֖י הֵֽנָּה׃
45:13 And you must tell my father everything about my high station in Egypt and all that you have seen; and bring my father here with all speed.”
45:13 And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall hasten and bring down my father hither.’
מ"ה:י"ג וּתְחַוּוּן לְאַבָּא יָת כָּל יְקָרִי בְּמִצְרַיִם וְיָת כָּל דִּי חֲזֵיתוּן וְתוֹחוּן וְתַחֲתוּן יָת אַבָּא הָכָא:
מ"ה:י"ד וַיִּפֹּ֛ל עַל־צַוְּארֵ֥י בִנְיָמִֽן־אָחִ֖יו וַיֵּ֑בְךְּ וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן בָּכָ֖ה עַל־צַוָּארָֽיו׃
45:14 With that he embracedaLit. “fell on.” his brother Benjamin around the neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.
45:14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck.
מ"ה:י"ד וּנְפַל עַל צַוְּארֵי בִנְיָמִן אֲחוּהִי וּבְכָא וּבִנְיָמִן בְּכָא עַל צַוְּארֵיהּ:
ובנימין בכה על צואריו. עַל מִשְׁכַּן שִׁילֹה שֶׁעָתִיד לִהְיוֹת בְּחֶלְקוֹ שֶׁל יוֹסֵף וְסוֹפוֹ לֵחָרֵב (שם):
מ"ה:ט"ו וַיְנַשֵּׁ֥ק לְכָל־אֶחָ֖יו וַיֵּ֣בְךְּ עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְאַ֣חֲרֵי כֵ֔ן דִּבְּר֥וּ אֶחָ֖יו אִתּֽוֹ׃
45:15 He kissed all his brothers and wept upon them; only then were his brothers able to talk to him.
45:15 And he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them; and after that his brethren talked with him.
מ"ה:ט"ו וּנְשַׁק לְכָל אֲחוֹהִי וּבְכָא עֲלֵיהוֹן וּבָתַר כֵּן מַלִּילוּ אֲחוֹהִי עִמֵּיהּ:
מ"ה:ט"ו אור החיים
1וַיֵּבְךְּ עֲלֵיהֶם וְאַחֲרֵי כֵן דִּבְּרוּ וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, אַחַר שֶׁרָאוּ שֶׁבָּכָה עֲלֵיהֶם, אָז סָמַךְ לִבָּם וְדִבְּרוּ אִתּוֹ, כִּי כָל הַדְּבָרִים שֶׁהָיָה אוֹמֵר אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁהָיָה אוֹמֵר לָהֶם כֵּן לְהָסִיר מֵהֶם הַבּוּשָׁה, וּלְעוֹלָם לְבָבוֹ יִמַר עֲלֵיהֶם מִצַּד הַמַּעֲשֶׂה. אָכֵן כְּשֶׁרָאוּ שֶׁחִבֵּק אוֹתָם וּבָכָה עַל פְּרֵידָתָם, הִכִּירוּ בְּמִדַּת טוּבוֹ כִּי אָח נֶאֱמָן הוּא וְדִבְּרוּ אִתּוֹ. וַהֲגַם שֶׁבָּכָה מִקּוֹדֶם, אֵין הוֹכָחָה מִזֶּה, כִּי אֶפְשָׁר זָכַר צָרָתוֹ וּבָכָה עָלֶיהָ, מַה שֶׁאֵין כֵּן בְּכִי זֶה שֶׁבָּכָה עֲלֵיהֶם. גַּם בְּכִי הָרִאשׁוֹן יֵשׁ מָקוֹם לִתְלוֹת שֶׁבָּכָה עַל פְּרֵידַת בִּנְיָמִין, מַה שֶׁאֵין כֵּן כְּשֶׁבָּכָה עֲלֵיהֶם בִּפְרָטוּת, זֶה יַגִּיד אַחְוָה בַּלֵּב.
ויבך עליהם, He cried over them, etc. After the brothers observed Joseph crying over them they were able to respond to him and they said to him whatever was on their minds. After all, everything that Joseph had said to them up to that point might have been designed only to alleviate the brothers' feeling ashamed of their conduct. It was only after he kissed them and wept over the years they had been separate that the brothers recognised Joseph's truly good character and that he was a true brother that they were able to speak to him naturally. Whereas Joseph's original burst of weeping could have been attributed to his reunion with Benjamin, the latest burst of weeping definitely concerned his reunion with all of them.
מ"ה:ט"ז וְהַקֹּ֣ל נִשְׁמַ֗ע בֵּ֤ית פַּרְעֹה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר בָּ֖אוּ אֲחֵ֣י יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיִּיטַב֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה וּבְעֵינֵ֖י עֲבָדָֽיו׃
45:16 The news reached Pharaoh’s palace: “Joseph’s brothers have come.” Pharaoh and his courtiers were pleased.
45:16 And the report thereof was heard in Pharaoh’s house, saying: ‘Joseph’s brethren are come’; and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.
מ"ה:ט"ז וְקָלָא אִשְׁתְּמַע לְבֵית פַּרְעֹה לְמֵימַר עַלּוּ אֲחֵי יוֹסֵף וּשְׁפַר בְּעֵינֵי פַרְעֹה וּבְעֵינֵי עַבְדּוֹהִי:
מ"ה:ט"ז אור החיים
1וְהַקּוֹל נִשְׁמַע וְגוֹ׳ לֵאמֹר וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, לֶהֱיוֹת שֶׁכְּבָר הוֹדִיעַ הַכָּתוּב לְמַעְלָה כִּי שָׁמְעוּ מִצְרַיִם וּבֵית פַּרְעֹה בְּכִי יוֹסֵף, דִּכְתִיב (בראשית מה:ב) ״וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ מִצְרַיִם״ וְגוֹ׳, עַתָּה מוֹדִיעַ הַכָּתוּב כִּי הַקּוֹל שֶׁשָּׁמְעוּ בֵּית פַּרְעֹה הָאָמוּר לְמַעְלָה וְלֹא יָדְעוּ מַה הוּא וְעַל מָה הָיָה, וְעַתָּה אָמְרוּ לָהֶם כִּי זֶה הָיָה לְצַד בִּיאַת אֶחָיו שֶׁל יוֹסֵף.
והקול נשמע בית פרעה, the report reached Pharaoh's palace, etc. Inasmuch as the Torah (verse 2) had already reported Joseph as crying out aloud, the Torah now had to report that the reason for Joseph's strange behaviour had become clear. Pharaoh and his servants now realised that a great reunion had taken place.
2וַיִּיטַב בְּעֵינֵי וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, כִּי קוֹדֶם הָיְתָה לָהֶם חֶרְפָּה כִּי עֶבֶד מוֹלֵךְ, וּבְבִיאַת אֶחָיו וַיִּיטַב בְּעֵינָיו כִּי הוּכַּר שֶׁאֵינוֹ עֶבֶד.
וייטב בעיני פרעה ובעיני עבדיו, and both Pharaoh and his servants were pleased about this. Whereas up until now they had felt embarassed that a former slave ruled over them, the brothers' arrival made it clear that Joseph had never been a slave.
מ"ה:י"ז וַיֹּ֤אמֶר פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֔ף אֱמֹ֥ר אֶל־אַחֶ֖יךָ זֹ֣את עֲשׂ֑וּ טַֽעֲנוּ֙ אֶת־בְּעִ֣ירְכֶ֔ם וּלְכוּ־בֹ֖אוּ אַ֥רְצָה כְּנָֽעַן׃
45:17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Say to your brothers, ‘Do as follows: load up your beasts and go at once to the land of Canaan.
45:17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph: ‘Say unto thy brethren: This do ye: lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan;
מ"ה:י"ז וַאֲמַר פַּרְעֹה לְיוֹסֵף אֱמַר לְאַחָיךְ דָּא עִיבִידוּ טְעוּנוּ יָת בְּעִירְכוֹן וֶאֱזִילוּ אוֹבִילוּ לְאַרְעָא דִכְנָעַן:
מ"ה:י"ז אור החיים
1זֹאת עֲשׂוּ. פֵּרוּשׁ, דָּבָר זֶה אֵינְכֶם צְרִיכִין לַעֲשׂוֹתוֹ בִּרְשׁוּת, אֲבָל הָעֲגָלוֹת אֵינְכֶם יְכוֹלִין לַעֲשׂוֹת כִּי אִם בִּרְשׁוּת, וַאֲפִלּוּ רְשׁוּת מִיּוֹסֵף לֹא תוֹעִיל אֶלָּא צָרִיךְ שֶׁיֹּאמַר שֶׁהוּא עוֹשֶׂה בִּרְשׁוּת פַּרְעֹה, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ וְאַתָּה צֻוֵּיתָה וְגוֹ׳, וְכֵן הוּא אוֹמֵר וַיִּתֵּן לָהֶם וְגוֹ׳ עֲגָלוֹת עַל פִּי פַרְעֹה, וְזֶה הָיָה מִנִּימוּסֵי מִצְרַיִם.
זאת עשו, "Do this, etc." Whereas you do not require permission for most of what you are about to do, you do need Pharaoh's permission to take the wagons for transporting your families. When the Torah describes Pharaoh as telling Joseph to present the wagons to be used as something Pharaoh had "commanded, etc." this is only a figure of speech for a courteous invitation by Pharaoh that the brothers' families should avail themselves of these facilities on their journey to Egypt.
2עוֹד יִרְצֶה בְּאָמְרוֹ זֹאת עֲשׂוּ, פֵּרוּשׁ כִּי הוּא בְּצַו לָהֶם, לֹא שֶׁמִּתְרַצֶּה לְבַד לַעֲשׂוֹת עִמָּהֶם חֶסֶד, אֶלָּא שֶׁהוּא חָפֵץ בַּדָּבָר וְאוֹמֵר זֹאת עֲשׂוּ. וּמֵה׳ יָצָא הַדָּבָר כְּדֵי שֶׁיֵּרְדוּ אֲבוֹתֵינוּ מִצְרַיִם.
The command עשו may also express something stronger than permission; Pharaoh had realised that what had been happening was Divinely decreed, that over and beyond the fact that Pharaoh was pleased to assist the migration of Jacob's family, he saw in all this a decree by G'd.
מ"ה:י"ח וּקְח֧וּ אֶת־אֲבִיכֶ֛ם וְאֶת־בָּתֵּיכֶ֖ם וּבֹ֣אוּ אֵלָ֑י וְאֶתְּנָ֣ה לָכֶ֗ם אֶת־טוּב֙ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם וְאִכְל֖וּ אֶת־חֵ֥לֶב הָאָֽרֶץ׃
45:18 Take your father and your households and come to me; I will give you the best of the land of Egypt and you shall live off the fat of the land.’
45:18 and take your father and your households, and come unto me; and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land.
מ"ה:י"ח וּדְבָרוּ יָת אֲבוּכוֹן וְיָת אֱנַשׁ בָּתֵּיכוֹן וְעוּלוּ לְוָתִי וְאֶתֵּן לְכוֹן יָת טוּב אַרְעָא דְמִצְרַיִם וְתֵיכְלוּן יָת טוּבָא דְאַרְעָא:
