ל"ח:א׳ וַֽיְהִי֙ בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔וא וַיֵּ֥רֶד יְהוּדָ֖ה מֵאֵ֣ת אֶחָ֑יו וַיֵּ֛ט עַד־אִ֥ישׁ עֲדֻלָּמִ֖י וּשְׁמ֥וֹ חִירָֽה׃

38:1 About that time Judah left his brothers and camped near a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah.

38:1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

ל"ח:א׳ וַהֲוָה בְּעִדָּנָא הַהִיא וּנְחַת יְהוּדָה מִלְּוַת אֲחוֹהִי וּסְטָא עַד גַּבְרָא עֲדֻלָּמָאָה וּשְׁמֵיהּ חִירָה:

ויהי בעת ההוא. לָמָּה נִסְמְכָה פָרָשָׁה זוֹ לְכָאן, וְהִפְסִיק בְּפָרָשָׁתוֹ שֶׁל יוֹסֵף? לְלַמֵּד שֶׁהוֹרִידוּהוּ אֶחָיו מִגְּדֻלָּתוֹ כְּשֶׁרָאוּ בְצָרַת אֲבִיהֶם, אָמְרוּ: אַתָּה אָמַרְתָּ לְמָכְרוֹ, אִלּוּ אָמַרְתָּ לַהֲשִׁיבוֹ הָיִינוּ שׁוֹמְעִים לְךָ:

ויט. מֵאֵת אֶחָיו:

עד איש עדלמי. נִשְׁתַּתֵּף עִמּוֹ:

ל"ח:ב׳ וַיַּרְא־שָׁ֧ם יְהוּדָ֛ה בַּת־אִ֥ישׁ כְּנַעֲנִ֖י וּשְׁמ֣וֹ שׁ֑וּעַ וַיִּקָּחֶ֖הָ וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶֽיהָ׃

38:2 There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua, and he married her and cohabited with her.

38:2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; and he took her, and went in unto her.

ל"ח:ב׳ וַחֲזָא תַמָּן יְהוּדָה בַּת גְּבַר תַּגָּרָא וּשְׁמֵיהּ שׁוּעַ וְנָסְבַהּ וְעַל לְוָתַהּ:

כנעני. תַּגְרָא (בראשית רבה):

ל"ח:ג׳ וַתַּ֖הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ עֵֽר׃

38:3 She conceived and bore a son, and he named him Er.

38:3 And she conceived, and bore a son; and he called his name Er.

ל"ח:ג׳ וְעַדִּיאַת וִילִידַת בָּר וּקְרָא יָת שְׁמֵיהּ עֵר:

ל"ח:ד׳ וַתַּ֥הַר ע֖וֹד וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ אוֹנָֽן׃

38:4 She conceived again and bore a son, and named him Onan.

38:4 And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she called his name Onan.

ל"ח:ד׳ וְעַדִּיאַת עוֹד וִילִידַת בָּר וּקְרַת יָת שְׁמֵיהּ אוֹנָן:

ל"ח:ה׳ וַתֹּ֤סֶף עוֹד֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ שֵׁלָ֑ה וְהָיָ֥ה בִכְזִ֖יב בְּלִדְתָּ֥הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃

38:5 Once again she bore a son, and named him Shelah; he was at Chezib when she bore him.

38:5 And she yet again bore a son, and called his name Shelah; and he was at Chezib, when she bore him.

ל"ח:ה׳ וְאוֹסִיפַת עוֹד וִילִידַת בָּר וּקְרַת יָת שְׁמֵיהּ שֵׁלָה וַהֲוָה בִכְזִיב כַּד יְלִידַת יָתֵיהּ:

והיה בכזיב. שֵׁם הַמָּקוֹם. וְאוֹמֵר אֲנִי עַל שֵׁם שֶׁפָּסְקָה מִלֶּדֶת נִקְרָא כְזִיב, לְשׁוֹן הָיוֹ תִהְיֶה לִי כְּמוֹ אַכְזָב (ירמיהו ט"ו), אֲשֶׁר לֹא יְכַזְּבוּ מֵימָיו (ישעיהו נ"ח), וְאִם לֹא כֵן מַה בָּא לְהוֹדִיעֵנוּ? וּבִבְ"רַ רָאִיתִי, וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ שֵׁלָה וגוֹמֵר פְּסַקַת:

ל"ח:ו׳ וַיִּקַּ֧ח יְהוּדָ֛ה אִשָּׁ֖ה לְעֵ֣ר בְּכוֹר֑וֹ וּשְׁמָ֖הּ תָּמָֽר׃

38:6 Judah got a wife for Er his first-born; her name was Tamar.

38:6 And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, and her name was Tamar.

ל"ח:ו׳ וּנְסִיב יְהוּדָה אִתְּתָא לְעֵר בּוּכְרֵיהּ וּשְׁמַהּ תָּמָר:

ל"ח:ז׳ וַיְהִ֗י עֵ֚ר בְּכ֣וֹר יְהוּדָ֔ה רַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיְמִתֵ֖הוּ יְהוָֽה׃

38:7 But Er, Judah’s first-born, was displeasing to the LORD, and the LORD took his life.

38:7 And Er, Judah’s first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

ל"ח:ז׳ וַהֲוָה עֵר בּוּכְרָא דִיהוּדָה בִּישׁ קֳדָם יְיָ וַאֲמִיתֵיהּ יְיָ:

רע בעיני ה'. כְּרָעָתוֹ שֶׁל אוֹנָן, מַשְׁחִית זַרְעוֹ, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר בְּאוֹנָן וַיָּמֶת גַּם אֹתוֹ, כְּמִיתָתוֹ שֶׁל עֵר מִיתָתוֹ שֶׁל אוֹנָן. וְלָמָּה הָיָה עֵר מַשְׁחִית זַרְעוֹ? כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא תִּתְעַבֵּר וְיַכְחִישׁ יָפְיָהּ:

ל"ח:ח׳ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ לְאוֹנָ֔ן בֹּ֛א אֶל־אֵ֥שֶׁת אָחִ֖יךָ וְיַבֵּ֣ם אֹתָ֑הּ וְהָקֵ֥ם זֶ֖רַע לְאָחִֽיךָ׃

38:8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Join with your brother’s wife and do your duty by her as a brother-in-law,aCf. Deut. 25.5. and provide offspring for your brother.”

38:8 And Judah said unto Onan: ‘Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto her, and raise up seed to thy brother.’

ל"ח:ח׳ וַאֲמַר יְהוּדָה לְאוֹנָן עוּל לְוַת אִתַּת אָחוּךְ וְיַבֵּם יָתַהּ וַאֲקֵים זַרְעָא לְאָחוּךְ:

והקם זרע. הַבֵּן יִקָּרֵא עַל שֵׁם הַמֵּת:

ל"ח:ט׳ וַיֵּ֣דַע אוֹנָ֔ן כִּ֛י לֹּ֥א ל֖וֹ יִהְיֶ֣ה הַזָּ֑רַע וְהָיָ֞ה אִם־בָּ֨א אֶל־אֵ֤שֶׁת אָחִיו֙ וְשִׁחֵ֣ת אַ֔רְצָה לְבִלְתִּ֥י נְתָן־זֶ֖רַע לְאָחִֽיו׃

38:9 But Onan, knowing that the seed would not count as his, let it go to wastebLit. “spoil on the ground.” whenever he joined with his brother’s wife, so as not to provide offspring for his brother.

38:9 And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; and it came to pass when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.

ל"ח:ט׳ וִידַע אוֹנָן אֲרֵי לָא עַל שְׁמֵיהּ מִתְקְרֵי זַרְעָא וַהֲוָה כַּד עֲלִיל לְוַת אִתַּת אֲחוּהִי וּמְחַבֵּל אָרְחֵיהּ עַל אַרְעָא בְּדִיל דְּלָא לְקַיָּמָא זַרְעָא לַאֲחוּהִי:

ושחת ארצה. דָּשׁ מִבִּפְנִים וְזוֹרֶה מִבַּחוּץ (בראשית רבה):

ל"ח:י׳ וַיֵּ֛רַע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה וַיָּ֖מֶת גַּם־אֹתֽוֹ׃

38:10 What he did was displeasing to the LORD, and He took his life also.

38:10 And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of the LORD; and He slew him also.

ל"ח:י׳ וּבְאֵישׁ קֳדָם יְיָ דִּי עֲבָד וַאֲמִית אַף יָתֵיהּ:

ל"ח:י"א וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָה֩ לְתָמָ֨ר כַּלָּת֜וֹ שְׁבִ֧י אַלְמָנָ֣ה בֵית־אָבִ֗יךְ עַד־יִגְדַּל֙ שֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֔י כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר פֶּן־יָמ֥וּת גַּם־ה֖וּא כְּאֶחָ֑יו וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ תָּמָ֔ר וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב בֵּ֥ית אָבִֽיהָ׃

38:11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Stay as a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up”—for he thought, “He too might die like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s house.

38:11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law: ‘Remain a widow in thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown up’; for he said: ‘Lest he also die, like his brethren.’ And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

ל"ח:י"א וַאֲמַר יְהוּדָה לְתָמָר כַּלְּתֵיהּ תִּיבִי אַרְמְלָא בֵית אָבִיךְ עַד דִּרְבָא שֵׁלָה בְרִי אֲרֵי אֲמַר דִּלְמָא יְמוּת אַף הוּא כְּאָחֹהִי וַאֲזָלַת תָּמָר וִיתִיבַת בֵּית אָבוּהָא:

כי אמר וגו'. כְּלוֹמַר, דּוֹחֶה הָיָה אוֹתָהּ בְּקַשׁ, שֶׁלֹּא הָיָה בְדַעְתּוֹ לְהַשִּׂיאָהּ לוֹ:

כי אמר פן ימות. מֻחְזֶקֶת הִיא זוֹ שֶׁיָּמוּתוּ אֲנָשֶׁיהָ (כתובות מ"ג):

ל"ח:י"ב וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים וַתָּ֖מָת בַּת־שׁ֣וּעַ אֵֽשֶׁת־יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיַּ֜עַל עַל־גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י צֹאנוֹ֙ ה֗וּא וְחִירָ֛ה רֵעֵ֥הוּ הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י תִּמְנָֽתָה׃

38:12 A long time afterward, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. When cLit. “he was comforted.”his period of mourning was over,-c Judah went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, together with his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

38:12 And in process of time Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheep-shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

ל"ח:י"ב וּסְגִיאוּ יוֹמַיָּא וּמִתַת בַּת שׁוּעַ אִתַּת יְהוּדָא וְאִתְנַחֵם יְהוּדָה וּסְלִיק עַל גּוֹזְזֵי עָנֵיהּ הוּא וְחִירָה רַחֲמֵיהּ עֲדֻלָּמָאָה לְתִמְנָת:

ויעל על גוזזי צאנו. וַיַּעַל תִּמְנָתָה לַעֲמֹד עַל גּוֹזְזֵי צֹאנוֹ:

ל"ח:י"ג וַיֻּגַּ֥ד לְתָמָ֖ר לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֥ה חָמִ֛יךְ עֹלֶ֥ה תִמְנָ֖תָה לָגֹ֥ז צֹאנֽוֹ׃

38:13 And Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is coming up to Timnah for the sheepshearing.”

38:13 And it was told Tamar, saying: ‘Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Timnah to shear his sheep.’

ל"ח:י"ג וְאִתְחַוָּא לְתָמָר לְמֵימָר הָא חֲמוּיִךְ סָלֵק לְתִמְנָת לְמֵיגַז עָנֵיהּ:

עלה תמנתה. וּבְשִׁמְשׁוֹן הוּא אוֹמֵר וַיֵּרֶד שִׁמְשׁוֹן תִּמְנָתָה (שופטים י"ד)? בְּשִׁפּוּעַ הָהָר הָיְתָה יוֹשֶׁבֶת, עוֹלִין לָהּ מִכָּאן וְיוֹרְדִין לָהּ מִכָּאן:

ל"ח:י"ד וַתָּסַר֩ בִּגְדֵ֨י אַלְמְנוּתָ֜הּ מֵֽעָלֶ֗יהָ וַתְּכַ֤ס בַּצָּעִיף֙ וַתִּתְעַלָּ֔ף וַתֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ בְּפֶ֣תַח עֵינַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־דֶּ֣רֶךְ תִּמְנָ֑תָה כִּ֤י רָאֲתָה֙ כִּֽי־גָדַ֣ל שֵׁלָ֔ה וְהִ֕וא לֹֽא־נִתְּנָ֥ה ל֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

38:14 So she took off her widow’s garb, covered her face with a veil, and, wrapping herself up, sat down at the entrance to Enaim,dCf. Enam, Josh. 15.34. Others “in an open place” or “at the crossroad.” which is on the road to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, yet she had not been given to him as wife.

38:14 And she put off from her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the entrance of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she was not given unto him to wife.

ל"ח:י"ד וְאַעְדִּיאַת לְבוּשֵׁי אַרְמְלוּתַהּ מִנַּהּ וְאִתְכַּסִּיאַת בְּעֵיפָא וְאִתַּקָּנַת וִיתִיבַת בְּפָרָשׁוּת עַיְנִין דִּי עַל אֹרַח תִּמְנָת אֲרֵי חָזַת אֲרֵי רְבָא שֵׁלָה וְהִיא לָא אִתְיְהִיבַת לֵיהּ לְאִנְתּוּ:

ותתעלף. כִּסְּתָה פָנֶיהָ, שֶׁלֹּא יַכִּיר בָּהּ:

ותשב בפתח עינים. בִּפְתִיחַת עֵינַיִם, בְּפָרָשַׁת דְּרָכִים שֶׁעַל דֶּרֶךְ תִּמְנָתָה. וְרַבּוֹתֵינוּ דָּרְשׁוּ בְּפִתְחוֹ שֶׁל אַבְרָהָם אָבִינוּ, שֶׁכָּל עֵינַיִם מְצַפּוֹת לִרְאוֹתוֹ (סוטה י'):

כי ראתה כי גדל שלה וגו'. לְפִיכָךְ הִפְקִירָה עַצְמָהּ אֵצֶל יְהוּדָה, שֶׁהָיְתָה מִתְאַוָּה לְהַעֲמִיד מִמֶּנּוּ בָנִים:

ל"ח:ט"ו וַיִּרְאֶ֣הָ יְהוּדָ֔ה וַֽיַּחְשְׁבֶ֖הָ לְזוֹנָ֑ה כִּ֥י כִסְּתָ֖ה פָּנֶֽיהָ׃

38:15 When Judah saw her, he took her for a harlot; for she had covered her face.

38:15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she had covered her face.

ל"ח:ט"ו וַחֲזָאַהּ יְהוּדָה וְחַשְּׁבַהּ כְּנָפְקַת בָּרָא אֲרֵי כַסִּיאַת אַפָּהָא:

ויחשבה לזונה. לְפִי שֶׁיּוֹשֶׁבֶת בְּפָרָשַׁת דְּרָכִים:

כי כסתה פניה. וְלֹא יָכוֹל לִרְאוֹתָהּ וּלְהַכִּירָהּ. וּמִדְרַשׁ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ כי כסתה פניה, כְּשֶׁהָיְתָה בְּבֵית חָמִיהָ הָיְתָה צְנוּעָה, לְפִיכָךְ לֹא חֲשָׁדָהּ:

ל"ח:ט"ז וַיֵּ֨ט אֵלֶ֜יהָ אֶל־הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הָֽבָה־נָּא֙ אָב֣וֹא אֵלַ֔יִךְ כִּ֚י לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע כִּ֥י כַלָּת֖וֹ הִ֑וא וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ מַה־תִּתֶּן־לִּ֔י כִּ֥י תָב֖וֹא אֵלָֽי׃

38:16 So he turned aside to her by the road and said, “Here, let me sleep with you”—for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. “What,” she asked, “will you pay for sleeping with me?”

38:16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said: ‘Come, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee’; for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said: ‘What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?’

ל"ח:ט"ז וּסְטָא לְוָתַהּ לְאָרְחָא וַאֲמַר הָבִי כְעַן אֵיעוֹל לְוָתִיךְ אֲרֵי לָא יְדַע אֲרֵי כַלְּתֵיהּ הִיא וַאֲמֶרֶת מַה תִּתֵּן לִי אֲרֵי תֵיעוֹל לְוָתִי:

ויט אליה אל הדרך. מִדֶּרֶךְ שֶׁהָיָה בָהּ, נָטָה אֶל הַדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר הִיא בָּהּ, וּבִלְשׁוֹן לַעַז דשטורנ"יר:

הבה נא. הָכִינִי עַצְמֵךְ וְדַעְתֵּךְ לְכָךְ. כָּל לְשׁוֹן הָבָה לְשׁוֹן הַזְמָנָה הוּא, חוּץ מִמָּקוֹם שֶׁיֵּשׁ לְתַרְגְּמוֹ בִּלְשׁוֹן נְתִינָה, וְאַף אוֹתָן שֶׁל הַזְמָנָה קְרוֹבִים לִלְשׁוֹן נְתִינָה הֵם:

ל"ח:י"ז וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָנֹכִ֛י אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח גְּדִֽי־עִזִּ֖ים מִן־הַצֹּ֑אן וַתֹּ֕אמֶר אִם־תִּתֵּ֥ן עֵרָב֖וֹן עַ֥ד שָׁלְחֶֽךָ׃

38:17 He replied, “I will send a kid from my flock.” But she said, “You must leave a pledge until you have sent it.”

38:17 And he said: ‘I will send thee a kid of the goats from the flock.’ And she said: ‘Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?’

ל"ח:י"ז וַאֲמַר אֲנָא אֲשַׁלַּח גַּדְיָא בַר עִזֵּי מִן עָנָא וַאֲמֶרֶת אִם תִּתֵּן מַשְׁכּוֹנָא עַד דְּתִשְׁלָח:

ערבון. מַשְׁכּוֹן:

ל"ח:י"ח וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מָ֣ה הָֽעֵרָבוֹן֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶתֶּן־לָּךְ֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר חֹתָֽמְךָ֙ וּפְתִילֶ֔ךָ וּמַטְּךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ וַיִּתֶּן־לָּ֛הּ וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶ֖יהָ וַתַּ֥הַר לֽוֹ׃

38:18 And he said, “What pledge shall I give you?” She replied, “Your seal and cord, and the staff which you carry.” So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she conceived by him.

38:18 And he said: ‘What pledge shall I give thee?’ And she said: ‘Thy signet and thy cord, and thy staff that is in thy hand.’ And he gave them to her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

ל"ח:י"ח וַאֲמַר מָה מַשְׁכּוֹנָא דִּי אֶתֵּן לָךְ וַאֲמֶרֶת עִזְקְתָךְ וְשׁוֹשִׁפָּךְ וְחוּטְרָךְ דִּי בִידָךְ וִיהַב לַהּ וְעַל לְוָתַהּ וְעַדִּיאַת לֵיהּ:

חתמך ופתילך. עִזְקְתָךְ וְשׁוֹשִׁיפָּךְ – טַבַּעַת שֶׁאַתָה חוֹתֵם בָּהּ וְשִׂמְלָתְךָ שֶׁאַתָּה מִתְכַּסֶּה בָהּ:

ותהר לו. גִּבּוֹרִים כַּיּוֹצֵא בוֹ, צַדִּיקִים כַּיּוֹצֵא בוֹ.

ל"ח:י"ט וַתָּ֣קָם וַתֵּ֔לֶךְ וַתָּ֥סַר צְעִיפָ֖הּ מֵעָלֶ֑יהָ וַתִּלְבַּ֖שׁ בִּגְדֵ֥י אַלְמְנוּתָֽהּ׃

38:19 Then she went on her way. She took off her veil and again put on her widow’s garb.

38:19 And she arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

ל"ח:י"ט וְקָמַת וַאֲזָלַת וְאַעְדִּיאַת עֵיפַהּ מִנַּהּ וּלְבֵישַׁת לְבוּשֵׁי אַרְמְלוּתַהּ:

ל"ח:כ׳ וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יְהוּדָ֜ה אֶת־גְּדִ֣י הָֽעִזִּ֗ים בְּיַד֙ רֵעֵ֣הוּ הָֽעֲדֻלָּמִ֔י לָקַ֥חַת הָעֵרָב֖וֹן מִיַּ֣ד הָאִשָּׁ֑ה וְלֹ֖א מְצָאָֽהּ׃

38:20 Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adullamite, to redeem the pledge from the woman; but he could not find her.

38:20 And Judah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand; but he found her not.

ל"ח:כ׳ וְשַׁדַּר יְהוּדָה יָת גַּדְיָא בַר עִזֵּי בִּידָא רַחֲמֵיהּ עֲדֻלָּמָאָה לְמִסַּב מַשְׁכּוֹנָא מִידָא דְאִתְּתָא וְלָא אַשְׁכְּחַהּ:

ל"ח:כ"א וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל אֶת־אַנְשֵׁ֤י מְקֹמָהּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַיֵּ֧ה הַקְּדֵשָׁ֛ה הִ֥וא בָעֵינַ֖יִם עַל־הַדָּ֑רֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ לֹא־הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה קְדֵשָֽׁה׃

38:21 He inquired of the people of that town, “Where is the cult prostitute, the one at Enaim, by the road?” But they said, “There has been no prostitute here.”

38:21 Then he asked the men of her place, saying: ‘Where is the harlot, that was at Enaim by the wayside?’ And they said: ‘There hath been no harlot here.’

ל"ח:כ"א וּשְׁאִיל יָת אֲנָשֵׁי אַתְרַהּ לְמֵימַר אָן מְקַדִּשְׁתָּא הִיא בְעַיְנִין עַל אָרְחָא וַאֲמָרוּ לֵית הָכָא מְקַדִּשְׁתָּא:

הקדשה. מְקֻדֶּשֶׁת וּמְזֻמֶּנֶת לִזְנוּת:

ל"ח:כ"ב וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙ אֶל־יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לֹ֣א מְצָאתִ֑יהָ וְגַ֨ם אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ אָֽמְר֔וּ לֹא־הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה קְדֵשָֽׁה׃

38:22 So he returned to Judah and said, “I could not find her; moreover, the townspeople said: There has been no prostitute here.”

38:22 And he returned to Judah, and said: ‘I have not found her; and also the men of the place said: There hath been no harlot here.’

ל"ח:כ"ב וְתָב לְוַת יְהוּדָה וַאֲמַר לָא אַשְׁכְּחִיתַהּ וְאַף אֲנָשֵׁי אַתְרָא אֲמָרוּ לֵית הָכָא מְקַדִּשְׁתָּא:

ל"ח:כ"ג וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ תִּֽקַּֽח־לָ֔הּ פֶּ֖ן נִהְיֶ֣ה לָב֑וּז הִנֵּ֤ה שָׁלַ֙חְתִּי֙ הַגְּדִ֣י הַזֶּ֔ה וְאַתָּ֖ה לֹ֥א מְצָאתָֽהּ׃

38:23 Judah said, “Let her keep them, lest we become a laughingstock. I did send her this kid, but you did not find her.”

38:23 And Judah said: ‘Let her take it, lest we be put to shame; behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.’

ל"ח:כ"ג וַאֲמַר יְהוּדָה תִּסַּב לַהּ דִּילְמָא נְהֵי לְחוֹךְ הָא שַׁדָּרִית גַּדְיָא הָדֵין וְאַתְּ לָא אַשְׁכְּחִתַּהּ:

תקח לה. יִהְיֶה שֶׁלָּהּ מַה שְּׁבְּיָדָהּ:

פן נהיה לבוז. אִם תְּבַקְּשֶׁנָּה עוֹד יִתְפַּרְסֵם הַדָּבָר וְיִהְיֶה גְּנַאי, כִּי מֶה עָלַי לַעֲשׂוֹת עוֹד לְאַמֵּת דְּבָרַי:

הנה שלחתי הגדי הזה. לְפִי שֶׁרִמָּה יְהוּדָה אֶת אָבִיו בִּגְדִי עִזִּים שֶׁהִטְבִּיל כְּתֹנֶת יוֹסֵף בְּדָמוֹ, רִמּוּהוּ גַּם הוּא בִּגְדִי עִזִּים (בראשית רבה):

ל"ח:כ"ד וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כְּמִשְׁלֹ֣שׁ חֳדָשִׁ֗ים וַיֻּגַּ֨ד לִֽיהוּדָ֤ה לֵֽאמֹר֙ זָֽנְתָה֙ תָּמָ֣ר כַּלָּתֶ֔ךָ וְגַ֛ם הִנֵּ֥ה הָרָ֖ה לִזְנוּנִ֑ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָ֔ה הוֹצִיא֖וּהָ וְתִשָּׂרֵֽף׃

38:24 About three months later, Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has played the harlot; in fact, she is with child by harlotry.” “Bring her out,” said Judah, “and let her be burned.”

38:24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying: ‘Tamar thy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and moreover, behold, she is with child by harlotry.’ And Judah said: ‘Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.’

ל"ח:כ"ד וַהֲוָה כִּתְלָתוּת יַרְחַיָּא וְאִתְחַוָּא לִיהוּדָה לְמֵימַר זַנִּיאַת תָּמָר כַּלְּתָךְ וְאַף הָא מַעְדְּיָא לִזְנוּתָא וַאֲמַר יְהוּדָה אַפְּקוּהַ וְתִתּוֹקָד:

כמשלש חדשים. רֻבּוֹ שֶׁל רִאשׁוֹן וְרֻבּוֹ שֶׁל אַחֲרוֹן וְאֶמְצָעִי שָׁלֵם (נדה מ"נ). וּלְשׁוֹן כְּמִשְׁלֹשׁ חֳדָשִׁים כְּהִשְׁתַּלֵּשׁ הַחֳדָשִׁים, כְּמוֹ וּמִשְׁלֹחַ מָנוֹת (אסתר ט'), מִשְׁלוֹחַ יָדָם (ישעיהו י"א), וְכֵן תִּרְגֵּם אֻנְקְלוֹס כִּתְלָתוּת יַרְחַיָּא:

הרה לזנונים. שֵׁם דָּבָר, מְעֻבֶּרֶת כְּמוֹ אִשָּׁה הָרָה, וּכְמוֹ בָּרָה כַּחַמָּה:

ותשרף. אָמַר אֶפְרַיִם מִקְשָׁאָה מִשּׁוּם רַבִּי מֵאִיר, בִּתּוֹ שֶׁל שֵׁם הָיְתָה, שֶׁהוּא כֹהֵן, לְפִיכָךְ דָּנוּהָ בִשְׂרֵפָה:

ל"ח:כ"ה הִ֣וא מוּצֵ֗את וְהִ֨יא שָׁלְחָ֤ה אֶל־חָמִ֙יהָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְאִישׁ֙ אֲשֶׁר־אֵ֣לֶּה לּ֔וֹ אָנֹכִ֖י הָרָ֑ה וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַכֶּר־נָ֔א לְמִ֞י הַחֹתֶ֧מֶת וְהַפְּתִילִ֛ים וְהַמַּטֶּ֖ה הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

38:25 As she was being brought out, she sent this message to her father-in-law, “I am with child by the man to whom these belong.” And she added, “Examine these: whose seal and cord and staff are these?”

38:25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying: ‘By the man, whose these are, am I with child’; and she said: ‘Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and the cords, and the staff.’

ל"ח:כ"ה הִיא מִתַּפְּקָא וְהִיא שְׁלָחַת לַחֲמוּהָא לְמֵימַר לִגְבַר דִּי אִלֵּין דִּילֵיהּ מִנֵּיהּ אֲנָא מַעְדְּיָא וַאֲמֶרֶת אִשְׁתְּמוֹדַע כְּעַן לְמָן עִזְקְתָא וְשׁוֹשִׁפָּא וְחוּטְרָא הָאִלֵּין:

הוא מוצאת. לְהִשָּׂרֵף:

והיא שלחה אל חמיה. לֹא רָצְתָה לְהַלְבִּין פָּנָיו וְלוֹמַר מִמְּךָ אֲנִי מְעֻבֶּרֶת, אֶלָּא לְאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר אֵלֶּה לּוֹ, אָמְרָה אִם יוֹדֶה יוֹדֶה מֵעַצְמוֹ, וְאִם לָאו, יִשְׂרְפוּנִי, וְאַל אַלְבִּין פָּנָיו. מִכָּאן אָמְרוּ נוֹחַ לוֹ לָאָדָם שֶׁיַּפִּילוּהוּ לְכִבְשַׁן הָאֵשׁ וְאַל יַלְבִּין פְּנֵי חֲבֵרוֹ בָּרַבִּים:

הכר נא. אֵין נָא אֶלָּא לְשׁוֹן בַּקָּשָׁה – הַכֵּר נָא בוֹרַאֲךָ, וְאַל תְּאַבֵּד שָׁלֹשׁ נְפָשׁוֹת:

ל"ח:כ"ו וַיַּכֵּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ צָֽדְקָ֣ה מִמֶּ֔נִּי כִּֽי־עַל־כֵּ֥ן לֹא־נְתַתִּ֖יהָ לְשֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֑י וְלֹֽא־יָסַ֥ף ע֖וֹד לְדַעְתָּֽה׃

38:26 Judah recognized them, and said, “She is more in the right than I, inasmuch as I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he was not intimate with her again.

38:26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said: ‘She is more righteous than I; forasmuch as I gave her not to Shelah my son.’ And he knew her again no more.

ל"ח:כ"ו וְאִשְׁתְּמוֹדַע יְהוּדָה וַאֲמַר זַכָּאָה מִנִּי מַעְדְּיָא אֲרֵי עַל כֵּן לָא יְהָבִתַּהּ לְשֵׁלָה בְרִי וְלָא אוֹסִיף עוֹד לְמִידְעַהּ:

צדקה. בִּדְבָרֶיהָ:

ממני. הִיא מְעֻבֶּרֶת. וְרַבּוֹתֵינוּ ז"ל דָּרְשׁוּ שֶׁיָּצְאָה בַת קוֹל וְאָמְרָה מִמֶּנִּי וּמֵאִתִּי יָצְאוּ הַדְּבָרִים, לְפִי שֶׁהָיְתָה צְנוּעָה בְּבֵית חָמִיהָ, גָּזַרְתִּי שֶׁיֵּצְאוּ מִמֶּנָּה מְלָכִים, וּמִשֵּׁבֶט יְהוּדָה גָּזַרְתִּי לְהַעֲמִיד מְלָכִים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל:

כי על כן לא נתתיה. כִּי בְּדִין עָשְׂתָה, עַל אֲשֶׁר לֹא נְתַתִּיהָ לְשֵׁלָה בְנִי:

ולא יסף עוד. יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים לֹא הוֹסִיף, וְיֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים לֹא פָסַק. וַחֲבֵרוֹ גַּבֵּי אֶלְדָּד וּמֵידָד, וְלֹא יָסָפוּ, וּמְתַרְגְּמִינָן וְלָא פְּסָקוּ:

ל"ח:כ"ז וַיְהִ֖י בְּעֵ֣ת לִדְתָּ֑הּ וְהִנֵּ֥ה תְאוֹמִ֖ים בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃

38:27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb!

38:27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

ל"ח:כ"ז וַהֲוָה בְּעִדַּן דְּמֵילְדַהּ וְהָא תְיוֹמִין בִּמְעָהָא:

בעת לדתה. וּבְרִבְקָה הוּא אוֹמֵר וַיִּמְלְאוּ יָמֶיהָ לָלֶדֶת? לְהַלָּן לִמְלֵאִים וְכָאן לַחֲסֵרִים:

והנה תאומים. מָלֵא, וּלְהַלָּן תּוֹמִם חָסֵר, לְפִי שֶׁהָאֶחָד רָשָׁע, אֲבָל אֵלּוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם צַדִּיקִים:

ל"ח:כ"ח וַיְהִ֥י בְלִדְתָּ֖הּ וַיִּתֶּן־יָ֑ד וַתִּקַּ֣ח הַמְיַלֶּ֗דֶת וַתִּקְשֹׁ֨ר עַל־יָד֤וֹ שָׁנִי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר זֶ֖ה יָצָ֥א רִאשֹׁנָֽה׃

38:28 While she was in labor, one of them put out his hand, and the midwife tied a crimson thread on that hand, to signify: This one came out first.

38:28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that one put out a hand; and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying: ‘This came out first.’

ל"ח:כ"ח וַהֲוָה בְּמֵילְדַהּ וִיהַב יְדָא וּנְסִיבַת חַיְתָא וּקְטָרַת עַל יְדֵיהּ זְהוֹרִיתָא לְמֵימַר דֵּין נְפַק קַדְמָאָה:

ויתן יד. הוֹצִיא הָאֶחָד יָדוֹ לַחוּץ, וּלְאַחַר שֶׁקָּשְׁרָה עַל יָדוֹ הַשָּׁנִי הֶחֱזִירָהּ:

ל"ח:כ"ט וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כְּמֵשִׁ֣יב יָד֗וֹ וְהִנֵּה֙ יָצָ֣א אָחִ֔יו וַתֹּ֕אמֶר מַה־פָּרַ֖צְתָּ עָלֶ֣יךָ פָּ֑רֶץ וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ פָּֽרֶץ׃

38:29 But just then he drew back his hand, and out came his brother; and she said, “What a breacheHeb. pereṣ you have made for yourself!” So he was named Perez.

38:29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold his brother came out; and she said: ‘Wherefore hast thou made a breach for thyself?’ Therefore his name was called Perez.

ל"ח:כ"ט וַהֲוָה כַּד אֲתֵיב יְדֵיהּ וְהָא נְפַק אֲחוּהִי וַאֲמֶרֶת מָה תְקוֹף סַגִּי עֲלָךְ לְמִתְקָף וּקְרָא שְׁמֵיהּ פָּרֶץ:

פרצת. חָזַקְתָּ עָלֶיךָ חֹזֶק:

ל"ח:ל׳ וְאַחַר֙ יָצָ֣א אָחִ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־יָד֖וֹ הַשָּׁנִ֑י וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ זָֽרַח׃ (ס)

38:30 Afterward his brother came out, on whose hand was the crimson thread; he was named Zerah.fI.e., “brightness,” perhaps alluding to the crimson thread.

38:30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand; and his name was called Zerah.

ל"ח:ל׳ וּבָתַר כֵּן נְפַק אֲחוּהִי דִּי עַל יְדֵיהּ זְהוֹרִיתָא וּקְרָא שְׁמֵיהּ זָרַח:

אשר על ידו השני. אַרְבַּע יָדוֹת כְּתוּבוֹת כָּאן כְּנֶגֶד אַרְבָּעָה חֲרָמִים שֶׁמָּעַל עָכָן שֶׁיָּצָא מִמֶּנּוּ. וְיֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים כְּנֶגֶד אַרְבָּעָה דְבָרִים שֶׁלָּקַח, אַדֶּרֶת שִׁנְעָר וּשְׁתֵּי חֲתִיכוֹת כֶּסֶף שֶׁל מָאתַיִם שְׁקָלִים וּלְשׁוֹן זָהָב, בְּרֵאשִׁית רַבָּה:

ויקרא שמו זרח. עַל שֵׁם זְרִיחַת מַרְאִית הַשָּׁנִי:
