Genesis 37:23–37:36
ל"ז:כ"ג וַֽיְהִ֕י כַּֽאֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥א יוֹסֵ֖ף אֶל־אֶחָ֑יו וַיַּפְשִׁ֤יטוּ אֶת־יוֹסֵף֙ אֶת־כֻּתָּנְתּ֔וֹ אֶת־כְּתֹ֥נֶת הַפַּסִּ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָלָֽיו׃
37:23 When Joseph came up to his brothers, they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the ornamented tunic that he was wearing,
37:23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colours that was on him;
ל"ז:כ"ג וַהֲוָה כַּד עַל יוֹסֵף לְוַת אֲחוּהִי וְאַשְׁלָחוּ יָת יוֹסֵף יָת כִּתּוּנֵיהּ יָת כִּתּוּנָא דְפַסֵּי דִּי עֲלוֹהִי:
ל"ז:כ"ד וַיִּ֨קָּחֻ֔הוּ וַיַּשְׁלִ֥כוּ אֹת֖וֹ הַבֹּ֑רָה וְהַבּ֣וֹר רֵ֔ק אֵ֥ין בּ֖וֹ מָֽיִם׃
37:24 and took him and cast him into the pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.
37:24 and they took him, and cast him into the pit—and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
ל"ז:כ"ד וְנָסְבוּהִי וּרְמוֹ יָתֵיהּ לְגֻבָּא וְגֻבָּא רֵיקָא לֵית בֵּיהּ מַיָּא:
ל"ז:כ"ה וַיֵּשְׁבוּ֮ לֶֽאֱכָל־לֶחֶם֒ וַיִּשְׂא֤וּ עֵֽינֵיהֶם֙ וַיִּרְא֔וּ וְהִנֵּה֙ אֹרְחַ֣ת יִשְׁמְעֵאלִ֔ים בָּאָ֖ה מִגִּלְעָ֑ד וּגְמַלֵּיהֶ֣ם נֹֽשְׂאִ֗ים נְכֹאת֙ וּצְרִ֣י וָלֹ֔ט הוֹלְכִ֖ים לְהוֹרִ֥יד מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃
37:25 Then they sat down to a meal. Looking up, they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, their camels bearing gum, balm, and ladanum to be taken to Egypt.
37:25 And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites came from Gilead, with their camels bearing spicery and balm and ladanum, going to carry it down to Egypt.
ל"ז:כ"ה וְאַסְחָרוּ לְמֵיכַל לַחְמָא וּזְקָפוּ עֵינֵיהוֹן וַחֲזוֹ וְהָא שְׁיָרַת עֲרָבָאֵי אָתְיָא מִגִּלְעָד וְגַמְלֵיהוֹן טְעִינִין שְׁעַף וּקְטַף וּלְטוֹם אָזְלִין לַאֲחָתָא לְמִצְרָיִם:
צרי. שָׂרָף הַנּוֹטֵף מֵעֲצֵי הַקְּטָף, וְהוּא נָטָף הַנִּמְנֶה עִם סַמָּנֵי הַקְּטֹרֶת:
ל"ז:כ"ו וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוּדָ֖ה אֶל־אֶחָ֑יו מַה־בֶּ֗צַע כִּ֤י נַהֲרֹג֙ אֶת־אָחִ֔ינוּ וְכִסִּ֖ינוּ אֶת־דָּמֽוֹ׃
37:26 Then Judah said to his brothers, “What do we gain by killing our brother and covering up his blood?
37:26 And Judah said unto his brethren: ‘What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood?
ל"ז:כ"ו וַאֲמַר יְהוּדָה לַאֲחוֹהִי מָה מָמוֹן נִתְהֲנֵי לָנָא אֲרֵי נִקְטוֹל יָת אָחוּנָא וּנְכַסֵּי עַל דְּמֵיהּ:
ל"ז:כ"ז לְכ֞וּ וְנִמְכְּרֶ֣נּוּ לַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֗ים וְיָדֵ֙נוּ֙ אַל־תְּהִי־ב֔וֹ כִּֽי־אָחִ֥ינוּ בְשָׂרֵ֖נוּ ה֑וּא וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֖וּ אֶחָֽיו׃
37:27 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, but let us not do away with him ourselves. After all, he is our brother, our own flesh.” His brothers agreed.
37:27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh.’ And his brethren hearkened unto him.
ל"ז:כ"ז אֱתוּ וּנְזַבְּנִנֵּיהּ לַעֲרָבָאֵי וִידָנָא לָא תְהֵי בֵיהּ אֲרֵי אֲחוּנָא בִסְרָנָא הוּא וְקַבִּילוּ מִנֵּיהּ אֲחוֹהִי:
ל"ז:כ"ח וַיַּֽעַבְרוּ֩ אֲנָשִׁ֨ים מִדְיָנִ֜ים סֹֽחֲרִ֗ים וַֽיִּמְשְׁכוּ֙ וַיַּֽעֲל֤וּ אֶת־יוֹסֵף֙ מִן־הַבּ֔וֹר וַיִּמְכְּר֧וּ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֛ף לַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֖ים בְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים כָּ֑סֶף וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֖ף מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃
37:28 When Midianite traders passed by, they pulled Joseph up out of the pit. They sold Joseph for twenty pieces of silver to the Ishmaelites, who brought Joseph to Egypt.
37:28 And there passed by Midianites, merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt.
ל"ז:כ"ח וַעֲבָרוּ גַבְרֵי מִדְיָנָאֵי תַּגָּרֵי וּנְגִידוּ וְאַסִּיקוּ יָת יוֹסֵף מִן גֻּבָּא וְזַבִּינוּ יָת יוֹסֵף לַעֲרָבָאֵי בְּעֶסְרִין כְּסָף וְאַיְתִיוּ יָת יוֹסֵף לְמִצְרָיִם:
ל"ז:כ"ט וַיָּ֤שָׁב רְאוּבֵן֙ אֶל־הַבּ֔וֹר וְהִנֵּ֥ה אֵין־יוֹסֵ֖ף בַּבּ֑וֹר וַיִּקְרַ֖ע אֶת־בְּגָדָֽיו׃
37:29 When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he rent his clothes.
37:29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
ל"ז:כ"ט וְתָב רְאוּבֵן לְגֻבָּא וְהָא לֵית יוֹסֵף בְּגֻבָּא וּבְזַע יָת לְבוּשׁוֹהִי:
ל"ז:ל׳ וַיָּ֥שָׁב אֶל־אֶחָ֖יו וַיֹּאמַ֑ר הַיֶּ֣לֶד אֵינֶ֔נּוּ וַאֲנִ֖י אָ֥נָה אֲנִי־בָֽא׃
37:30 Returning to his brothers, he said, “The boy is gone! Now, what am I to do?”
37:30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said: ‘The child is not; and as for me, whither shall I go?’
ל"ז:ל׳ וְתָב לְוַת אֲחוֹהִי וַאֲמָר עוּלֵימָא לֵיתוֹהִי וַאֲנָא לְאָן אֲנָא אָתֵי:
ל"ז:ל"א וַיִּקְח֖וּ אֶת־כְּתֹ֣נֶת יוֹסֵ֑ף וַֽיִּשְׁחֲטוּ֙ שְׂעִ֣יר עִזִּ֔ים וַיִּטְבְּל֥וּ אֶת־הַכֻּתֹּ֖נֶת בַּדָּֽם׃
37:31 Then they took Joseph’s tunic, slaughtered a kid, and dipped the tunic in the blood.
37:31 And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a he-goat, and dipped the coat in the blood;
ל"ז:ל"א וּנְסִיבוּ יָת כִּתּוּנָא דְיוֹסֵף וּנְכִיסוּ צְפִיר בַּר עִזֵּי וּטְבָלוּ יָת כִּתּוּנָא בִּדְמָא:
ל"ז:ל"ב וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֞וּ אֶת־כְּתֹ֣נֶת הַפַּסִּ֗ים וַיָּבִ֙יאוּ֙ אֶל־אֲבִיהֶ֔ם וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ זֹ֣את מָצָ֑אנוּ הַכֶּר־נָ֗א הַכְּתֹ֧נֶת בִּנְךָ֛ הִ֖וא אִם־לֹֽא׃
37:32 They had the ornamented tunic taken to their father, and they said, “We found this. Please examine it; is it your son’s tunic or not?”
37:32 and they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said: ‘This have we found. Know now whether it is thy son’s coat or not.’
ל"ז:ל"ב וְשַׁלָּחוּ יָת כִּתּוּנָא דְפַסֵּי וְאַיְתִיוּ לְוַת אֲבוּהוֹן וַאֲמָרוּ דָּא אַשְׁכַּחְנָא אִשְׁתְּמוֹדַע כְּעַן הֲכִתּוּנָא דִבְרָךְ הִיא אִם לָא:
ל"ז:ל"ג וַיַּכִּירָ֤הּ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ כְּתֹ֣נֶת בְּנִ֔י חַיָּ֥ה רָעָ֖ה אֲכָלָ֑תְהוּ טָרֹ֥ף טֹרַ֖ף יוֹסֵֽף׃
37:33 He recognized it, and said, “My son’s tunic! A savage beast devoured him! Joseph was torn by a beast!”
37:33 And he knew it, and said: ‘It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.’
ל"ז:ל"ג וְאִשְׁתְּמוֹדְעַהּ וַאֲמַר כִּתּוּנָא דִבְרִי חַיְתָא בִישְׁתָא אֲכָלַתֵּיהּ מִקְטַל קְטִיל יוֹסֵף:
ל"ז:ל"ד וַיִּקְרַ֤ע יַעֲקֹב֙ שִׂמְלֹתָ֔יו וַיָּ֥שֶׂם שַׂ֖ק בְּמָתְנָ֑יו וַיִּתְאַבֵּ֥ל עַל־בְּנ֖וֹ יָמִ֥ים רַבִּֽים׃
37:34 Jacob rent his clothes, put sackcloth on his loins, and observed mourning for his son many days.
37:34 And Jacob rent his garments, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
ל"ז:ל"ד וּבְזַע יַעֲקֹב לְבוּשׁוֹהִי וַאֲסַר שַׂקָּא בְּחַרְצֵיהּ וְאִתְאַבַּל עַל בְּרֵיהּ יוֹמִין סַגִּיאִין:
ל"ז:ל"ה וַיָּקֻמוּ֩ כָל־בָּנָ֨יו וְכָל־בְּנֹתָ֜יו לְנַחֲמ֗וֹ וַיְמָאֵן֙ לְהִתְנַחֵ֔ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר כִּֽי־אֵרֵ֧ד אֶל־בְּנִ֛י אָבֵ֖ל שְׁאֹ֑לָה וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ אֹת֖וֹ אָבִֽיו׃
37:35 All his sons and daughters sought to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, saying, “No, I will go down mourning to my son in Sheol.” Thus his father bewailed him.
37:35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said: ‘Nay, but I will go down to the grave to my son mourning.’ And his father wept for him.
ל"ז:ל"ה וְקָמוּ כָל בְּנוֹהִי וְכָל בְּנָתֵיהּ לְנַחֲמוּתֵיהּ וְסָרֵיב לְקַבָּלָא תַנְחוּמִין וַאֲמַר אֲרֵי אֵחוֹת לְוַת (עַל) בְּרִי כַּד אֲבֵילָא לִשְׁאוֹל וּבְכָא יָתֵיהּ אֲבוּהִי:
ל"ז:ל"ו וְהַ֨מְּדָנִ֔ים מָכְר֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ אֶל־מִצְרָ֑יִם לְפֽוֹטִיפַר֙ סְרִ֣יס פַּרְעֹ֔ה שַׂ֖ר הַטַּבָּחִֽים׃ (פ)
37:36 The Midianites,bHeb. “Medanites.” meanwhile, sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, a courtier of Pharaoh and his chief steward.
37:36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard.
ל"ז:ל"ו וּמִדְיָנָאֵי זַבִּינוּ יָתֵיהּ לְמִצְרָיִם לְפוֹטִיפַר רַבָּא דְפַרְעֹה רַב קָטוֹלַיָּא:
