אָ֣ז יַבְדִּ֤יל מֹשֶׁה֙ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ עָרִ֔ים בְּעֵ֖בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן מִזְרְחָ֖ה שָֽׁמֶשׁ׃

Then Moses set aside three cities on the east side of the Jordan

Then Moses separated three cities beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising;
ד׳:מ"א
בְּכֵן יַפְרֵשׁ משֶׁה תְּלַת קִרְוִין בְּעִבְרָא דְּיַרְדְּנָא מִדְנַח שִׁמְשָׁא:
אז יבדיל. נָתַן לֵב לִהְיוֹת חָרֵד לַדָּבָר שֶׁיַּבְדִּילֵם, וְאַעַ"פִּ שֶׁאֵינָן קוֹלְטוֹת עַד שֶׁיֻּבְדְּלוּ אוֹתָן שֶׁבְּאֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן, אָמַר מֹשֶׁה מִצְוָה שֶׁאֶפְשָׁר לְקַיְּמָהּ אֲקַיְּמֶנָּה (מכות י'):
בעבר הירדן מזרחה שמש. בְּאוֹתוֹ עֵבֶר שֶׁבְּמִזְרָחוֹ שֶׁל יַרְדֵּן:
מזרחה שמש. לְפִי שֶׁהוּא דָּבוּק, נְקוּדָה רֵי"שׁ בַּחֲטָף, מִזְרָח שֶׁל שֶׁמֶשׁ – מְקוֹם זְרִיחַת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ:
ד׳:מ"ב
לָנֻ֨ס שָׁ֜מָּה רוֹצֵ֗חַ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִרְצַ֤ח אֶת־רֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ בִּבְלִי־דַ֔עַת וְה֛וּא לֹא־שֹׂנֵ֥א ל֖וֹ מִתְּמ֣וֹל שִׁלְשׁ֑וֹם וְנָ֗ס אֶל־אַחַ֛ת מִן־הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖ל וָחָֽי׃

to which a manslayer could escape, one who unwittingly slew a fellow man without having been his enemy in the past; he could flee to one of these cities and live:

that the manslayer might flee thither, that slayeth his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in time past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:

לְמֵעִירוֹק תַּמָּן קָטוֹלָא דִּי יִקְטוֹל יָת חַבְרֵיהּ בְּלָא מַנְדְּעֵי וְהוּא לָא סָנֵי לֵיהּ מֵאִתְמַלֵּי וּמִדְּקַמּוֹהִי וְיֵעִרוֹק לְחַד מִן קִרְוַיָּא הָאִלֵּין וְיִתְקַיָּם:

אֶת־בֶּ֧צֶר בַּמִּדְבָּ֛ר בְּאֶ֥רֶץ הַמִּישֹׁ֖ר לָרֻֽאוּבֵנִ֑י וְאֶת־רָאמֹ֤ת בַּגִּלְעָד֙ לַגָּדִ֔י וְאֶת־גּוֹלָ֥ן בַּבָּשָׁ֖ן לַֽמְנַשִּֽׁי׃

Bezer, in the wilderness in the Tableland, belonging to the Reubenites; Ramoth, in Gilead, belonging to the Gadites; and Golan, in Bashan, belonging to the Manassites.

יָת בֶּצֶר בְּמַדְבְּרָא בְּאַרְעָא מֵישְׁרָא לְשִׁבְטָא דִרְאוּבֵן וְיָת רָאמוֹת בַּגִּלְעָד לְשִׁבְטָא דְגָד וְיָת גּוֹלָן בְּמַתְנָן לְשִׁבְטָא דִמְנַשֶּׁה:
ד׳:מ"ד
וְזֹ֖את הַתּוֹרָ֑ה אֲשֶׁר־שָׂ֣ם מֹשֶׁ֔ה לִפְנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

This is the Teaching that Moses set before the Israelites:

And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel;

וְדָא אוֹרַיְתָא דִּי סַדַּר משֶׁה קֳדָם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל:
וזאת התורה. זוֹ שֶׁהוּא עָתִיד לְסַדֵּר אַחַר פָּרָשָׁה זוֹ:

אֵ֚לֶּה הָֽעֵדֹ֔ת וְהַֽחֻקִּ֖ים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֑ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּצֵאתָ֖ם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃

these are the decrees, laws, and rules that Moses addressed to the people of Israel, after they had left Egypt,

these are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which Moses spoke unto the children of Israel, when they came forth out of Egypt;

אִלֵּין סָהֶדְוָתָא וּקְיָמַיָּא וְדִינַיָּא דִּי מַלִּיל משֶׁה עִם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּמִפָּקְהוֹן מִמִּצְרָיִם:
אלה העדת, אשר דבר. הֵם הֵם אֲשֶׁר דִּבֵּר בְּצֵאתָם מִמִּצְרַיִם, חָזַר וּשְׁנָאָהּ לָהֶם בְּעַרְבוֹת מוֹאָב:
ד׳:מ"ו
בְּעֵ֨בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֜ן בַּגַּ֗יְא מ֚וּל בֵּ֣ית פְּע֔וֹר בְּאֶ֗רֶץ סִיחֹן֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר יוֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּחֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִכָּ֤ה מֹשֶׁה֙ וּבְנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּצֵאתָ֖ם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃

beyond the Jordan, in the valley at Beth-peor, in the land of King Sihon of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, whom Moses and the Israelites defeated after they had left Egypt.

בְּעִבְרָא דְיַרְדְּנָא בְּחֵילָתָא לָקֳבֵל בֵּית פְּעוֹר בְּאַרְעָא דְּסִיחֹן מַלְכָּא דֶאֱמֹרָאָה דִּי יָתֵב בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן דִּי מְחָא משֶׁה וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּמִפָּקְהוֹן מִמִּצְרָיִם:

וַיִּֽירְשׁ֨וּ אֶת־אַרְצ֜וֹ וְאֶת־אֶ֣רֶץ ׀ ע֣וֹג מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָׁ֗ן שְׁנֵי֙ מַלְכֵ֣י הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּעֵ֣בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן מִזְרַ֖ח שָֽׁמֶשׁ׃

They had taken possession of his country and that of King Og of Bashan—the two kings of the Amorites—which were on the east side of the Jordan

and they took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising;

וִירִיתוּ יָת אַרְעֵיהּ וְיָת אַרְעָא דְּעוֹג מַלְכָּא דְמַתְנָן תְּרֵין מַלְכֵי אֱמֹרָאָה דִּי בְּעִבְרָא דְיַרְדְּנָא מִדְנַח שִׁמְשָׁא:
אשר בעבר הירדן. שֶׁהוּא בַּמִּזְרָח, שֶׁהָעֵבֶר הַשֵּׁנִי הָיָה בַּמַּעֲרָב:

מֵעֲרֹעֵ֞ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר עַל־שְׂפַת־נַ֧חַל אַרְנֹ֛ן וְעַד־הַ֥ר שִׂיאֹ֖ן ה֥וּא חֶרְמֽוֹן׃

from Aroer on the banks of the wadi Arnon, as far as Mount Sion,cCf. “Sirion,” 3.9. that is, Hermon;

from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, even unto mount Sion—the same is Hermon—

מֵעֲרֹעֵר דִּי עַל כֵּיף נַחֲלָא דְאַרְנֹן וְעַד טוּרָא דְשִׂיאֹן הוּא חֶרְמוֹן:
ד׳:מ"ט
וְכָל־הָ֨עֲרָבָ֜ה עֵ֤בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ מִזְרָ֔חָה וְעַ֖ד יָ֣ם הָעֲרָבָ֑ה תַּ֖חַת אַשְׁדֹּ֥ת הַפִּסְגָּֽה׃ (פ)

also the whole Arabah on the east side of the Jordan, as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah.

and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

וְכָל מֵישְׁרָא עִבְרָא דְיַרְדְּנָא לְמָדִינְחָא וְעַד יַמָּא דְמֵישְׁרָא תְּחוֹת מַשְׁפַּךְ מְרָמָתָא:
