מ׳:כ"ח וַיָּ֛שֶׂם אֶת־מָסַ֥ךְ הַפֶּ֖תַח לַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

40:28 Then he put up the screen for the entrance of the Tabernacle.

מ׳:כ"ט וְאֵת֙ מִזְבַּ֣ח הָעֹלָ֔ה שָׂ֕ם פֶּ֖תַח מִשְׁכַּ֣ן אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֑ד וַיַּ֣עַל עָלָ֗יו אֶת־הָעֹלָה֙ וְאֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (ס)

40:29 At the entrance of the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting he placed the altar of burnt offering. On it he offered up the burnt offering and the meal offering—as the LORD had commanded Moses.

40:29 And the altar of burnt-offering he set at the door of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, and offered upon it the burnt-offering and the meal-offering; as the LORD commanded Moses.

מ׳:כ"ט וְיָת מַדְבְּחָא דַעֲלָתָא שַׁוִּי בִּתְרַע מַשְׁכְּנָא מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא וְאַסֵּק עֲלוֹהִי יָת עֲלָתָא וְיָת מִנְחָתָא כְּמָא דִי פַּקִּיד יְיָ יָת משֶׁה:

ויעל עליו וגו'. אַף בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁמִינִי לַמִּלּוּאִים, שֶׁהוּא יוֹם הֲקָמַת הַמִּשְׁכָּן, שִׁמֵּשׁ מֹשֶׁה וְהִקְרִיב קָרְבְּנוֹת צִבּוּר, חוּץ מֵאוֹתָן שֶׁנִּצְטַוּוּ בוֹ בַיּוֹם, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר קְרַב אֶל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ וְגוֹמֵר (ויקרא ט'):

את העלה. עוֹלַת הַתָּמִיד:

ואת המנחה. מִנְחַת נְסָכִים שֶׁל תָּמִיד, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר וְעִשָּׂרֹן סֹלֶת בָּלוּל בְּשֶׁמֶן וְגוֹמֵר (שמות כ"ט):

מ׳:ל׳ וַיָּ֙שֶׂם֙ אֶת־הַכִּיֹּ֔ר בֵּֽין־אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵ֖ד וּבֵ֣ין הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וַיִּתֵּ֥ן שָׁ֛מָּה מַ֖יִם לְרָחְצָֽה׃

40:30 He placed the laver between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it for washing.

40:30 And he set the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water therein, wherewith to wash;

מ׳:ל׳ וְשַׁוִּי יָת כִּיוֹרָא בֵּין מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא וּבֵין מַדְבְּחָא וִיהַב תַּמָּן מַיָּא לְקִדּוּשׁ:

מ׳:ל"א וְרָחֲצ֣וּ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן וּבָנָ֑יו אֶת־יְדֵיהֶ֖ם וְאֶת־רַגְלֵיהֶֽם׃

40:31 From it Moses and Aaron and his sons would wash their hands and feet;

40:31 that Moses and Aaron and his sons might wash their hands and their feet thereat;

מ׳:ל"א וִיקַדְּשׁוּן מִנֵּיהּ משֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן וּבְנוֹהִי יָת יְדֵיהוֹן וְיָת רַגְלֵיהוֹן:

ורחצו ממנו משה ואהרן. יוֹם שְׁמִינִי לַמִּלּוּאִים הֻשְׁווּ כֻלָּם לִכְהֻנָּה, וְתַרְגּוּמוֹ וּמְקַדְּשִׁין מִנֵּהּ, בּוֹ בַיּוֹם קִדֵּשׁ מֹשֶׁה עִמָּהֶם:

מ׳:ל"ב בְּבֹאָ֞ם אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֗ד וּבְקָרְבָתָ֛ם אֶל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ יִרְחָ֑צוּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (ס)

40:32 they washed when they entered the Tent of Meeting and when they approached the altar—as the LORD had commanded Moses.

40:32 when they went into the tent of meeting, and when they came near unto the altar, they should wash; as the LORD commanded Moses.

מ׳:ל"ב בְּמֵעַלְהוֹן לְמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא וּבְמִקְרָבְהוֹן לְמַדְבְּחָא יְקַדְּשׁוּן כְּמָא דִי פַּקִּיד יְיָ יָת משֶׁה:

ובקרבתם. כְּמוֹ וּבְקָרְבָם – כְּשֶׁיִּקְרְבוּ:

מ׳:ל"ג וַיָּ֣קֶם אֶת־הֶחָצֵ֗ר סָבִיב֙ לַמִּשְׁכָּ֣ן וְלַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ וַיִּתֵּ֕ן אֶת־מָסַ֖ךְ שַׁ֣עַר הֶחָצֵ֑ר וַיְכַ֥ל מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶת־הַמְּלָאכָֽה׃ (פ)

40:33 And he set up the enclosure around the Tabernacle and the altar, and put up the screen for the gate of the enclosure. When Moses had finished the work,

40:33 And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the court. So Moses finished the work.

מ׳:ל"ג וַאֲקֵם יָת דַּרְתָּא סְחוֹר סְחוֹר לְמַשְׁכְּנָא וּלְמַדְבְּחָא וִיהַב יָת פְּרָסָא דִּתְרַע דַּרְתָּא וְשֵׁיצֵי משֶׁה יָת עִבִידָא:

מ׳:ל"ד וַיְכַ֥ס הֶעָנָ֖ן אֶת־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וּכְב֣וֹד יְהוָ֔ה מָלֵ֖א אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

40:34 the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the Presence of the LORD filled the Tabernacle.

40:34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

מ׳:ל"ד וַחֲפָא עֲנָנָא יָת מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא וִיקָרָא דַיְיָ אִתְמְלִי יָת מַשְׁכְּנָא:

מ׳:ל"ה וְלֹא־יָכֹ֣ל מֹשֶׁ֗ה לָבוֹא֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד כִּֽי־שָׁכַ֥ן עָלָ֖יו הֶעָנָ֑ן וּכְב֣וֹד יְהוָ֔ה מָלֵ֖א אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

40:35 Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud had settled upon it and the Presence of the LORD filled the Tabernacle.

40:35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of meeting, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.—

מ׳:ל"ה וְלָא יָכִיל משֶׁה לְמֵעַל לְמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא אֲרֵי שְׁרָא עֲלוֹהִי עֲנָנָא וִיקָרָא דַיְיָ אִתְמְלִי יָת מַשְׁכְּנָא:

ולא יכל משה לבוא אל אהל מועד. וְכָתוּב אֶחָד אוֹמֵר וּבְבֹא מֹשֶׁה אֶל אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד (במדבר ז')? בָּא הַכָּתוּב הַשְּׁלִישִׁי וְהִכְרִיעַ בֵּינֵיהֶם – כִּי שָׁכַן עָלָיו הֶעָנָן, אֱמֹר מֵעַתָּה כָּל זְמַן שֶׁהָיָה עָלָיו הֶעָנָן לֹא הָיָה יָכוֹל לָבֹא, נִסְתַּלֵּק הֶעָנָן נִכְנָס וּמְדַבֵּר עִמּוֹ (ספרא):

1וְלֹא יָכֹל מֹשֶׁה וְגוֹ׳. וַהֲגַם שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב בְּפָרָשַׁת מִשְׁפָּטִים (שמות כד:יח) ״וַיָּבֹא מֹשֶׁה בְּתוֹךְ הֶעָנָן״, שָׁם הָיָה אַחַר שֶׁקָּרָא אֵלָיו ה׳ נָתַן בּוֹ כֹּחַ. אוֹ יֹאמַר עַל זֶה הַדֶּרֶךְ וְלֹא יָכֹל מֹשֶׁה וְגוֹ׳, וְהַטַּעַם כִּי שָׁכַן עָלָיו הֶעָנָן וְאֵין מְצִיאוּת זֶה כִּמְצִיאוּת הָאָמוּר בְּפָרָשַׁת מִשְׁפָּטִים, כִּי כָאן כְּבוֹד ה׳ מָלֵא אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן, מַה שֶׁאֵין כֵּן הֶעָנָן שֶׁבָּא בּוֹ בְּהַר סִינַי, שָׁם נֶאֱמַר (שמות כד:יז): ״וּמַרְאֵה כְּבוֹד ה׳ כְּאֵשׁ אוֹכֶלֶת בְּרֹאשׁ הָהָר״, וְסָמוּךְ לֵיהּ: ״וַיָּבֹא מֹשֶׁה בְּתוֹךְ הֶעָנָן וַיַּעַל אֶל הָהָר״, פֵּרוּשׁ – מָקוֹם שֶׁאֵין שָׁם שׁוֹכֵן כְּבוֹד ה׳, מַה שֶׁאֵין כֵּן בְּמַה שֶׁלְּפָנֵינוּ שֶׁהָיָה כְּבוֹד ה׳ מָלֵא הַמִּשְׁכָּן, וְלֹא יָכוֹל לִכָּנֵס בִּמְקוֹם מְלֹא כְּבוֹדוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ.

ולא יכול משה לכא אל אהל מועד, and Moses was unable to enter the Tent of Testimony, etc. It seems strange that the "cloud" prevented Moses from entering the Tent seeing that the Torah had told us in Exodus 24,18 that "Moses went inside the cloud, etc." The difference is clear. In Parshat Mishpatim Moses entered the cloud after G'd had summoned him. In this instance no summons from G'd had been forthcoming. Another reason why Moses could not enter the Tent may have been indicated by the words כי שכן עליו הענן, that the cloud was stationary above the Tent and the glory of G'd filled the entire Tent. In Mishpatim we were told (24,17) that G'd's appearance on the top of the Mountain was like that of fire which consumes, and immediately afterwards we were told that Moses entered the cloud prior to ascending the Mountain. This means that the place Moses ascended was not the place where G'd's glory reposed at that time. In our situation, Moses could not enter an area in which G'd's glory reposed.

40:37 but if the cloud did not lift, they would not set out until such time as it did lift.

40:37 But if the cloud was not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up.

מ׳:ל"ז וְאִם לָא יִסְתַּלַּק עֲנָנָא וְלָא נָטְלִין עַד יוֹמָא דְּאִסְתַּלָּקוּתֵיהּ:

40:38 For over the Tabernacle a cloud of the LORD rested by day, and fire would appear in itaI.e., in the cloud. by night, in the view of all the house of Israel throughout their journeys.

40:38 For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and there was fire therein by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.—

מ׳:ל"ח אֲרֵי עֲנָנָא יְקָרָא דַיְיָ עַל מַשְׁכְּנָא בִּימָמָא וְחֵיזוּ אֶשָּׁתָא הֲוֵי בְלֵילְיָא בֵּיהּ לְעֵינֵי כָל בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּכֹל מַטְּלָנֵיהוֹן:
