וַיַּ֖עַשׂ אֶת־הָאֵפֹ֑ד זָהָ֗ב תְּכֵ֧לֶת וְאַרְגָּמָ֛ן וְתוֹלַ֥עַת שָׁנִ֖י וְשֵׁ֥שׁ מָשְׁזָֽר׃
39:2
The ephod was madebHere and elsewhere in this chapter the singular active verb (lit. “he made”) is used impersonally. of gold, blue, purple, and crimson yarns, and fine twisted linen.

And he made the ephod of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.

וַעֲבַד יָת אֵפוֹדָא דַּהֲבָא תִּכְלָא וְאַרְגְּוָנָא וּצְבַע זְהוֹרִי וּבוּץ שְׁזִיר:

וַֽיְרַקְּע֞וּ אֶת־פַּחֵ֣י הַזָּהָב֮ וְקִצֵּ֣ץ פְּתִילִם֒ לַעֲשׂ֗וֹת בְּת֤וֹךְ הַתְּכֵ֙לֶת֙ וּבְת֣וֹךְ הָֽאַרְגָּמָ֔ן וּבְת֛וֹךְ תּוֹלַ֥עַת הַשָּׁנִ֖י וּבְת֣וֹךְ הַשֵּׁ֑שׁ מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה חֹשֵֽׁב׃
39:3
They hammered out sheets of gold and cut threads to be worked into designs among the blue, the purple, and the crimson yarns, and the fine linen.

And they did beat the gold into thin plates, and cut it into threads, to work it in the blue, and in the purple, and in the scarlet, and in the fine linen, the work of the skilful workman.

וְרַדִּידוּ יָת טַסֵּי דַהֲבָא וְקַצִּיצוּ חוּטִין לְמֶעְבַּד בְּגוֹ תִכְלָא וּבְגוֹ אַרְגְּוָנָא וּבְגוֹ צְבַע זְהוֹרִי וּבְגוֹ בוּצָא עוֹבַד אָמָּן:
וירקעו. כְּמוֹ לְרֹקַע הָאָרֶץ (תהילים קל"ו), כְּתַרְגּוּמוֹ וּרְדִידוּ, טַסִּין הָיוּ מְרַדְּדִין מִן הַזָּהָב, אשטנ"דרא בְּלַעַז, טַסִּין דַּקּוֹת. כָּאן הוּא מְלַמֶּדְךָ הֵיאַךְ הָיוּ טוֹוִין אֶת הַזָּהָב עִם הַחוּטִין, מְרַדְּדִים טַסִּין דַּקִּין, וְקוֹצְצִין מֵהֶן פְּתִילִים לְאֹרֶךְ הַטַּס – לַעֲשׂוֹת אוֹתָן פְּתִילִים תַּעֲרֹבֶת עִם כָּל מִין וָמִין בַּחֹשֶׁן וְאֵפוֹד שֶׁנֶּ' בָּהֶן זָהָב, חוּט אֶחָד שֶׁל זָהָב עִם ו' חוּטִין שֶׁל תְּכֵלֶת, וְכֵן עִם כָּל מִין וָמִין, שֶׁכָּל הַמִּינִים חוּטָן כָּפוּל ו', וְהַזָּהָב חוּט שְׁבִיעִי עִם כָּל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד:

כְּתֵפֹ֥ת עָֽשׂוּ־ל֖וֹ חֹבְרֹ֑ת עַל־שְׁנֵ֥י קצוותו [קְצוֹתָ֖יו] חֻבָּֽר׃

They made for it attaching shoulder-pieces; they were attached at its two ends.

כַּתְפָּן עֲבָדוּ לֵיהּ מְלַפְּפָן עַל תְּרֵין סִטְרוֹהִי יִתְלָפֵף:

39:5
The decorated band that was upon it was made like it, of one piece with it; of gold, blue, purple, and crimson yarns, and fine twisted linen—as the LORD had commanded Moses.

And the skilfully woven band, that was upon it, wherewith to gird it on, was of the same piece and like the work thereof: of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, as the LORD commanded Moses.

וְהֶמְיַן תִּקּוּנֵיהּ דִּי עֲלוֹהִי מִנֵּיהּ הוּא כְּעוֹבָדוֹהִי דַּהֲבָא תִּכְלָא וְאַרְגְּוָנָא וּצְבַע זְהוֹרִי וּבוּץ שְׁזִיר כְּמָא דִי פַקִּיד יְיָ יָת משֶׁה:

וַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֙ אֶת־אַבְנֵ֣י הַשֹּׁ֔הַם מֻֽסַבֹּ֖ת מִשְׁבְּצֹ֣ת זָהָ֑ב מְפֻתָּחֹת֙ פִּתּוּחֵ֣י חוֹתָ֔ם עַל־שְׁמ֖וֹת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
39:6
They bordered the lazuli stones with frames of gold, engraved with seal engravings of the names of the sons of Israel.

And they wrought the onyx stones, inclosed in settings of gold, graven with the engravings of a signet, according to the names of the children of Israel.

וַעֲבָדוּ יָת אַבְנֵי בוּרְלָא מְשַׁקְּעָן מְרַמְּצָן דִּדְהָב גְּלִיפָן כְּתַב מְפָרַשׁ עַל שְׁמָהַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל:

וַיָּ֣שֶׂם אֹתָ֗ם עַ֚ל כִּתְפֹ֣ת הָאֵפֹ֔ד אַבְנֵ֥י זִכָּר֖וֹן לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (פ)
39:7
They were set on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, as stones of remembrance for the Israelites—as the LORD had commanded Moses.

And he put them on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, to be stones of memorial for the children of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses.

וְשַׁוִּי יָתְהוֹן עַל כִּתְפָּא דְאֵפוֹדָא אַבְנֵי דוּכְרָנָא לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כְּמָא דִי פַּקִּיד יְיָ יָת משֶׁה:

The breastpiece was made in the style of the ephod: of gold, blue, purple, and crimson yarns, and fine twisted linen.

And he made the breastplate, the work of the skilful workman, like the work of the ephod: of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.

וַעֲבַד יָת חוּשְׁנָא עוֹבַד אָמָּן כְּעוֹבָדֵי אֵפוֹדָא דַּהֲבָא תִּכְלָא וְאַרְגְּוָנָא וּצְבַע זְהוֹרִי וּבוּץ שְׁזִיר:

רָב֧וּעַ הָיָ֛ה כָּפ֖וּל עָשׂ֣וּ אֶת־הַחֹ֑שֶׁן זֶ֧רֶת אָרְכּ֛וֹ וְזֶ֥רֶת רָחְבּ֖וֹ כָּפֽוּל׃
39:9
It was square; they made the breastpiece doubled—a span in length and a span in width, doubled.

It was four-square; they made the breastplate double; a span was the length thereof, and a span the breadth thereof, being double.

מְרַבַּע הֲוָה עֵיף עֲבָדוּ יָת חוּשְׁנָא זֶרְתָּא אֻרְכֵּיהּ וְזֶרְתָּא פְתָיֵהּ עֵיף:

וַיְמַלְאוּ־ב֔וֹ אַרְבָּעָ֖ה ט֣וּרֵי אָ֑בֶן ט֗וּר אֹ֤דֶם פִּטְדָה֙ וּבָרֶ֔קֶת הַטּ֖וּר הָאֶחָֽד׃

They set in it four rows of stones. The first row was a row of cSee note at 28.17.carnelian, chrysolite, and emerald;

And they set in it four rows of stones: a row of carnelian, topaz, and smaragd was the first row.

וְאַשְׁלִימוּ בֵיהּ אַרְבְּעָא סִדְרֵי אֶבֶן טָבָא סִדְרָא קַדְמָאָה סַמְקָן יַרְקָן וּבַרְקָן סִדְרָא חָד:

וְהַטּ֖וּר הַשֵּׁנִ֑י נֹ֥פֶךְ סַפִּ֖יר וְיָהֲלֹֽם׃

the second row: a turquoise, a sapphire, and an amethyst;

and the fourth row: a beryl, a lapis lazuli, and a jasper. They were encircled in their mountings with frames of gold.

And the fourth row, a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper; they were inclosed in fittings of gold in their settings.

וְסִדְרָא רְבִיעָאָה כְּרוּם יַמָּא וּבוּרְלָא וּפַנְטְרֵי מְשַׁקְּעָן מְרַמְּצָן דִּדְהַב בְּאַשְׁלָמוּתְהוֹן:

וְ֠הָאֲבָנִים עַל־שְׁמֹ֨ת בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל הֵ֛נָּה שְׁתֵּ֥ים עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה עַל־שְׁמֹתָ֑ם פִּתּוּחֵ֤י חֹתָם֙ אִ֣ישׁ עַל־שְׁמ֔וֹ לִשְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר שָֽׁבֶט׃
39:14
The stones corresponded [in number] to the names of the sons of Israel: twelve, corresponding to their names; engraved like seals, each with its name, for the twelve tribes.

And the stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet, every one according to his name, for the twelve tribes.

וְאַבְנַיָּא עַל שְׁמָהַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אִנִּין תַּרְתֵּי עֶסְרֵי עַל שְׁמָהָתְהוֹן כְּתַב מְפָרַשׁ כִּגְלוֹף דְּעִזְקָא גְּבַר עַל שְׁמֵיהּ לִתְרֵין עֲסַר שִׁבְטִין:

וַיַּעֲשׂ֧וּ עַל־הַחֹ֛שֶׁן שַׁרְשְׁרֹ֥ת גַּבְלֻ֖ת מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה עֲבֹ֑ת זָהָ֖ב טָהֽוֹר׃
39:15
On the breastpiece they made braided chains of corded work in pure gold.

And they made upon the breastplate plaited chains, of wreathen work of pure gold.

וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֗וּ שְׁתֵּי֙ מִשְׁבְּצֹ֣ת זָהָ֔ב וּשְׁתֵּ֖י טַבְּעֹ֣ת זָהָ֑ב וַֽיִּתְּנ֗וּ אֶת־שְׁתֵּי֙ הַטַּבָּעֹ֔ת עַל־שְׁנֵ֖י קְצ֥וֹת הַחֹֽשֶׁן׃
39:16
They made two frames of gold and two rings of gold, and fastened the two rings at the two ends of the breastpiece,

And they made two settings of gold, and two gold rings; and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate.

וַעֲבָדוּ תַּרְתֵּין מְרַמְּצָן דִּדְהַב וְתַרְתֵּין עִזְקַן דִּדְהָב וִיהָבוּ יָת תַּרְתֵּין עִזְקָתָא עַל תְּרֵין סִטְרֵי חוּשְׁנָא:

וַֽיִּתְּנ֗וּ שְׁתֵּי֙ הָעֲבֹתֹ֣ת הַזָּהָ֔ב עַל־שְׁתֵּ֖י הַטַּבָּעֹ֑ת עַל־קְצ֖וֹת הַחֹֽשֶׁן׃

attaching the two golden cords to the two rings at the ends of the breastpiece.

And they put the two wreathen chains of gold on the two rings at the ends of the breastplate.

וְאֵ֨ת שְׁתֵּ֤י קְצוֹת֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י הָֽעֲבֹתֹ֔ת נָתְנ֖וּ עַל־שְׁתֵּ֣י הַֽמִּשְׁבְּצֹ֑ת וַֽיִּתְּנֻ֛ם עַל־כִּתְפֹ֥ת הָאֵפֹ֖ד אֶל־מ֥וּל פָּנָֽיו׃
39:18
They then fastened the two ends of the cords to the two frames, attaching them to the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, at the front.

And the other two ends of the two wreathen chains they put on the two settings, and put them on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, in the forepart thereof.

וְיָת תַּרְתֵּין גְּדִילָן דִּעַל תַּרְתֵּין סִטְרוֹהִי יְהָבוּ עַל תַּרְתֵּין מְרַמְּצָתָא וִיהָבֻנּוּן עַל כַּתְפֵי אֵפוֹדָא לָקֳבֵל אַפּוֹהִי:

וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֗וּ שְׁתֵּי֙ טַבְּעֹ֣ת זָהָ֔ב וַיָּשִׂ֕ימוּ עַל־שְׁנֵ֖י קְצ֣וֹת הַחֹ֑שֶׁן עַל־שְׂפָת֕וֹ אֲשֶׁ֛ר אֶל־עֵ֥בֶר הָאֵפֹ֖ד בָּֽיְתָה׃
39:19
They made two rings of gold and attached them to the two ends of the breastpiece, at its inner edge, which faced the ephod.

And they made two rings of gold, and put them upon the two ends of the breastplate, upon the edge thereof, which was toward the side of the ephod inward.

וַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֮ שְׁתֵּ֣י טַבְּעֹ֣ת זָהָב֒ וַֽיִּתְּנֻ֡ם עַל־שְׁתֵּי֩ כִתְפֹ֨ת הָאֵפֹ֤ד מִלְמַ֙טָּה֙ מִמּ֣וּל פָּנָ֔יו לְעֻמַּ֖ת מֶחְבַּרְתּ֑וֹ מִמַּ֕עַל לְחֵ֖שֶׁב הָאֵפֹֽד׃
39:20
They made two other rings of gold and fastened them on the front of the ephod, low on the two shoulder-pieces, close to its seam above the decorated band.

And they made two rings of gold, and put them on the two shoulder-pieces of the ephod underneath, in the forepart thereof, close by the coupling thereof, above the skilfully woven band of the ephod.

וַעֲבָדוּ תַּרְתֵּין עִזְקַן דִּדְהַב וִיהָבֻנּוּן עַל תַּרְתֵּין כִּתְפֵי אֵפוֹדָא מִלְּרַע מִלָּקֳבֵל אַפּוֹהִי לָקֳבֵל בֵּית לוֹפֵי מֵעִלָּוֵי לְהֶמְיַן אֵפוֹדָא:

וַיִּרְכְּס֣וּ אֶת־הַחֹ֡שֶׁן מִטַּבְּעֹתָיו֩ אֶל־טַבְּעֹ֨ת הָאֵפֹ֜ד בִּפְתִ֣יל תְּכֵ֗לֶת לִֽהְיֹת֙ עַל־חֵ֣שֶׁב הָאֵפֹ֔ד וְלֹֽא־יִזַּ֣ח הַחֹ֔שֶׁן מֵעַ֖ל הָאֵפֹ֑ד כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃
39:21
The breastpiece was held in place by a cord of blue from its rings to the rings of the ephod, so that the breastpiece rested on the decorated band and did not come loose from the ephod—as the LORD had commanded Moses.

And they did bind the breastplate by the rings thereof unto the rings of the ephod with a thread of blue, that it might be upon the skilfully woven band of the ephod, and that the breastplate might not be loosed from the ephod; as the LORD commanded Moses.

וְיַחֲדוּן יָת חוּשְׁנָא מְעִזְקָתֵיהּ לְעִזְקְתָא דְאֵפוֹדָא בְּחוּטָא דִתְכֶלְתָּא לְמֵהֶוֵי עַל הֶמְיַן אֵפוֹדָא וְלָא יִתְפָּרֵק חוּשְׁנָא מֵעִלָּוֵי אֵפוֹדָא כְּמָא דִי פַּקִּיד יְיָ יָת משֶׁה:
