מ"ב:י"ט אִם־כֵּנִ֣ים אַתֶּ֔ם אֲחִיכֶ֣ם אֶחָ֔ד יֵאָסֵ֖ר בְּבֵ֣ית מִשְׁמַרְכֶ֑ם וְאַתֶּם֙ לְכ֣וּ הָבִ֔יאוּ שֶׁ֖בֶר רַעֲב֥וֹן בָּתֵּיכֶֽם׃
42:19 If you are honest men, let one of you brothers be held in your place of detention, while the rest of you go and take home rations for your starving households;
42:19 if ye be upright men, let one of your brethren be bound in your prison-house; but go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses;
מ"ב:י"ט אִם כֵּיוָנֵי אַתּוּן אֲחוּכוֹן חַד יִתְאַסַּר בְּבֵית מַטַּרְתְּכוֹן וְאַתּוּן אִיזִילוּ אוֹבִילוּ עִיבוּרָא דְּחַסִּיר בְּבָתֵּיכוֹן:
מ"ב:כ׳ וְאֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֤ם הַקָּטֹן֙ תָּבִ֣יאוּ אֵלַ֔י וְיֵאָמְנ֥וּ דִבְרֵיכֶ֖ם וְלֹ֣א תָמ֑וּתוּ וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־כֵֽן׃
42:20 but you must bring me your youngest brother, that your words may be verified and that you may not die.” And they did accordingly.
42:20 and bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die.’ And they did so.
מ"ב:כ׳ וְיָת אֲחוּכוֹן זְעֵירָא תַּיְתוּן לְוָתִי וִיהֵימְנוּן פִּתְגָּמֵיכוֹן וְלָא תְמוּתוּן וַעֲבָדוּ כֵן:
מ"ב:כ"א וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־אָחִ֗יו אֲבָל֮ אֲשֵׁמִ֣ים ׀ אֲנַחְנוּ֮ עַל־אָחִינוּ֒ אֲשֶׁ֨ר רָאִ֜ינוּ צָרַ֥ת נַפְשׁ֛וֹ בְּהִתְחַֽנְנ֥וֹ אֵלֵ֖ינוּ וְלֹ֣א שָׁמָ֑עְנוּ עַל־כֵּן֙ בָּ֣אָה אֵלֵ֔ינוּ הַצָּרָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת׃
42:21 They said to one another, “Alas, we are being punished on account of our brother, because we looked on at his anguish, yet paid no heed as he pleaded with us. That is why this distress has come upon us.”
42:21 And they said one to another: ‘We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.’
מ"ב:כ"א וַאֲמָרוּ גְּבַר לַאֲחוּהִי בְּקוּשְׁטָא חַיָּבִין אֲנַחְנָא עַל אָחוּנָא דִּי חֲזֵינָא עָקַת נַפְשֵׁיהּ כַּד הֲוָה מִתְחַנֶּן לָנָא וְלָא קַבֵּלְנָא מִנֵּיהּ עַל כֵּן אֲתָא (נ"א אָתֵת) לְוָתָנָא עַקְתָא הָדָא:
מ"ב:כ"ב וַיַּעַן֩ רְאוּבֵ֨ן אֹתָ֜ם לֵאמֹ֗ר הֲלוֹא֩ אָמַ֨רְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶ֧ם ׀ לֵאמֹ֛ר אַל־תֶּחֶטְא֥וּ בַיֶּ֖לֶד וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֑ם וְגַם־דָּמ֖וֹ הִנֵּ֥ה נִדְרָֽשׁ׃
42:22 Then Reuben spoke up and said to them, “Did I not tell you, ‘Do no wrong to the boy’? But you paid no heed. Now comes the reckoning for his blood.”
42:22 And Reuben answered them, saying: ‘Spoke I not unto you, saying: Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore also, behold, his blood is required.’
מ"ב:כ"ב וַאֲתֵיב רְאוּבֵן יָתְהוֹן לְמֵימַר הֲלָא אֲמָרִית לְוָתְכוֹן לְמֵימַר לָא תְחוֹבוּן (נ"א תֶחְטָאוּן) בְּעוּלֵימָא וְלָא קַבֶּלְתּוּן וְאַף דְּמֵיהּ הָא מִתְבְּעֵי:
מ"ב:כ"ג וְהֵם֙ לֹ֣א יָֽדְע֔וּ כִּ֥י שֹׁמֵ֖עַ יוֹסֵ֑ף כִּ֥י הַמֵּלִ֖יץ בֵּינֹתָֽם׃
42:23 They did not know that Joseph understood, for there was an interpreter between him and them.
42:23 And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for the interpreter was between them.
מ"ב:כ"ג וְאִנּוּן לָא יָדְעוּן אֲרֵי שְׁמִיעַ יוֹסֵף אֲרֵי מְתֻרְגְּמָן הֲוָה בֵינֵיהוֹן:
מ"ב:כ"ד וַיִּסֹּ֥ב מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וַיֵּ֑בְךְּ וַיָּ֤שָׁב אֲלֵהֶם֙ וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם וַיִּקַּ֤ח מֵֽאִתָּם֙ אֶת־שִׁמְע֔וֹן וַיֶּאֱסֹ֥ר אֹת֖וֹ לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃
42:24 He turned away from them and wept. But he came back to them and spoke to them; and he took Simeon from among them and had him bound before their eyes.
42:24 And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.
מ"ב:כ"ד וְאִסְתַּחַר מֵעִלָּוֵיהוֹן וּבְכָא וְתָב לְוָתְהוֹן וּמַלֵּיל עִמְּהוֹן וּדְבַר מִלְּוָתְהוֹן יָת שִׁמְעוֹן וַאֲסַר יָתֵיהּ לְעֵינֵיהוֹן:
מ"ב:כ"ה וַיְצַ֣ו יוֹסֵ֗ף וַיְמַלְא֣וּ אֶת־כְּלֵיהֶם֮ בָּר֒ וּלְהָשִׁ֤יב כַּסְפֵּיהֶם֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־שַׂקּ֔וֹ וְלָתֵ֥ת לָהֶ֛ם צֵדָ֖ה לַדָּ֑רֶךְ וַיַּ֥עַשׂ לָהֶ֖ם כֵּֽן׃
42:25 Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, return each one’s money to his sack, and give them provisions for the journey; and this was done for them.
42:25 Then Joseph commanded to fill their vessels with corn, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way; and thus was it done unto them.
מ"ב:כ"ה וּפַקִּיד יוֹסֵף וּמְלוֹ יָת מָנֵיהוֹן עִיבוּרָא וְלַאֲתָבָא כַסְפֵּיהוֹן גְּבַר לְסַקֵּיהּ וּלְמִתַּן לְהוֹן זְוָדִין לְאָרְחָא וַעֲבַד לְהוֹן כֵּן:
מ"ב:כ"ו וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ אֶת־שִׁבְרָ֖ם עַל־חֲמֹרֵיהֶ֑ם וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ מִשָּֽׁם׃
42:26 So they loaded their asses with the rations and departed from there.
42:26 And they laded their asses with their corn, and departed thence.
מ"ב:כ"ו וּנְטָלוּ יָת עִיבוּרְהוֹן עַל חֲמָרֵיהוֹן וַאֲזָלוּ מִתַּמָּן:
מ"ב:כ"ז וַיִּפְתַּ֨ח הָאֶחָ֜ד אֶת־שַׂקּ֗וֹ לָתֵ֥ת מִסְפּ֛וֹא לַחֲמֹר֖וֹ בַּמָּל֑וֹן וַיַּרְא֙ אֶת־כַּסְפּ֔וֹ וְהִנֵּה־ה֖וּא בְּפִ֥י אַמְתַּחְתּֽוֹ׃
42:27 As one of them was opening his sack to give feed to his ass at the night encampment, he saw his money right there at the mouth of his bag.
42:27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the lodging-place, he espied his money; and, behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.
מ"ב:כ"ז וּפְתַח חַד יָת סַקֵּיהּ לְמִתַּן כִּסְתָא לַחֲמָרֵיהּ בְּבֵית מְבָתָא וַחֲזָא יָת כַּסְפֵּיהּ וְהָא הוּא בְּפוּם טוֹעֲנֵיהּ:
מ"ב:כ"ח וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־אֶחָיו֙ הוּשַׁ֣ב כַּסְפִּ֔י וְגַ֖ם הִנֵּ֣ה בְאַמְתַּחְתִּ֑י וַיֵּצֵ֣א לִבָּ֗ם וַיֶּֽחֶרְד֞וּ אִ֤ישׁ אֶל־אָחִיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר מַה־זֹּ֛את עָשָׂ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים לָֽנוּ׃
42:28 And he said to his brothers, “My money has been returned! It is here in my bag!” Their hearts sank; and, trembling, they turned to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?”
42:28 And he said unto his brethren: ‘My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack.’ And their heart failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying: ‘What is this that God hath done unto us?’
מ"ב:כ"ח וַאֲמַר לַאֲחוֹהִי אִתּוֹתַב כַּסְפִּי וְאַף הָא בְטוֹעֲנִי וּנְפַק מַדַּע לִבְּהוֹן וּתְוָהוּ גְּבַר לַאֲחוּהִי לְמֵימַר מָה דָא עֲבַד יְיָ לָנָא:
מ"ב:כ"ט וַיָּבֹ֛אוּ אֶל־יַעֲקֹ֥ב אֲבִיהֶ֖ם אַ֣רְצָה כְּנָ֑עַן וַיַּגִּ֣ידוּ ל֔וֹ אֵ֛ת כָּל־הַקֹּרֹ֥ת אֹתָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃
42:29 When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had befallen them, saying,
42:29 And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that had befallen them, saying:
מ"ב:כ"ט וַאֲתוֹ לְוַת יַעֲקֹב אֲבוּהוֹן אַרְעָא דִכְנָעַן וְחַוִּיאוּ לֵיהּ יָת כָּל דִּאֲרָעָן יָתְהוֹן לְמֵימָר:
מ"ב:ל׳ דִּ֠בֶּר הָאִ֨ישׁ אֲדֹנֵ֥י הָאָ֛רֶץ אִתָּ֖נוּ קָשׁ֑וֹת וַיִּתֵּ֣ן אֹתָ֔נוּ כִּֽמְרַגְּלִ֖ים אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
42:30 “The man who is lord of the land spoke harshly to us and accused us of spying on the land.
42:30 ’The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country.
מ"ב:ל׳ מַלֵּיל גַּבְרָא רִבּוֹנָא דְאַרְעָא עִמָּנָא קַשְׁיָן וִיהַב יָתָנָא כִּמְאַלִּילֵי יָת אַרְעָא:
מ"ב:ל"א וַנֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו כֵּנִ֣ים אֲנָ֑חְנוּ לֹ֥א הָיִ֖ינוּ מְרַגְּלִֽים׃
42:31 We said to him, ‘We are honest men; we have never been spies!
42:31 And we said unto him: We are upright men; we are no spies.
מ"ב:ל"א וַאֲמַרְנָא לֵיהּ כֵּיוָנֵי אֲנָחְנָא לָא הֲוֵינָא מְאַלִּילֵי:
מ"ב:ל"ב שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֥ר אֲנַ֛חְנוּ אַחִ֖ים בְּנֵ֣י אָבִ֑ינוּ הָאֶחָ֣ד אֵינֶ֔נּוּ וְהַקָּטֹ֥ן הַיּ֛וֹם אֶת־אָבִ֖ינוּ בְּאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃
42:32 There were twelve of us brothers, sons by the same father; but one is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in the land of Canaan.’
42:32 We are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan. .
מ"ב:ל"ב תְּרֵין עֲסַר אֲנַחְנָא אַחִין בְּנֵי אָבוּנָא חַד לֵיתוֹהִי וּזְעֵירָא יוֹמָא דֵין עִם אָבוּנָא בְּאַרְעָא דִכְנָעַן:
מ"ב:ל"ג וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֵ֗ינוּ הָאִישׁ֙ אֲדֹנֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ בְּזֹ֣את אֵדַ֔ע כִּ֥י כֵנִ֖ים אַתֶּ֑ם אֲחִיכֶ֤ם הָֽאֶחָד֙ הַנִּ֣יחוּ אִתִּ֔י וְאֶת־רַעֲב֥וֹן בָּתֵּיכֶ֖ם קְח֥וּ וָלֵֽכוּ׃
42:33 But the man who is lord of the land said to us, ‘By this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take something for your starving households and be off.
42:33 And the man, the lord of the land, said unto us: Hereby shall I know that ye are upright men: leave one of your brethren with me, and take corn for the famine of your houses, and go your way.
מ"ב:ל"ג וַאֲמַר לָנָא גַּבְרָא רִבּוֹנָא דְאַרְעָא בְּדָא אִדַּע אֲרֵי כֵיוָנֵי אַתּוּן אֲחוּכוֹן חַד שְׁבוּקוּ לְוָתִי וְיָת עִיבוּרָא דְחַסִּיר בְּבָתֵּיכוֹן סִיבוּ וֶאֱזִילוּ:
מ"ב:ל"ד וְ֠הָבִיאוּ אֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֣ם הַקָּטֹן֮ אֵלַי֒ וְאֵֽדְעָ֗ה כִּ֣י לֹ֤א מְרַגְּלִים֙ אַתֶּ֔ם כִּ֥י כֵנִ֖ים אַתֶּ֑ם אֶת־אֲחִיכֶם֙ אֶתֵּ֣ן לָכֶ֔ם וְאֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ תִּסְחָֽרוּ׃
42:34 And bring your youngest brother to me, that I may know that you are not spies but honest men. I will then restore your brother to you, and you shall be free to move about in the land.’”
42:34 And bring your youngest brother unto me; then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are upright men; so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffic in the land.’
מ"ב:ל"ד וְאַיְתִיאוּ יָת אֲחוּכוֹן זְעֵירָא לְוָתִי וְאִדַּע אֲרֵי לָא מְאַלִּילֵי אַתּוּן אֲרֵי כֵיוָנֵי אַתּוּן יָת אֲחוּכוֹן אֶתֵּן לְכוֹן וְיָת אַרְעָא תַּעְבְּדוּן בַּהּ סְחוֹרְתָּא:
מ"ב:ל"ה וַיְהִ֗י הֵ֚ם מְרִיקִ֣ים שַׂקֵּיהֶ֔ם וְהִנֵּה־אִ֥ישׁ צְרוֹר־כַּסְפּ֖וֹ בְּשַׂקּ֑וֹ וַיִּרְא֞וּ אֶת־צְרֹר֧וֹת כַּסְפֵּיהֶ֛ם הֵ֥מָּה וַאֲבִיהֶ֖ם וַיִּירָֽאוּ׃
42:35 As they were emptying their sacks, there, in each one’s sack, was his money-bag! When they and their father saw their money-bags, they were dismayed.
42:35 And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid.
מ"ב:ל"ה וַהֲוָה אִנּוּן מְרִיקִין סַקֵּיהוֹן וְהָא גְבַר צְרִיר כַּסְפֵּיהּ בְּסַקֵּיהּ וַחֲזוֹ יָת צְרָרֵי כַסְפֵּיהוֹן אִנּוּן וַאֲבוּהוֹן וּדְחִילוּ:
מ"ב:ל"ו וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ יַעֲקֹ֣ב אֲבִיהֶ֔ם אֹתִ֖י שִׁכַּלְתֶּ֑ם יוֹסֵ֤ף אֵינֶ֙נּוּ֙ וְשִׁמְע֣וֹן אֵינֶ֔נּוּ וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֣ן תִּקָּ֔חוּ עָלַ֖י הָי֥וּ כֻלָּֽנָה׃
42:36 Their father Jacob said to them, “It is always me that you bereave: Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you would take away Benjamin. These things always happen to me!”
42:36 And Jacob their father said unto them: ‘Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away; upon me are all these things come.’
מ"ב:ל"ו וַאֲמַר לְהוֹן יַעֲקֹב אֲבוּהוֹן יָתִי אַתְכֶּלְתּוּן יוֹסֵף לֵיתוֹהִי וְשִׁמְעוֹן לָא הֲוָה הָכָא (לֵיתוֹהִי) וְיָת בִּנְיָמִן תִּדְבְּרוּן עֲלַי הֲווֹ כָלְּהוֹן:
מ"ב:ל"ז וַיֹּ֤אמֶר רְאוּבֵן֙ אֶל־אָבִ֣יו לֵאמֹ֔ר אֶת־שְׁנֵ֤י בָנַי֙ תָּמִ֔ית אִם־לֹ֥א אֲבִיאֶ֖נּוּ אֵלֶ֑יךָ תְּנָ֤ה אֹתוֹ֙ עַל־יָדִ֔י וַאֲנִ֖י אֲשִׁיבֶ֥נּוּ אֵלֶֽיךָ׃
42:37 Then Reuben said to his father, “You may kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my care, and I will return him to you.”
42:37 And Reuben spoke unto his father, saying: ‘Thou shalt slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee; deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him back to thee.’
מ"ב:ל"ז וַאֲמַר רְאוּבֵן לְוַת אֲבוּהִי לְמֵימַר יָת תְּרֵין בְּנַי תְּמִית אִם לָא אַיְתִנֵּיהּ לְוָתָךְ הַב יָתֵיהּ עַל יְדִי וַאֲנָא אֲתֵבִנֵּיהּ לָךְ:
מ"ב:ל"ח וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לֹֽא־יֵרֵ֥ד בְּנִ֖י עִמָּכֶ֑ם כִּֽי־אָחִ֨יו מֵ֜ת וְה֧וּא לְבַדּ֣וֹ נִשְׁאָ֗ר וּקְרָאָ֤הוּ אָסוֹן֙ בַּדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּֽלְכוּ־בָ֔הּ וְהוֹרַדְתֶּ֧ם אֶת־שֵׂיבָתִ֛י בְּיָג֖וֹן שְׁאֽוֹלָה׃
42:38 But he said, “My son must not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If he meets with disaster on the journey you are taking, you will send my white head down to Sheol in grief.”
42:38 And he said: ‘My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left; if harm befall him by the way in which ye go, then will ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
מ"ב:ל"ח וַאֲמַר לָא יֵחוֹת בְּרִי עִמְּכוֹן אֲרֵי אֲחוּהִי מִית וְהוּא בִּלְחוֹדוֹהִי אֶשְׁתָּאַר וִיעַרְעִנֵּיהּ מוֹתָא בְּאָרְחָא דִּי תְהָכוּן בַּהּ וְתַחֲתוּן יָת שִׂיבְתִי בְּדָווֹנָא לִשְׁאוֹל:
מ"ג:א׳ וְהָרָעָ֖ב כָּבֵ֥ד בָּאָֽרֶץ׃
43:1 But the famine in the land was severe.
43:1 And the famine was sore in the land.
מ"ג:א׳ וְכַפְנָא תַּקִּיף בְּאַרְעָא:
מ"ג:ב׳ וַיְהִ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר כִּלּוּ֙ לֶאֱכֹ֣ל אֶת־הַשֶּׁ֔בֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵבִ֖יאוּ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם֙ אֲבִיהֶ֔ם שֻׁ֖בוּ שִׁבְרוּ־לָ֥נוּ מְעַט־אֹֽכֶל׃
43:2 And when they had eaten up the rations which they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again and procure some food for us.”
43:2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, that their father said unto them: ‘Go again, buy us a little food.’
מ"ג:ב׳ וַהֲוָה כַּד סַפִּיקוּ (שֵׁצִיאוּ עי' רש"י) לְמֵיכַל יָת עִיבוּרָא דְּאַיְתִיאוּ מִמִּצְרָיִם וַאֲמַר לְהוֹן אֲבוּהוֹן תּוּבוּ זְבוּנוּ לָנָא זְעֵיר עִיבוּרָא:
מ"ג:ג׳ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֵלָ֛יו יְהוּדָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר הָעֵ֣ד הֵעִד֩ בָּ֨נוּ הָאִ֤ישׁ לֵאמֹר֙ לֹֽא־תִרְא֣וּ פָנַ֔י בִּלְתִּ֖י אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אִתְּכֶֽם׃
43:3 But Judah said to him, “The man warned us, aLit. “Do not see my face.”‘Do not let me see your faces-a unless your brother is with you.’
43:3 And Judah spoke unto him, saying: ‘The man did earnestly forewarn us, saying: Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
מ"ג:ג׳ וַאֲמַר לֵיהּ יְהוּדָה לְמֵימָר אַסְהָדָא אַסְהֵד בָּנָא גַבְרָא לְמֵימַר לָא תֶחֱזוּן אַפַּי אֶלָּהֵין כַּד אֲחוּכוֹן עִמְּכוֹן:
מ"ג:ד׳ אִם־יֶשְׁךָ֛ מְשַׁלֵּ֥חַ אֶת־אָחִ֖ינוּ אִתָּ֑נוּ נֵרְדָ֕ה וְנִשְׁבְּרָ֥ה לְךָ֖ אֹֽכֶל׃
43:4 If you will let our brother go with us, we will go down and procure food for you;
43:4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food;
מ"ג:ד׳ אִם אִיתָךְ מְשַׁלַּח יָת אָחוּנָא עִמָּנָא נֵיחוֹת וְנִזְבֵּן לָךְ עִיבוּרָא:
מ"ג:ה׳ וְאִם־אֵינְךָ֥ מְשַׁלֵּ֖חַ לֹ֣א נֵרֵ֑ד כִּֽי־הָאִ֞ישׁ אָמַ֤ר אֵלֵ֙ינוּ֙ לֹֽא־תִרְא֣וּ פָנַ֔י בִּלְתִּ֖י אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אִתְּכֶֽם׃
43:5 but if you will not let him go, we will not go down, for the man said to us, aLit. “Do not see my face.”‘Do not let me see your faces-a unless your brother is with you.’”
43:5 but if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down, for the man said unto us: Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.’
מ"ג:ה׳ וְאִם לֵיתָךְ מְשַׁלַּח לָא נֵיחוֹת אֲרֵי גַבְרָא אֲמַר לָנָא לָא תֶחֱזוּן אַפַּי אֶלָּהֵין כַּד אֲחוּכוֹן עִמְּכוֹן:
מ"ג:ו׳ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לָמָ֥ה הֲרֵעֹתֶ֖ם לִ֑י לְהַגִּ֣יד לָאִ֔ישׁ הַע֥וֹד לָכֶ֖ם אָֽח׃
43:6 And Israel said, “Why did you serve me so ill as to tell the man that you had another brother?”
43:6 And Israel said: ‘Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?’
מ"ג:ו׳ וַאֲמַר יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמָה אַבְאֶשְׁתּוּן לִי לְחַוָּאָה לְגַבְרָא הַעַד כְּעַן לְכוֹן אָחָא:
מ"ג:ז׳ וַיֹּאמְר֡וּ שָׁא֣וֹל שָֽׁאַל־הָ֠אִישׁ לָ֣נוּ וּלְמֽוֹלַדְתֵּ֜נוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הַע֨וֹד אֲבִיכֶ֥ם חַי֙ הֲיֵ֣שׁ לָכֶ֣ם אָ֔ח וַנַ֨גֶּד־ל֔וֹ עַל־פִּ֖י הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה הֲיָד֣וֹעַ נֵדַ֔ע כִּ֣י יֹאמַ֔ר הוֹרִ֖ידוּ אֶת־אֲחִיכֶֽם׃
43:7 They replied, “But the man kept asking about us and our family, saying, ‘Is your father still living? Have you another brother?’ And we answered him accordingly. How were we to know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?”
43:7 And they said: ‘The man asked straitly concerning ourselves, and concerning our kindred, saying: Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words; could we in any wise know that he would say: Bring your brother down?’
מ"ג:ז׳ וַאֲמָרוּ מִשְׁאַל שָׁאֵל גַּבְרָא לָנָא וּלְיַלָּדוּתָנָא לְמֵימַר הַעַד כְּעַן אֲבוּכוֹן קַיָּם הַאִית לְכוֹן אָחָא וְחַוֵּינָא לֵיהּ עַל מֵימַר פִּתְגָּמַיָּא הָאִלֵּין הֲמִדַּע הֲוֵינָא יָדְעִין אֲרֵי יֵימַר אוֹחִיתוּ יָת אֲחוּכוֹן:
מ"ג:ח׳ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוּדָ֜ה אֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אָבִ֗יו שִׁלְחָ֥ה הַנַּ֛עַר אִתִּ֖י וְנָק֣וּמָה וְנֵלֵ֑כָה וְנִֽחְיֶה֙ וְלֹ֣א נָמ֔וּת גַּם־אֲנַ֥חְנוּ גַם־אַתָּ֖ה גַּם־טַפֵּֽנוּ׃
43:8 Then Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy in my care, and let us be on our way, that we may live and not die—you and we and our children.
43:8 And Judah said unto Israel his father: ‘Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.
מ"ג:ח׳ וַאֲמַר יְהוּדָה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל אֲבוּהִי שְׁלַח עוּלֵימָא עִמִּי וְנֵקוּם וְנֵזֵיל וְנֵיחֵי וְלָא נְמוּת אַף אֲנַחְנָא אַף אַתְּ אַף טַפְלָנָא:
מ"ג:ט׳ אָֽנֹכִי֙ אֶֽעֶרְבֶ֔נּוּ מִיָּדִ֖י תְּבַקְשֶׁ֑נּוּ אִם־לֹ֨א הֲבִיאֹתִ֤יו אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ וְהִצַּגְתִּ֣יו לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְחָטָ֥אתִֽי לְךָ֖ כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃
43:9 I myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible: if I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, I shall stand guilty before you forever.
43:9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him; if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever.
מ"ג:ט׳ אֲנָא מְעָרַבְנָא בֵיהּ מִן יְדִי תִּבְעִנֵּיהּ אִם לָא אַיְתִנֵּיהּ לָךְ וַאֲקֵימִנֵּיהּ קֳדָמָךְ וְאֵהֵי חָטֵי לָךְ כָּל יוֹמַיָּא:
מ"ג:י׳ כִּ֖י לוּלֵ֣א הִתְמַהְמָ֑הְנוּ כִּֽי־עַתָּ֥ה שַׁ֖בְנוּ זֶ֥ה פַעֲמָֽיִם׃
43:10 For we could have been there and back twice if we had not dawdled.”
43:10 For except we had lingered, surely we had now returned a second time.’
מ"ג:י׳ אֲרֵי אִלּוּלָפוֹן בְּדָא אִתְעַכָּבְנָא אֲרֵי כְעַן תַּבְנָא דְּנַן תַּרְתֵּין זִמְנִין:
מ"ג:י"א וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֜ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אֲבִיהֶ֗ם אִם־כֵּ֣ן ׀ אֵפוֹא֮ זֹ֣את עֲשׂוּ֒ קְח֞וּ מִזִּמְרַ֤ת הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ בִּכְלֵיכֶ֔ם וְהוֹרִ֥ידוּ לָאִ֖ישׁ מִנְחָ֑ה מְעַ֤ט צֳרִי֙ וּמְעַ֣ט דְּבַ֔שׁ נְכֹ֣את וָלֹ֔ט בָּטְנִ֖ים וּשְׁקֵדִֽים׃
43:11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, do this: take some of the choice products of the land in your baggage, and carry them down as a gift for the man—some balm and some honey, gum, ladanum, pistachio nuts, and almonds.
43:11 And their father Israel said unto them: ‘If it be so now, do this: take of the choice fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spicery and ladanum, nuts, and almonds;
מ"ג:י"א וַאֲמַר לְהוֹן יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲבוּהוֹן אִם כֵּן הָכָא דָּא עִיבִידוּ סִיבוּ מִדִּמְשַׁבַּח בְּאַרְעָא בְּמָנֵיכוֹן וְאוֹחִיתוּ לְגַבְרָא תִּקְרֻבְתָּא זְעֵיר קְטַף וּזְעֵיר דְּבַשׁ שְׁעַף וּלְטוֹם בָּטְנִין וְשִׁגְדִין:
מ"ג:י"ב וְכֶ֥סֶף מִשְׁנֶ֖ה קְח֣וּ בְיֶדְכֶ֑ם וְאֶת־הַכֶּ֜סֶף הַמּוּשָׁ֨ב בְּפִ֤י אַמְתְּחֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ תָּשִׁ֣יבוּ בְיֶדְכֶ֔ם אוּלַ֥י מִשְׁגֶּ֖ה הֽוּא׃
43:12 And take with you double the money, carrying back with you the money that was replaced in the mouths of your bags; perhaps it was a mistake.
43:12 and take double money in your hand; and the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks carry back in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight;
מ"ג:י"ב וְכַסְפָּא עַל חַד תְּרֵין סִיבוּ בְיֶדְכוֹן וְיָת כַּסְפָּא דְּאִתּוֹתַב בְּפוּם טוֹעֲנֵיכוֹן תְּתִיבוּן בְּיֶדְכוֹן מָאִים שָׁלוּ הוּא:
מ"ג:י"ג וְאֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֖ם קָ֑חוּ וְק֖וּמוּ שׁ֥וּבוּ אֶל־הָאִֽישׁ׃
43:13 Take your brother too; and go back at once to the man.
43:13 take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man;
מ"ג:י"ג וְיָת אֲחוּכוֹן דְּבָרוּ וְקוּמוּ תּוּבוּ לְוַת גַּבְרָא:
מ"ג:י"ד וְאֵ֣ל שַׁדַּ֗י יִתֵּ֨ן לָכֶ֤ם רַחֲמִים֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הָאִ֔ישׁ וְשִׁלַּ֥ח לָכֶ֛ם אֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אַחֵ֖ר וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֑ין וַאֲנִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁכֹ֖לְתִּי שָׁכָֽלְתִּי׃
43:14 And may El Shaddai dispose the man to mercy toward you, that he may release to you your other brother, as well as Benjamin. As for me, if I am to be bereaved, I shall be bereaved.”
43:14 and God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release unto you your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.’
מ"ג:י"ד וְאֵל שַׁדַּי יִתֵּן לְכוֹן רַחֲמִין לָקֳדָם גַּבְרָא וְיִפְטַר לְכוֹן יָת אֲחוּכוֹן אָחֳרָנָא וְיָת בִּנְיָמִין וַאֲנָא כְּמָא דְאִתְכֵּלִית תְּכֵלִית:
אל שדי. שֶׁדַּי בִּנְתִינַת רַחֲמָיו וּכְדַי הַיְכֹלֶת בְּיָדוֹ לִתֵּן, יִתֵּן לָכֶם רַחֲמִים, זֶהוּ פְשׁוּטוֹ. וּמִדְרָשׁוֹ מִי שֶׁאָמַר לָעוֹלָם דַּי, יֹאמַר דַּי לְצָרוֹתַי, שֶׁלֹּא שָׁקַטְתִּי מִנְּעוּרַי, צָרַת לָבָן, צָרַת עֵשָׂו, צָרַת רָחֵל, צָרַת דִּינָה, צָרַת יוֹסֵף, צָרַת שִׁמְעוֹן, צָרַת בִּנְיָמִין:
מ"ג:ט"ו וַיִּקְח֤וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את וּמִשְׁנֶה־כֶּ֛סֶף לָקְח֥וּ בְיָדָ֖ם וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וַיָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ וַיֵּרְד֣וּ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י יוֹסֵֽף׃
43:15 So the men took that gift, and they took with them double the money, as well as Benjamin. They made their way down to Egypt, where they presented themselves to Joseph.
43:15 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
מ"ג:ט"ו וּנְסִיבוּ גֻבְרַיָּא יָת תִּקְרֻבְתָּא הָדָא וְעַל חַד תְּרֵין כַּסְפָּא נְסִיבוּ בִידֵיהוֹן וּדְבָרוּ יָת בִּנְיָמִן וְקָמוּ וּנְחָתוּ לְמִצְרַיִם וְקָמוּ קֳדָם יוֹסֵף:
