וַיֹּ֤אמֶר פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֔ף אַחֲרֵ֨י הוֹדִ֧יעַ אֱלֹהִ֛ים אוֹתְךָ֖ אֶת־כָּל־זֹ֑את אֵין־נָב֥וֹן וְחָכָ֖ם כָּמֽוֹךָ׃

So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is none so discerning and wise as you.

And Pharaoh said unto Joseph: ‘Forasmuch as God hath shown thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou.

וַאֲמַר פַּרְעֹה לְיוֹסֵף בָּתַר דְּאוֹדַע יְיָ יָתָךְ יָת כָּל דָּא לֵית סָכְלְתָן וְחַכִּים כְּוָתָךְ:
אין נבון וחכם כמוך. לְבַקֵּשׁ אִישׁ נָבוֹן וְחָכָם שֶׁאָמַרְתָּ, לֹא נִמְצָא כָמוֹךָ:

אַתָּה֙ תִּהְיֶ֣ה עַל־בֵּיתִ֔י וְעַל־פִּ֖יךָ יִשַּׁ֣ק כָּל־עַמִּ֑י רַ֥ק הַכִּסֵּ֖א אֶגְדַּ֥ל מִמֶּֽךָּ׃
41:40
You shall be in charge of my court, and by your command shall all my people be directed;bOthers “order themselves” or “pay homage”; meaning of Heb. yishshaq uncertain. only with respect to the throne shall I be superior to you.”

Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled; only in the throne will I be greater than thou.’

אַתְּ תְּהֵי מְמַנָּא עַל בֵּיתִי וְעַל מֵימְרָךְ יִתְּזַן כָּל עַמִּי לְחוֹד כָּרְסֵי מַלְכוּתָא הָדֵין אֵיהֵי יַקִּיר מִנָּךְ:
ישק. יִתְּזַן, יִתְפַּרְנֵס – כָּל צָרְכֵי עַמִּי יִהְיוּ נַעֲשִׂים עַל יָדְךָ, כְּמוֹ נַשְּׁקוּ בַר (תהילים ב'), גרני"שון בְּלַעַז:
רק הכסא. שֶׁיִּהְיוּ קוֹרִין לִי מֶלֶךְ:
כסא. לְשׁוֹן שֵׁם הַמְּלוּכָה, כְּמוֹ וִיגַדֵּל אֶת כִּסְאוֹ מִכִּסֵּא אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ (מלכים א א'):

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֖ה אֶל־יוֹסֵ֑ף רְאֵה֙ נָתַ֣תִּי אֹֽתְךָ֔ עַ֖ל כָּל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Pharaoh further said to Joseph, “See, I put you in charge of all the land of Egypt.”

And Pharaoh said unto Joseph: ‘See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.’

וַאֲמַר פַּרְעֹה לְיוֹסֵף חֲזֵי מַנֵּיתִי יָתָךְ עַל כָּל אַרְעָא דְמִצְרָיִם:
נתתי אתך. מַנֵּיתִי יָתָךְ, וְאַעַ"פִּ כֵּן לְשׁוֹן נְתִינָה הוּא, כְּמוֹ וּלְתִתְּךָ עֶלְיוֹן (דברים כ"ו); בֵּין לִגְדֻלָּה בֵּין לְשִׁפְלוּת נוֹפֵל לְשׁוֹן נְתִינָה עָלָיו, כְּמוֹ נָתַתִּי אֶתְכֶם נִבְזִים וּשְׁפָלִים (מלאכי ב'):

וַיָּ֨סַר פַּרְעֹ֤ה אֶת־טַבַּעְתּוֹ֙ מֵעַ֣ל יָד֔וֹ וַיִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתָ֖הּ עַל־יַ֣ד יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיַּלְבֵּ֤שׁ אֹתוֹ֙ בִּגְדֵי־שֵׁ֔שׁ וַיָּ֛שֶׂם רְבִ֥ד הַזָּהָ֖ב עַל־צַוָּארֽוֹ׃

And removing his signet ring from his hand, Pharaoh put it on Joseph’s hand; and he had him dressed in robes of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck.

And Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck.

וְאַעְדִּי פַרְעֹה יָת עִזְקְתֵיהּ מֵעַל יְדֵיהּ וִיהַב יָתַהּ עַל יְדָא דְיוֹסֵף וְאַלְבִּישׁ יָתֵיהּ לְבוּשִׁין דְּבוּץ וְשַׁוִּי מָנִיכָא דְדַהֲבָא עַל צַוְּארֵיהּ:
ויסר פרעה את טבעתו. נְתִינַת טַבַּעַת הַמֶּלֶךְ הִיא אוֹת לְמִי שֶׁנּוֹתְנָהּ לוֹ לִהְיוֹת שֵׁנִי לוֹ לִגְדֻלָּה:
בגדי שש. דְּבַר חֲשִׁיבוּת הוּא בְּמִצְרַיִם:
רביד. עֲנָק, וְעַל שֶׁהוּא רָצוּף בְּטַבָּעוֹת קָרוּי רְבִיד וְכֵן מַרְבַדִּים רָבַדְתִּי עַרְשִׂי (משלי ז') – רִצַּפְתִּי עַרְשִׂי מַרְצָפוֹת, בִּלְשׁוֹן מִשְׁנָה מֻקָּף רוֹבְדִין שֶׁל אֶבֶן, עַל הָרֹבֶד שֶׁבָּעֲזָרָה, וְהִיא רִצְפָּה:

וַיַּרְכֵּ֣ב אֹת֗וֹ בְּמִרְכֶּ֤בֶת הַמִּשְׁנֶה֙ אֲשֶׁר־ל֔וֹ וַיִּקְרְא֥וּ לְפָנָ֖יו אַבְרֵ֑ךְ וְנָת֣וֹן אֹת֔וֹ עַ֖ל כָּל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
41:43
He had him ride in the chariot of his second-in-command, and they cried before him, “Abrek!”cOthers “Bow the knee,” as though from Heb. barakh “to kneel”; perhaps from an Egyptian word of unknown meaning. Thus he placed him over all the land of Egypt.

And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him: ‘Abrech’; and he set him over all the land of Egypt.

וְאַרְכֵּיב יָתֵיהּ בִּרְתִכָּא תִנְיֵתָא דִּי לֵיהּ וְאַכְרִיזוּ קֳדָמוֹהִי דֵּין אַבָּא לְמַלְכָּא וּמַנִּי יָתֵיהּ עַל כָּל אַרְעָא דְמִצְרָיִם:
במרכבת המשנה. הַשְּׁנִיָּה לְמֶרְכַּבְתּוֹ, הַמְהַלֶּכֶת אֵצֶל שֶׁלּוֹ:
אברך. כְּתַרְגּוּמוֹ "דֵּין אַבָּא לְמַלְכָּא", רֵךְ בִּלְשׁוֹן אֲרַמִּי (נ"א רוֹמִי) מֶלֶךְ; בְּהַשֻּׁתָּפִין לָא רֵיכָא וְלֹא בַּר רֵיכָא, וּבְדִבְרֵי אַגָּדָה דָּרַשׁ רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אַבְרֵךְ זֶה יוֹסֵף שֶׁהוּא אָב בְּחָכְמָה וְרַךְ בַּשָּׁנִים, אָמַר לוֹ רַ' יוֹסֵי בֶּן דֻּרְמַסְקִית עַד מָתַי אַתָּה מְעַוֵּת עָלֵינוּ אֶת הַכְּתוּבִים? אֵין אַבְרֵךְ אֶלָּא לְשׁוֹן בִּרְכַּיִם, שֶׁהַכֹּל הָיוּ נִכְנָסִין וְיוֹצְאִין תַּחַת יָדוֹ, כָּעִנְיָן שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר, וְנָתוֹן אוֹתוֹ וְגוֹ':

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֛ה אֶל־יוֹסֵ֖ף אֲנִ֣י פַרְעֹ֑ה וּבִלְעָדֶ֗יךָ לֹֽא־יָרִ֨ים אִ֧ישׁ אֶת־יָד֛וֹ וְאֶת־רַגְל֖וֹ בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
41:44
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh; yet without you, no one shall lift up hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”

And Pharaoh said unto Joseph: ‘I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt.’

וַאֲמַר פַּרְעֹה לְיוֹסֵף אֲנָא פַרְעֹה וּבַר מֵימְרָךְ לָא יְרִים גְּבַר יָת יְדֵיהּ לְמֵיחַד זֵין וְיָת רַגְלֵיהּ לְמִרְכַּב עַל סוּסְיָא בְּכָל אַרְעָא דְמִצְרָיִם:
אני פרעה. שֶׁיֵּשׁ יְכֹלֶת בְּיָדִי לִגְזֹר גְּזֵרָה עַל מַלְכוּתִי, וַאֲנִי גּוֹזֵר שֶׁלֹּא יָרִים אִישׁ יָדוֹ בִלְעָדֶיךָ, – שֶׁלֹּא בִּרְשׁוּתְךָ. דָּ"אַ אֲנִי פַרְעֹה, אֲנִי אֶהְיֶה מֶלֶךְ, וּבִלְעָדֶיךָ וְגוֹ' וְזֶהוּ דֻּגְמַת רַק הַכִּסֵּא:
את ידו ואת רגלו. כְּתַרְגּוּמוֹ:

וַיִּקְרָ֨א פַרְעֹ֣ה שֵׁם־יוֹסֵף֮ צָֽפְנַ֣ת פַּעְנֵחַ֒ וַיִּתֶּן־ל֣וֹ אֶת־אָֽסְנַ֗ת בַּת־פּ֥וֹטִי פֶ֛רַע כֹּהֵ֥ן אֹ֖ן לְאִשָּׁ֑ה וַיֵּצֵ֥א יוֹסֵ֖ף עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Pharaoh then gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-paneah;dEgyptian for “God speaks; he lives,” or “creator of life.” and he gave him for a wife Asenath daughter of Poti-phera, priest of On. Thus Joseph emerged in charge of the land of Egypt.—

And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphenath-paneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Poti-phera priest of On. And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.—

וּקְרָא פַרְעֹה שׁוּם יוֹסֵף גַּבְרָא דְמִטַּמְרָן גָּלְיָן לֵיהּ וִיהַב לֵיהּ יָת אָסְנַת בַּת פּוֹטִי פֶרַע רַבָּא דְאוֹן לְאִתְּתָא וּנְפַק יוֹסֵף (שַׁלִּיט) עַל אַרְעָא דְמִצְרָיִם:
צפנת פענח. מְפָרֵשׁ הַצְּפוּנוֹת; וְאֵין לְפַעְנֵחַ דִּמְיוֹן בַּמִּקְרָא:
פוטיפרע. הוּא פּוֹטִיפַר, וְנִקְרָא פּוֹטִיפֶרַע עַל שֶׁנִּסְתָּרֵס מֵאֵלָיו, לְפִי שֶׁחָמַד אֶת יוֹסֵף לְמִשְׁכַּב זָכָר (סוטה י"ג):
מ"א:מ"ו
וְיוֹסֵף֙ בֶּן־שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה בְּעָמְד֕וֹ לִפְנֵ֖י פַּרְעֹ֣ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרָ֑יִם וַיֵּצֵ֤א יוֹסֵף֙ מִלִּפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה וַֽיַּעְבֹ֖ר בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
41:46
Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt.—Leaving Pharaoh’s presence, Joseph traveled through all the land of Egypt.
41:46
And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt.—And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

וְיוֹסֵף בַּר תְּלָתִין שְׁנִין כַּד קָם קֳדָם פַּרְעֹה מַלְכָּא דְמִצְרָיִם וּנְפַק יוֹסֵף מִן קֳדָם פַּרְעֹה וַעֲבַר (שַׁלִּיט) בְּכָל אַרְעָא דְמִצְרָיִם:

וַתַּ֣עַשׂ הָאָ֔רֶץ בְּשֶׁ֖בַע שְׁנֵ֣י הַשָּׂבָ֑ע לִקְמָצִֽים׃
41:47
During the seven years of plenty, the land produced in abundance.

And in the seven years of plenty the earth brought forth in heaps.

וּכְנָשׁוּ דָיְרֵי אַרְעָא בִּשְׁבַע שְׁנֵי שׂוֹבְעָא (נ"א שִׂבְעָא) עִיבוּרָא לְאוֹצָרִין:
ותעש הארץ. כְּתַרְגּוּמוֹ, וְאֵין הַלָּשׁוֹן נֶעֱקָר מִלְּשׁוֹן עֲשִׂיָּה:
לקמצים. קֹמֶץ עַל קֹמֶץ, יָד עַל יָד, הָיוּ אוֹצְרִים:
מ"א:מ"ח
וַיִּקְבֹּ֞ץ אֶת־כָּל־אֹ֣כֶל ׀ שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר הָיוּ֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיִּתֶּן־אֹ֖כֶל בֶּעָרִ֑ים אֹ֧כֶל שְׂדֵה־הָעִ֛יר אֲשֶׁ֥ר סְבִיבֹתֶ֖יהָ נָתַ֥ן בְּתוֹכָֽהּ׃

And he gathered all the grain of eLit. “the seven years that were in the land of Egypt.”the seven years that the land of Egypt was enjoying,-e and stored the grain in the cities; he put in each city the grain of the fields around it.

And he gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities; the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same.

וּכְנַשׁ יָת כָּל עִיבוּר שְׁבַע שְׁנִין דִּי הֲווֹ בְּאַרְעָא דְמִצְרַיִם וִיהַב עִיבוּר בְּקִרְוַיָּא עִיבוּר חֲקַל קַרְתָּא דִּי בְסַחְרָנָהָא יְהַב בְּגַוָּהּ:
אכל שדה העיר אשר סביבתיה נתן בתוכה. שֶׁכָּל אֶרֶץ וְאֶרֶץ מַעֲמֶדֶת פֵּרוֹתֶיהָ, וְנוֹתְנִין בַּתְּבוּאָה מֵעֲפַר הַמָּקוֹם, וּמַעֲמִיד אֶת הַתְּבוּאָה מִלִּרְקֹב:

וַיִּצְבֹּ֨ר יוֹסֵ֥ף בָּ֛ר כְּח֥וֹל הַיָּ֖ם הַרְבֵּ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד עַ֛ד כִּי־חָדַ֥ל לִסְפֹּ֖ר כִּי־אֵ֥ין מִסְפָּֽר׃
41:49
So Joseph collected produce in very large quantity, like the sands of the sea, until he ceased to measure it, for it could not be measured.

And Joseph laid up corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until they left off numbering; for it was without number.

וּכְנַשׁ יוֹסֵף עִבוּרָא כְּחַלָּא דְיַמָּא סַגִּי לַחֲדָא עַד דִּי פְסַק לְמִמְנֵי אֲרֵי לֵית מִנְיָן:
עד כי חדל לספר. עַד כִּי חָדַל לוֹ הַסּוֹפֵר לִסְפֹּר, וַהֲרֵי זֶה מִקְרָא קָצָר:
כי אין מספר. לְפִי שֶׁאֵין מִסְפָּר, וַהֲרֵי כִי מְשַׁמֵּשׁ בְּלְשׁוֹן דְּהָא:

וּלְיוֹסֵ֤ף יֻלַּד֙ שְׁנֵ֣י בָנִ֔ים בְּטֶ֥רֶם תָּב֖וֹא שְׁנַ֣ת הָרָעָ֑ב אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָֽלְדָה־לּוֹ֙ אָֽסְנַ֔ת בַּת־פּ֥וֹטִי פֶ֖רַע כֹּהֵ֥ן אֽוֹן׃
41:50
Before the years of famine came, Joseph became the father of two sons, whom Asenath daughter of Poti-phera, priest of On, bore to him.

And unto Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine came, whom Asenath the daughter of Poti-phera priest of On bore unto him.

וּלְיוֹסֵף אִתְיְלִיד תַּרְתֵּין בְּנִין עַד לָא עַלַּת שַׁתָּא דְכַפְנָא דִּיְלִידַת לֵיהּ אָסְנַת בַּת פּוֹטִי פֶרַע רַבָּא דְאוֹן:
בטרם תבא שנת הרעב. מִכָּאן שֶׁאָדָם אָסוּר לְשַׁמֵּשׁ מִטָּתוֹ בִּשְׁנֵי רְעָבוֹן (תענית י"א):
מ"א:נ"א
וַיִּקְרָ֥א יוֹסֵ֛ף אֶת־שֵׁ֥ם הַבְּכ֖וֹר מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה כִּֽי־נַשַּׁ֤נִי אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־כָּל־עֲמָלִ֔י וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־בֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי׃
41:51
Joseph named the first-born Manasseh, meaning, “God has made me forgetfHeb. nashshani, connected with “Manasseh” (Menashsheh). completely my hardship and my parental home.”
41:51
And Joseph called the name of the first-born Manasseh: ‘for God hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.’

וּקְרָא יוֹסֵף יָת שׁוּם בּוּכְרָא מְנַשֶּׁה אֲרֵי אַנְשְׁיַנִי יְיָ יָת כָּל עַמְלִי וְיָת כָּל בֵּית אַבָּא:
מ"א:נ"ב
וְאֵ֛ת שֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖י קָרָ֣א אֶפְרָ֑יִם כִּֽי־הִפְרַ֥נִי אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּאֶ֥רֶץ עָנְיִֽי׃
41:52
And the second he named Ephraim, meaning, “God has made me fertilegHeb. hiphrani, connected with “Ephraim.” in the land of my affliction.”

And the name of the second called he Ephraim: ‘for God hath made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.’

וְיָת שׁוּם תִּנְיָנָא קְרָא אֶפְרָיִם אֲרֵי אַפְּשַׁנִי יְיָ בְּאַרַע שִׁעְבּוּדִי:
